AN APOLOGY TO BREED BAN ENTHUSIASTS

I'm sorry you are frightened of my dogs and are trying to have them killed

because they are pit bulls.

I'm sorry you lack the understanding of this breed's true history,

gentleness with people, wonderful temperament, intelligence and behavioral

conformation. I'm sorry you won't read the ATTS stats regarding our breed's

true temperament, putting it in the top four for temperament, scoring better

than breeds like Golden Retrievers, and cocker spaniels.

I'm sorry that you side with and protect animal abusers by marking the breed

of dog, and not the irresponsibility of the owner. I'm sorry that by your

logic I could steal a car, run some people over with it and then you can

blame the make of car for the accident, as I walk free.

I'm sorry you generalize one breed of dog with one group of people. I'm

sorry you can't see the love and determination that many often highly

educated, non-criminal and "normal" types of people show towards this breed

and the great personal sacrifices that they make to take care of their dog

responsibly.

I'm sorry you cannot go into the shelters and see the hundreds of abandoned

and abused pit bulls, dying only for the insane "crime" of being born the

breed they are. I'm sorry you cannot see the look of disappointment in their

eyes as someone walks by their kennel, and refuses to consider adopting them

based on an ill educated fear mongering reporter. I'm sorry that you cannot

be there when the animal looks at a human for the last time, and in spite of

betrayed by all humans they have met, their tail still wags as someone

approaches with the syringe of Euthinol.

I'm sorry you cannot be there when law enforcement shoots one of your dogs dead

inside it's own home in front of the children it mutually loves for simply

getting off the dog bed and walking over to say hello with it's tail

wagging. I'm sorry you cannot be there to rescue pit bull puppies from a

plastic bag in a dumpster, dumped there by someone switching their illegal,

and inhumane activities to another, more lucrative breed.

I'm sorry you cannot understand the difference between canine and human

aggression, in the way that this breed can. Yes, I'm saying my pit bull is

smarter then you.

I'm sorry that the medieval witch-hunting genetics of intolerance,

generalization, and racism make you feel the need to vilify a breed of dog.

I'm sorry that justice, equality, tolerance, common sense are all things you

hold dear as a fellow Canadian, and expect from others, but do not yourself

offer them towards a pit bull or its caregiver. I'm sorry that you don't take

the constructive time to petition changes in the Canadian animal cruelty

act, and in the criminal code that would deal out serious punishment to the

real animal abusers.

I'm sorry you cannot see the disappointed look on a puppy's face when the

people petting it quickly frown, and walk away when you tell them it is a

pit bull. I'm sorry you feel the need to terrorize my family and my dogs for

crimes we never have and never will commit. I'm sorry you don't have to live

in fear of your dog's safety from hysterical, and mentally unstable people

trying to inflict all manner of evil upon your dogs.

I'm sorry that you cannot see my breed working in some of the best Search

and Rescue groups in the world, saving countless lives each year. I'm sorry

our media censors and refuses to print the breed name "pit bull' when in

connection with a positive act such as saving a person or child from a

burning house, drowning, wild attacking animals, etc. I'm sorry you cannot

see the many pit bulls registered as therapy dogs and bringing so much joy to

another misunderstood, neglected demographic in our society, the senior

citizen.

I am sorry you can't see a pit bull kiss a child, step carefully over a

kitten, or play in a sunbeam. I'm sorry you cannot wake in the morning to

feel a warm pit bull cuddled next to you in bed, and know that you are their

total world, and even if the house caught fire and trapped you, they would

stay with you to the end.

But, now that I really think about it, I'm not at all sorry you don't own a

pit bull--you do not deserve one.

EGAR, January 2007

That is some very beautiful writing - the way that the world is going though, sadly, I think you will almost have to substitute "Dog" for "Pit Bull" the entire way through

almost makes me want to cry.........

That is so beautiful and sadly it's true. People think my baby girl is a Pit Bull and tell me to get rid of her before she attacks my son. Shes a papered Amstaff but they are very similar to Pit Bulls. But when I say she's an Amstaff, most of them heave a sigh of relief. The dog can't help being born wearing a Pit Bull suit. I hope that everyone does their own research into the breed and comes to their own conclusions instead of believing the crap they print in newspapers or air on tv.

all the amstaff owners go on about how good they are with people/kids,but my biggest fear is coming across one loose somewhere and seeing it run towards my dogs, latch on and thats lights out for any canine victim.i have seen the damage these dogs can do and its frightening.now i think they are good looking dogs, and yes a reponsible owner is to be commended but the power in these dogs is just too much for other dogs to handle if a confrontation occurs.they are the reason im scared to walk my dogs.yes any breed can and will attack other dogs but the strength and hold of these dogs will kill.im sorry im going to upset breed enthusiasts but this is a big concern for many people.

Robbi - is that the Bruce that was in the news for what seemed like years? Seized for being a PitBull and then kept in terrible conditions while his family fought for his release??"

Yes it is, Bruce became the poster boy of bsl in Northern Ireland, he brought thousands of people together to try and fight the barbaric legislation. Fortunately Bruce survived his cruel imprisonment and is now in the care of East Galway Animal Rescue (EGAR)

Your post proves the point of the poem perfectly, it is people like you who's bigotry and ignorance are causing the death of thousands of innocent dogs. This is a tribute to Pitbulls and Bullbreeds not another thread trying to feed the hatred against them :(:(

the poem is about abuse of these dogs which i do not support as the dogs were made like they are by humans,as i said, responsible owners deserve a pat on the back and yes dead head owners make a dangerous dog lethal.

I used to walk my elderly neighbours roman nose bull terrier, along the way i found a boxer, staffordshire bull terrier and a yucky little fluff thing but from that young age of 12 i fell in love with bull breeds and really wish people could see how loving and gentle they are! I'd never be without one now :(

OMG, you really believe all the hype. They're just a dog the same as any other. Tell me how many other breeds of their medium size are you scared of? because in reality it should be all of them as they're no different.

The fact is that you're more likely to be attacked by another breed, so think of the SWF or any other breed before being scared of amstaffs.

You're scare mongereing and it doesn't do anyone any good.

no other breeds worry me,can you honestly tell me they have the same strength as any other dog? and whats a swf ?

SWF=short white fluffy. cattle dogs, mastiffs, danes, bulldogs, pointers, wolfhounds, ridgies, the list is endless.

Yes they are a strong dog, they're well built and they need the same amount of respect, training and socialising as any dog. I think the question is about upping the standard of general dog ownership and not singularing out amstaffs and the like as only suitable for serious dog owners, which is true but it should also be true for all animals.

You only have to look at owners of small breeds who've never trained or attempted to treat their dog like anything other than a child which results in ill mannered dogs.

klw, it is obvious by your posts that you dislike Amstaffs/Bullbreeds. Time and again it has been said that it is not the breed it is the deed, there are many factors that contribute to dog attacks, the type or breed of the dog doesnt come in to it. Factors include-socialisation, envoironment, deprivation of assets, chaining of dogs, abuse and cruelty, socio economic bracket of owner, lack of training.

It is ignorance and blind belief in media hype that has caused the murder of thousands of family pets throughout the world, shame on any dog lover who believes the slanderous lies without doing some of their own research on Bullbreeds :scared::eek:

I agree, this whole " thing" with this " locking" jaw, it's a crock! A pitty has no way of doing so, it's not made any diff to other breeds in the jaw, they r a dog, just like other K9's. My first reg dog was a amarican papered pitty and I keep cattle dogs and kelpies now and I know witch breed is more Likly to bite and it's NOT the pitty. My 2 yo would sit on my pitty like a horse, I wouldn't dream of letting a kid do that to some breeds, ( only due to some breeds don't have the tollerance) So many little breeds get away with bad manners!!!

I witnessed two dogs the other who were attacking another dog while being walked on a lead. The owner picked up the dog turned her back and started walking the other way the two dogs were jumping up on her still attacking her dog a man heard her screaming and came to her aid he kicked the two dogs but they wouldn't stop

My hubby ran out as we reconized the two dogs as soon as they saw hubby they went up to him all happy etc we put a lead on them both ---the man was angry asking if they were our dogs ----My hubby explained they lived 4 houses up.

We wrote a note saying their dogs attacked put them back in the yard locked their gate.

The two dogs were knee high tall jack russell look a likes ------------------------------after the wifes placid mastiff died her husband chose the two dogs as he had them as a child -----------------I bet the wife won the argument about the bigger bullmastiff being the better safer choice of family dog.

And you know what --------we had put our adress and phone number on the note and we never heard from them asking what had happened ? thankyou etc I will be telling the other lady where these dogs live because that could have been my child walking our little foxy , I wonder would these dogs have done the same if I was walking my dane/arab or my mastiff?

ALL dogs have teeth and ALL dogs can attack be it any breed KLW you should be vary of any dog off a lead but not add to the hysterical hype There are simple steps you can take should you feel uneasy about a dog you see one of them is not to run around throwing your arms in the air saying ''pitbull''

The only dog I stay away from is the little white maltese that runs under the fence and attacks the feet of me and my dogs it bit the back of my mastiff's legs one day (which my boy just looko up at me and kept going) but I bet my boy would have been the bad guy had he turned around and bit back.

Over the years I have seen so much like the time two boys teased two dobes untill the dobes chased them up a tree I sat on my front porch till it was over The street then got a letter from the parents saying these dogs were unprevoked and should be put down etc I took the letter to owner explaining he was in the wrong for his dogs being out however I would give a full statement about what these boys did to the dogs.

I am sick and tied of the bullshit why is always the dogs fault?

I practise safe dog ownership I have 3 dogs and although I trust them when kids come to play in my backyard I put my dogs in the front yard NOT because I don't trust my dogs but because I don't trust the KIDS.

Many years ago I had a english mastiff my sons friend aged around 10 at the time provoked my dog pegged pegs on his ears pulled his tail etc my dog growled at him THATS ALL my dog was baited less than a week later the granmother said to me that day"" I heard your dog died"" no-one knew it was a couple of hours later so how did she??

Kelprin, Thank you for the info. I did not know that about pittys. Are there any dog with lockjaws?

I entirely sympathise with any owner that has been bullied simply for the breed they have when the do the right thing by the dog. I don't enjoy walking my GSD due to the number of small hairy dog (not always white) owners that will cross the road, turn around or tell me to keep my vicious dog away from their dog. My dog walks quietly at my side while their's is straining at the end of lead growling and barking. If it got loose and attacked my dog we all know who would get the blame!!

Muttrus, so sorry to hear about your mastiff. I agree with you about the kids. I trust my dog but not other kids. On the positive side, most are cautious around him due to the negative hype.

Breeders can improve the dog but how do we improve people?

Locking jaws is an urban myth perpetuated, I guess, to 'dehumanise' bull breeds, in particular the latest whipping boy for all things wrong in the dog world, the APBT. As is the myth that such dogs don't feel pain that is until hormones such as adrenlaine wears off, ridiculous argument unless bull breeds are completely devoid of receptors and nerve endings!!!
