KELPIE Rave is alive and has a place in history thanks to pioneering Australian vets, the Herald Sun reported.

A team at the University of Melbourne's veterinary hospital has adapted an MRI machine, after buying it second-hand from a hospital, and used it to pinpoint a life-threatening tumor deep in the 11-year-old kelpie's brain, in an Australian first.

Owner Adam Finlay feared the worst for his pampered pooch when she started suffering seizures several months ago.

"It was distressing to see her like that," Mr Finlay said.

But a scan on the multi-million-dollar device revealed a brain tumor and veterinarians were able to act quickly.

Referral was made to a specialist vet centre and Dr Sam Long, who became a specialist in animal brain surgery after working alongside a neurologist in Britain.

He cut through Rave's skin, skull and thick muscle and surgically excised the deadly lump.

The canine spent eight days in intensive care after the operation but is now back home with her owner on a slow path to recovery.
