Brisbane Vet Recommendation

I'm concerned about a couple problems my old Rotty girl has and i want to find another vet for a 2nd opinion / check up. I'm not happy with with

her current vets solution to her problems and they've just become worse over the last two days.

I don't care what they charge, i just want to take her to someone who will give her a full, genuine check up / test and show a bit more concern, not just relate her problems

to old age.

Northside of Brisbane would be ideal, but would be willing to travel.

We use Third Avenue Veterinary Surgery in Sandgate for our labrador. Ph 3869 3347

Small surgery owned and run by Simon Armidt. He is very caring, listens and spends as much time as you need at a consultation.

If money is no object - Queenland Vet Specialists at West Chermside.

It's a specialist centre, and somethings are expensive (and some surprisingly are not!) but I trust what most of the vets have to say. The guy who owns/runs it is a marvel - Dr Richard Eaton-Wells. He's an orthopaedic specialist but was a general vet for a most of his career.

If we think it's possibly serious, we go there.

I have a 13 year old who has a number of issues at present and have been taking her to our local clinic, Southern Cross Vets, at Woodford. She is under the care of Sophie (don't know her last name  ) who is very thorough and understanding. Sophie is due to commence working at Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre (Thu-Sun) as of next week.

Please PM if you would like any further info

Can also concur with huski, Rowan Kilmartin is good, he is at Ormeau. 1 1/2hr commute for us but worth the trip (this is not for a geriatric reason)

Thanks for the answers. I'm not sure who to pick.

My Rotty girl has been in the same spot since last night. I've only just got her up to feed her. She's a bit unstable on her feet and isn't walking in a straight line. She also is having trouble with her grip

on the tile's.

ETA I had to help her get up. She couldn't or wouldn't do it on her own.

AMS i don't think it's an emergency at this stage, but there is a problem that i need a 2nd opinion on.

She has problems with her front leg joint, but over the past two days it goes become worse. ( That's what i assume the problem is )

She had a check up a couple weeks ago, but i'm not happy with the solutions the vet has given me to help her day to day life.

She also has a large growth on the same leg, which i'm told does not need to be removed. I asked about a blood test to check out other things and was told

she doesn't need it.

But she now can't or doesn't want to get up and walk around. She's unstable on the tile's, but is eating/drinking as per normal.

Man at the back owns a very elderly Border Collie that he rescued many years back. Molly was looking really poor, couple years ago...back leg problem and signs of deterioration. Everyone believed that was her last times.

He took her to a very experienced vet who'd been good with our tibbies.

Molly perked up, with the treatments given, to go on living a more comfortable life. And looking far better. She's still doing so.

Jennifer White, The Glen Veterinary Surgery, The Gap.

By coincidence, we first went to Jennifer to get a 2nd opinion... after one of our dogs had been prescribed a medication which had awful results.

We stayed with her. Wished we'd gone there, in the first place.

I had two vets tell me Mish had arthritis and there was basically nothing I could do for him until I took him to see Dr Rowan who told me almost straight away that he didn't have arthritis, but an injury that he was able to fix very easily. The change in him was almost instant. I trust him explicitly now!

I use Anvet a Kedron and couldn't be happier - lovely vets and very thorough and caring. I've also found the vets at the Brisbane Vetinerary Specialist Centre (BVSC) on Old Northern Rd at Albany Creek to be very knowledgable and caring. In an emergency I've taken my dogs there and I've found them to be very thorough. I've also used QVS at West Chermside in an emergency and and as a general vet and I actually found the people at Albany Creek a lot nicer. Even though the standard of treatment might still be the same I like to feel comfortable in the surroundings.

RL1, Skye has been on pentosan injections for some time now for joint problems. Since mid Dec she has been on metacam for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory. She has sasha's blend added to her food daily, together with salmon oil capusles.

10 days ago she had an xray which showed severe arthritis to her left hip. She was not coping well on Tuesday and her xrays have been sent through, by Sophie, to a specialist to confirm "nothing else is going on". Skye also has another issue with a "fatty lipoma" which we are working through.

I can't stress enough how brilliant Sophie at our local clinic has been with Skye. :(

The vet hasn't given her any injections ever for it from memory. Only tablets to use on her "bad" days. I've tried Sashas blend, SeaFlex sticks, Osteosupport capsules and other type's

of Fish oil and glucosamine ?? tablets. Nothing really seems to have any benefit.

She also has fatty lipomas. She's had some removed in the past and at the moment has a large one on the elbow joint, which i think could be making the problem worse, but the

vet doesn't see any need to remove it. Her feet also now appear to be splayed out.

In the past i've had X-rays done and the results showed her hips are excellent. The vet has also said her back is good.

Problem is i don't think the vet is looking for any ways to help the problem, more just saying that's life :( To me that's not good enough.

I had similar issue's with my previous Rotty who passed away in 2007 ( who was this girls mother ) and the vet i took her to had her on a daily pain relief capsules.

I hate seeing her in the same position all day and night, not wanting to get up.

It's been hard for us as well to find out which joint supplement works the best for Skye. Pentosan injections are initially given x weekly for a month, x monthly for 3 months and then every 3 months.

Sophie has not at any stage said that's life, we have discussed what is best for Skye, and am happy with Skye's treatment, knowing full well that she is in the best of hands. :( We have tramal here should Skye need it. :(

We had a rotten day with Skye on Tuesday, she displayed signs of not wanting to get up and the other vet in the practice mentioned Clinical depression, which basically meant she was tired of being in pain. Has your vet discussed this with you?.

Unfortunately, Skye's FL is cancerous, have had a good chat to Sophie about it and at this stage we are not going to operate as there is no guarantee it won't grow back and op a bit of a major. Given that she is 13 not sure that it is the right path to follow.

She is happy enough at the moment which is what counts.
