Frontline And Fipronil

Recommended Posts

I dunno, sounds a bit like scare mongering to me. Frontline has been around forever and the only issue I've seen with it is that it just doesn't work.

I'm not a fan of websites that advise against using flea products. I've watched at least 5 cats die from flea infestation and nearly all owners claimed to be using some sort of 'natural prevention'.

I don't think preventatives/treatments necessarily need to be used all year round if you don't have a problem, but they definitely have their place.

Stormie, if you saw how my dog deteriorated at the specialist centre in five days, you would never, ever use the product.

I agree with Stormie.

So sorry you lost your dog to an allergic reaction, not nice. These things do happen just look at the people that are sensitive to some things so we just can't rule it out in the lives of our animals.

I was reading somewhere the other day of the complains that Frontline was not working and this article said Frontline is working, but the flea infestations in some areas is so bad that as it kills one lot of fleas another lot is just jumping on and most owners think it is the same fleas. Yes i know, how can we tell what flea is what, but it does sound to be a feasible explanation to me. This may be the answer to why we are hearing so many conflicting stories as to why it is working on some dogs and not others.

For my dogs I use Regents 200 for fleas it is a Fipronal based product that is used to spray crops and Bananas.

As it is 200 and the Friponel that is used in Frontline is 100 I break down the one I use down 50/50 with pest oil. I use the oil because I find it sticks to the dog better than other products such as water, metho. Once, I used Olive Oil because I had forgotten to buy the pest oil, which you can purchase off the supermarket shelf. Don't be fooled by the name Pest Oil, it is just a light oil that you may mix with water and spray the plants in the garden to get of the bugs, hence the name Pest Oil.

I'm sorry for the loss of your dog, that must have been a horrible experience :(

However, bear in mind, any drug has the potential to cause adverse or allergic reactions. I've seen and heard of dogs having adverse and allergic reactions to all spot on flea treatments as well as to commonly used drugs.

The worst thing about frontline imo, is that it is ineffective.

Ideally I would only treat my dog if I saw fleas on her, but unfortunately I currently live in a paralysis tick infested area, so its not really an option not to treat her with Frontline or advantix.

It makes logic sense that there could be resistance to Fipronil, parasiticides generally do tend to get resistance after a length of time. Also it was the number one product for so many years, which also supports the resistance theory.

If I need a flea treatment for my dogs, I look past Frontline for the above reason.

It must be coming off patent...

I was told the other day by a vet nurse, that Frontline has gone back to an original recipe and is bringing out a different product, possibly as a reaction to customers claims that their product just does not work.

I was never happy with it, new or old recipe.

I like Advantage.
