Which study organisations would everyone recommend? Chequeredblackdog Posted February 12, 2012 Share Posted February 12, 2012 It does kind of depend what you want to do, but a Cert 2 animal studies is a fairly basic/standard point to start from.I did it last year through TAFE. From there you can get basic level jobs like kennel work, petshop stuff etc. It can also lead to captive animal work and vet nursing. TAFE also has a flexible delivery system, i.e distance, part time etc. I've done a couple of courses through them and am pretty happy with the deliver/content/workload and support. I couldn't find any courses at TAFE in melb relating to Just Grooming. Perhaps approach a TAFE on Orientation week and ask what they offer & how to get in. Good luck in your search. There are different courses for vet nursing, but generally I would suggest Cert 3 in Companion Animal Studies at TAFE would be a good way to start, or even the Cert 2 in Animal Studies. If you are deadly serious about getting into the pet industry at any level above minimum wage, my advice is to broaden your horizons and think about relocation for study. You won't get any kind of a decent qualification without getting hands on with animals. Frankly unless you do that under the supervision of an experienced trainer, I'd not employ you. Some of the skills associated with grooming, handling and training dogs require 'hands on' experience. That said, some courses have both residential and correspondence components. A qualified 'behaviorist' is either a vet with specialist study, an animal psycyhologist with specialist study or a very experienced dog trainer with specialist study. you won't get any such qualification by correspondence. Perhaps ask at your nearest UNI when they have Open day if they have any short courses? I know Fairfield has a house for students if they come from far far away, you may have to stay on campus if its a long way from your home? Centerlink may be able to help with AUSTUDY?
