Concerns After Spaying Surgery

Recommended Posts

hi everyone, im posting for the first time, and because I have a couple of concerns im hoping someone might be able to help me out with. I have a 5 month old gorgeous dark chocolate female Labrador. Chikko is her name :) she went and got spayed on Monday 2nd April, 6 days ago and seemed to be going really well, with only a slight seroma, examined by the vet on the Wednesday, in great spirits and lots and lots of energy. only in the last 2 days I have started to become more concerned. her seroma seems to have gotten quite a bit bigger, and has turned quite hard, whereas before it was quite soft and squishy. her actual incision sight seems quite normal to me, I think, no problems there. but she has also got a lot less energy, sleeping a lot more and snoring horrendously, which she never did. she just seems a little out of character and lethargic. also she has a crusty scabby sore on one side of her abdomen in the section where they shaved her fur, I think maybe a reaction to the scrub they cleaned her with before surgery, not sure.its about the size of a 20c piece. the scab is starting to fall off and it looks a bit sore and infected. is there anything anyone knows of that I can use to clean it for her or should I just leave it? the problem is its a public holiday, my regular vet is shut. I could take her to the emergency vet in woolloongabba, but don't know if I should just wait for my regular vet to reopen on Tuesday. should I be concerned or is this normal? this is the first time I have had a dog spayed so don't really know what is normal. thanks and sorry for the long post.

Doesn't soundnormal to me. Dogs I've had speyed, or any other surgery, have bounced back and been hard to keep quiet until they have their stitches out. I'd be taking her to the vet asap. I know emergency vets are expensive but you don't want to run the risk of something getting worse and losing her - or incurring greater expenses.

Are you able to post up a pic for us? Can you check her temperature?

I tried to post pics but for whatever reason it won't work. It's not oozing. Just a lump around her incision sight about the size of a ping pong ball. The actual incision looks clean and normal.

I'd worry about her being lethargic, especially if that's out of character for her.

Doesn't sound normal to me either, especially the part with her being lethargic. She may have an infection or something. Is she eating ok?

I'd definately be getting her checked out before Tuesday - better to be safe than sorry. :o

She ia eating fine and drinking fine, still going to the toilet fine. But she is a lab. I don't think they ever go off their food. I don't think it's painful to touch. The main thing that concerns me is the lethargy.

Have you rung the vet yet? Hope she's ok.

yeah the vet said not to worry unless she goes off food and especially water, or if she has a temp. she seems to be in a lot better spirits today too. maybe she is just getting over that cone being on her head. I know I sure would hate it! thanx for ur well wishes :)

My other dog did exactly same thing was initially all bouncy and normal on return from surgery 24hours later crashed and slept, then by day 4 was totally back to normal. No cone on head and spent lots of time licking which drove me insane but obviously kept the site clean.

As for the small raw area it is probably from where the retractor was and has pinched the skin, best to just bathe it with a warm solution of salty water or teaspoon of bicarbonate soda (baking powder)mixed in a cup of warm water three times a day and you should find within 48hours it will be a nice healthy pink and start to heal nicely, scabs tend to hold in all the serous fluid that would usually leak away so it is better off with the scab off.

The incision wound will heal on the outside by around 10days but the inner layers often take longer and so you need to make sure she doesn't jump or do stairs or any other rough play for around a month, as often bigger breed dogs can get hernias through the incision line.

If in doubt go back to your regular vet tomorrow and it should all be covered in the original surgery fee.
