larajetaudrey Posted June 18, 2015 Share Posted June 18, 2015 Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on here and I didn't know where else to post or ask. I hope this is okay to post here. My brothers dog is aggressive and fearful of other people. We are working on it but he needs his nails trimmed desperately. We can't do it ourselves, every time we touch his feet he goes into a craze. He's 45kg, so it's quite hard to just pin him down and do it. We've tried so many different things but we have come to the conclusion he needs to be sedated to get them done. Maybe we don't, maybe some of you have an idea of what to do? Or how we can deal with taking him to the vet? We are from Melbourne so maybe someone could recommend a vet that would be good at dealing with this? We took him to The Lost Dogs Home to be desexed as a puppy and that wasn't a good experience for him, so I really don't know how he's going to go with any vet. Steph M Posted June 18, 2015 Share Posted June 18, 2015 Any vet should be able to help, but call ahead and let themknow eexactly what to expect and bring him in muzzled, you can ask the vet how they'd like to approach it. Jumabaar Posted June 18, 2015 Share Posted June 18, 2015 My boy was sedated out in the car park so everyone was relaxed and he wasn't stressed. We reversed him in a quiet room with just me and we walked out quietly. persephone Posted June 18, 2015 Share Posted June 18, 2015 Speak with the vet, and perhaps they can prescribe something which you can give the dog at home , on the day of the appointment ? Then he can be properly anaesthetised at the clinic. When he's under, it would be a good time to have teeth/ears checked as well ! Best of luck . I would also advise finding a smallish clinic , with experienced vet ., as close to you as possible .....and yes, get a good and comfortable muzzle - train the dog to accept it well before it is needed. I had a very large aggressive dog - he needed sedation (done via car window while I held his head) and muzzling for a trip to the vet. Just be aware though - my dog had 3 times the normal dose (for his size) and it didn't even touch him - the vet was most surprised as my dog should have been comatose! If the vet is a scary experience - the dog may become hyper alerted and sedation doesn't work. What about a mobile vet? One that comes to your house? (That could possibly be worse!)
