National Dog Trainers Federation

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

The NDTF are starting their next course as listed below. I can't highly recommend enough this course to anyone seriously wanting to learn to become a dog trainer and beyond.

The Certificate III in Dog Behaviour and Training is a nationally accredited course. The course goes far beyond teaching a dog to sit and lay down - it is a comprehensive program covering Canine Psychology & Behaviour, Basic Veterinary care, the History & Development of dogs, and the understanding of undesirable/abnormal behaviours that dogs exhibit. The course also covers extensive practical training in all facets of obedience, socialisation and agility for adult dogs and puppies. The course is run on a part time basis over a 7 month period. The entire program is conducted outside of normal business hours and should therefore not interfere with your regular employment or education. The next course begins on Saturday 28th January 2006, with another one following in May 2006.

I did this course 12 months ago, mainly because my dog had dog aggression issues and I couldn't find anyone to help me. I looooooved the course and got more from it than I ever imagined I would. My dog also benefited.

When I got my next puppy I was more than equipped to deal with bringing up a healthy, happy, well socialised puppy. The bonus is, I now spend my time doing what I love, training dogs.... :pant: It doesn't get any better...

BTW: We had a couple of people on our course who came from interstate once a month and successfully completed the course - so anything is possible..

Like you, Pippi, I thoroughly enjoyed the course also and was sad when it finished. So much so, in fact, that I did the other couple of courses they have on offer (such as behaviourist and substance detection courses).

Haven't looked back since all these courses, and I'm doing lots of stuff involving dogs - big change to my otherwise clerical career!

P.S. Is there any indication that NDF will ever open training centers interstate??

Goldie I know that they are starting a distance learning packing as part of the accreditation package.

I don't know about the training centres in other states just yet as one of their concerns is maintaining integrity of the course with experienced instructors.

Awesome news about the distant learning... I'm currently saving to do one of their courses, but the flights interstate have made it almost out of my reach.

I only want to learn through NDTF... I don't think there are many Perthites who have done the course due to the distance, and Perth could really use some more good trainers (judging by the number of previous posts on the subject!)

edited to clarify.

One of the NDTF students who has recently completed (very successfully) the course came from Perth to do it. She tossed up about doing the Delta Course, but chose NDTF because of its wider scope in teaching training methods.

She now lives down here. (Must love our weather .......... not. :p)

I agree - from the number of the posts I've read in various threads it sounds as though "Perthies" would benefit by having a few more trainers with a good background knowledge to training and dog psychology.

Yeah, I've tossed around the idea of the delta course too, but from what I've read (and heard) of the course content... the NDTF ones is better in so many many ways.

I will get there, just might be a while!

As I mentioned in an earlier post CM the NDTF are very cautious about replicating their training like some other organisations as it tends to filter down the quality that the students recieve.

Another big plus about the NDTF is that they recognise all forms of dog obedience not just one style.

Basically they give you the tools and leave it up to you what you build from there

Bravo NDTF :p

Is there anyone her who has done both the Delta course and the NDTF one? Since I haven't done the NDTF one I'm hardly qualifed to critique it. I have started the Delta course and thoroughly enjoyed it; unfortunately due to work committments and a desire to spend more time with my own young dog I had to defer.

Cheers,

Corine
