Puppy Pre-school

Hi Sheree-Lee

I would strongly recommend doing puppy preschool. For me (we have just bought a new puppy, our third dog) puppy school is all about socialisation. I could teach my new pup to sit, stay etc without the help of puppy school but I want to take her to classes so she can be around other dogs. Puppy school is also handy as most teach you things about paralysis tick etc, general obedience, the importance of socialisation etc. Even if you feel you know about these things I would still take your pup to puppy school - I bet she would really enjoy being with other dogs her own age.

What area are you living? Your vet clinic may be able to recommend a puppy school or may run one themselves. There are many training schools around that also do puppy preschool. Even my local Pet Hypermarket does it!

I took my Cody to puppy preschool at the vets. He absolutely loved the vet from then on. Even when he's gone to have unpleasant things done he can't control his excitement.

One of the most important things for a puppy is socialisation. If puppy preschool achieves nothing more than this it's well worth it.

Puppy preschool at your vets is definetly worth doing. They teach basic commands (sit, down, stay and come) which I had already taught my boy, but it is another story trying to get a puppy to listen to you with the distraction of many other puppies to play with!

The socialisation aspect is fantastic - and it is a lot of fun to watch all these different puppies playing with each other

Try to do it at the vet surgery you are planning to go to - your puppy will love going to the vets after that. My puppy has just come home after spending 10 days at the vets (he was very sick and had major surgery, drip etc...) He still LOVES going to the vets!

What area are you in, then someone local could recommed a vets to you....

I took my little staffy to pre-school yesterday. She's 10 weeks old. I had her in my arms and she was shaking in her boots. She did lots of sniffing, lots of playing and barking. Also got squirted with lots of water for barking back at the other yappy pups. She learnt to sit and go rooouuunnnddd. It was her first day! Puppy parties is a great way to socialise them safely as they would be at about the same level vaccination! I am all for it.

I have just come home from teaching pp @ my vets. Lots of fun & all the pups are soooo cute. The owners are usually all motivared & great to work with.

Do your homework though - pp should be reward based training only (no chocker chains) and no free for all puppy play!!

Puppy classes should be FUN for both owner & pup.

I always enjoy them as well even after a long day...... :(
