Puppy Preschools...in Perth, Wa

Recommended Posts

Hello all! This is my first time writing on this website...

I am about to get my new staffy puppy in two weeks time (when he turns 8weeks old)! I am all excited and cant wait for him to be living with me!! He currently is living across the road with his mum and the rest of the his litter...(my neighbour is a registered breeder and a great one at that! hehe) so i get to visit him now...but cant wait til he is living with me!

I am currently looking into "Puppy Pre-school" as i want to get him trained early on...from day one!...and also as it is my very first dog (of my own) i want to learn as much as i can...as i want to be a good and responsible dog owner with a well behaved and not out of control puppy/dog!

If anyone knows of a good place that runs a Puppy Pre-school in and around Perth (I live in Forrestfield but am happy to travel to somewhere worth it!) please let me know!

And any advice on getting the puppy settled in the first few days/weeks would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey Jen!

It's so good that you're learning as much as you can  and boy is there a lot to learn. We just brought our little Puli pup home last week, he starts puppy preschool tonight at Attadale Vet. I will let you know what they're like

I know Vetwest also does puppy preschool, we decided not to go with them because they don't have classes running until the 13th and we wanted to start Hermes's socialization before then.

You should book a puppy preschool asap, we found it hard to get Hermes into one as all the classes were booked out.

Many vets do them, some trainers also do them too.

Thank you Elise!

Yes please do let me know how they are! And how you and your pup get on with it!

I have seen that a few vets do the puppy preschool thing but i dont think my local vet does it unfortunately  ... I have heard that Belmont vet does and have emailed them to find out details, though i would prefer to hear of somewhere great to take my pup! :D So would love to hear feedback from people first hand to ensure my little man goes to a great school where he and i can learn all that we can and he can become socialised from early on also! :)

By the way...I am attempting to attach a photo of my little guy taken a week and a half ago on one of my many pre-ownership visits!! :) Isnt he ADORABLE!! :) hehe

I am posting this just for information sakes.

http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?...=neutralisation

it is well worth a read along with the triangle of temptation pinned topic in the training forum. I have no affiliation with Steve at K9.

I too have a staffy pup 13 weeks old. I use the Triangle of Temptation and subscribe to most of the main points in the neutralisation topic, however I don't keep to it exactly.

Only today I had a guy come up to me with his little black fluffy dog, his first words to me were "I thought I would come and let my dog meet yours" He was taken back when I said "I rather you didn't , sorry" My dog comes to work with everyday and he is an awesome little fella and needs to understand I am the boss, no exceptions, especially at work.

The reason I didn't want his dog to meet mine , was due to a few reasons

1/ I didn't know him

2/ I have never seen the dog ever , let alone met the dog. What would have happened if the little pup had nipped my dog or vice versa this can lead to other social issues later on

3/ I allow my pup to meet and play with other dogs, but this is after I have seen the dog interact with me and other dogs and I watch very closly the first couple of times, and I control the start and finish times. (I make him sit and wait until I give him the free command, and then I stop it and he comes back to me)

4/ The dog was at work, so I am def the centre of the universe, the last thing I need is my dog to think every dog that comes by is more fun than me. This can be dangerous especially at work.

Cheers Roo

PS: Very cute pup. You should head over the stafford thread and make yourself known. You can find it in the general discussion area.

EDIT TO ADD: Oops I just reread my post, sorry if it came across as preaching, my main point was to look at some of the stuff published on this forum there is heaps of learnings. Some I listen to and some I take bits and pieces form and use in my day to day life with my dog.

Hmmm not too impressed with Attadale Vet. At this stage no I wouldn't recommend them. The vet nurse bought along a very dog aggressive pup which lunged and bit one of the pups, luckily the pup was okay, everytime a pup went anywhere near him he would growl and try and lunge. I was pretty furious that they brought a dog aggressive pup to puppy preschool. This was our puppies first socialization with other pups apart from his litter-mates and he was quite shy I'm sure if he had been the pup that got bitten it would've put our socializing back alot. It just seemed very irresponsible to me.

I met my first "schnoodle" tonight  Who was also quite aggressive.

We are also in Perth and looking for puppy pre-school. I am annoyed at myself for not doing it a bit sooner. We are in Thornlie and I rang loads of vets a few weeks back and asked their days and dates etc. I was hoping for a Saturday class so both me and my OH could go. The one place I found that do it on a Saturday starts in March and we will be away for 3 of the 4 classes. So I am biting the bullet and going to go for a mid week class and my OH will have to take him and tell me ALL about it (I work away Mon-Thurs).

As far as knowing a good one to go to, I am in need of advice as much as you.

Our pup is 9 1/2 weeks now and we chose to let him settle in at home with us rather than take him to pre-school straight away. I decided that, after a thread that I'll find and post too.

Let me know how you go and if I get to school soon I'll let you know who we go with and how they are.

Pity you don't live further north. Northern Suburbs Training & Obedience Dog Club has a great puppy school - I'd recommend it to anyone. They meet at Carine Open Space on Sunday mornings (9.00am, I think), and it only costs $45 for the whole year. Once your puppy is 16 weeks old, you can move on to the obedience classes.

Yes I can imagine Northern Suburbs would run great puppy classes. You could always give them a call and see if they can't recommend somewhere closer. There are lots of great and highly experienced trainers there and they are sure to have contacts.

I was originally looking at that one. It sounded fantastic but isn't the puppy preschool held in a park? So I was worried about Parvo.

We will definitely be going there for obedience training when he's older (had full vaccinations) though.

I want to change puppy preschool now. But O.H wants to give them another chance and then change if the aggressive pup is still there.

Hi

Yes, puppy preschool is held in a park, in two pens specially enclosed for the puppies and completely separated from the other dogs by several hundred metres. To my knowledge, no puppies have come down with parvo there. I'm not saying that it would never happen - and parvo is definitely something to fear when it comes to puppies. It can kill them in hours. However, I've work in vet clinics where they've held puppy classes and I wouldn't say that there was any less of a risk at a vet clinic either. The only way to eliminate parvo is to drench everything in bleach, and even then, you're not guaranteed to get it all. I've known people that have had no choice but to rip up concrete flooring pads to get rid of parvo once it strikes, so even a mopped vet clinic floor isn't 100% safe.

I have taken all of my puppies to Northern Suburbs and have never had a health scare with any of them - not so much as a sniffle. You must provide proof of vaccinations before joining. Vaccinations aren't total proof against parvo, but they are a good start.

It's up to you, though.

just like to share my experience with northern suburbs training and obedience. it wasnt a good one.they constantly put me and my dog down just because of her breed. every 2 seconds they would point us out to everyone and say "see that dog over there? its an akita. the owners gonna have a hard time with that one. chances are it will grow up to be dominant and aggressive". WTF?

when she moved up to the regular classes the trainers just didnt understand the breed. akitas have a shorter attention span than other dogs and needed to rotate lessons rather quickly otherwise they play up. spend more than 5 minutes on one thing, like sit, and they will go stupid. it was also quite hot and class was not held in the shade, so poor kuma was constantly trying to pull me to the shade and water bowls. they mistook this for bad behaviour and whacked a halti on her, believing it would solve all of her so called problems. yes, because a halti is going to cure heat stroke, right? they also got narky at me and others who asked if the class could be held in the shade.

We went to All Creatures vet puppy preschool in south perth. I definately wouldnt recommend them. Far too commercial, too short and too expensive. The vet nurse also gave innacurate information, waste of time and money as far as i was concerned. As for obedience clubs, im a member of the Perth dog training ang obedience club, it runs in the southern suburbs, and i would highly recommend it, it has some really great and helpful trainers.

i took the Love Pug to the VetWst classes and would never do it again.

the four weeks can be summed up with"this is what we sell and this is exactly what yourpup needs"

i will Definantly be neutralisin with my next pup as mu Pug as a far highter value for dogs then me.
