Does Anyone Know Where This Lead Came From?
gsdog2 replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've got that lead from:- For Dog Trainers.com in the US link I've just bought two more leads and can definately recommend them - delivery was only 10 days -
Hope she's ok - glad you took her to the vet . From past experience dog bites are usually "worse" than they appear and at the very least require AB's

What Do You Store All Your Dog Food In?
gsdog2 replied to Aztec Gold's topic in General Dog Discussion
from Sam's Warehouse - I think around $25.00 -
The only problem with that huski is finding a breeder who'll let you take a pup that's not fully vaccinated to the neighbours front yard - I'm pretty sure Indi's breeder wouldn't have allowed me to take her to their own front yard. They did allow me to spend time with the three girls I was interested in (without the rest of the litter around to distract them), but in the end I trusted their pick and couldn't be happier with her I found my breeder was more than happy to find the right dog for me when I said I was thinking of doing obedience with her - it's their name that's going to be out there so they want the dog that's just right for that particular competition ;)

There was a thread not so long ago on the same topic but I cant find it I agree with Ons - have the crate beside the bed so when the pup cries you can reach down and let it feel your fingers and know you're there (after being with a litter of puppies, nights can be very lonely) or your pup will let you know it's time for toilet. We have crate-trained our Goldie and GSD and both slept initially beside us in their crates with no hassle of crying through the night keeping everyone awake as was the way with the old method of locking them in the laundry (or similar) and let them cry all night

This is very similar to my GSD Indi's experience except her issues went further than itchy skin. So far she has had no skin problems and usually by this time of the year we've had a visit to the dermatologist. I'm sticking to the triennial C3 vaccination - in the long run it's saved me a lot of money at the dermatolist
-
My vet gave me exactly the same story (that's why I went to the vet down the road who had it in stock). They also said they contacted the drug company to ask if they would guarantee their C3 vaccination and they were told no (do they "guarantee" C5?). It costs less to get one trienniel vaccination and KC only when you need it. In the end everyone has to make their own choices and I feel the younger the dog the more cautious you have to be (Parvo is everywhere ).
-
I used to have my dogs vaccinated with C5 and without fail the ones that went into kennels would still come home with Kennel Cough. Then Miss Indi came into our lives and as always she too was vaccinated with C5 and within weeks had serious skin problems (in winter ). However, the following winter I still went ahead and had her vaccinated with C5 and the whole skin problem started again - meaning visits to the Dermatologist! Last winter I asked my vet for the 3 year C3 vaccine and they refused - so I found a vet who would. Guess what? No vaccination this year and no skin problems I'm sure some people will say she's grown out of it (and maybe they're right) but I feel it was the vaccine that caused it, as it always seemed to happen within a very short time of vaccination. The simple answer is - find a vet who's happy to give your dog the vaccination YOU want

Steve will be covering in detail all the principles and strategies he employs in order to train a dog to work to it's maximum level. How to create and maintain a love of training, so that the dog will continue to perform at its peak. These principals can be applied to all aspects of competitive dog training, no matter which discipline is involved. Julie I've been to a number of Steve's seminars and if anyone's thinking of going - DO IT!!! He motivates you as well as informing you . I don't know of anyone who's walked away from one of his seminars disappointed - he's also very entertaining Just wish he'd visit Qld again

too cute!!!

Pauchel that's so nice of you to say that I'm aware that these pups are going to be very smart and very energetic but I'd like to think after having a number of shepherds and one Goldie and living on over an acre of land I'll more or less be prepared (as I can be anyway ;) ) . I'm allowed to take it to work (every second day) which is a very noisy mechanical repair workshop so that will help expose the pup to noisy environments. As I already have two dogs I'm hoping it will be "easier" when it comes time to give the pup back - that's my plan anyway
-
K&P - when I spoke to the guy yesterday he said they will come out to your house and "suggest" things you might want to move out of the way when you get your pup. Hmmmmmmm .... I'm guessing he means out of "chewing" way

......my son used to work for Boeing (within Amberley Base) and he said they were always warned if someone yelled out to them to "STOP or I'll release my dog", you MUST STOP or suffer the consequences
-
I'm thinking of becoming a carer - I live not far from the Amberley Base where they have a puppy care program and after speaking to them yesterday, so far I meet their criteria (even with two other dogs). Now I need to decide if I want to take the next step, but before doing so I'd like to find out from other carers what their experiences with this program have been like.

Phone call made to RAAF Amberley - sounds VERY interesting and they're ok with me having two other dogs! They're sending me an email with more info

Such a lovely pic - but so, so sad

Whats Required For First Obedience Trial
gsdog2 replied to Kaffy Magee's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ok - thanks for that Gary . As I said it's been a couple of years since I've been in the ring. I worry about groups in the CCD ring due to the level of training of some of the dogs. I've had occasion in the CD ring in groups where a dog stood over my dog (which was on a qually) in a threatening stance. My dog stood but didn't react to the other dog and the judge allowed me to redo the excercise without the other dog in the ring - and he quallied! All of the dogs in CD at that time had to at least pass a Sweepstakes before entering the ring - this won't happen now. To add to that a dog in the CCD ring doesn't require the same level of training ie. all onlead. I know this could have happened in any ring but I've had a number of other triallers warn me against the CCD ring - for the safety of my own dog. -

Do you have Sweepstakes in WA? The last time I trialled in Qld you had to qualify in CD Sweepstakes before you could nominate your dog to trial in CD (this is not needed to trial in CCD). -
Oh I'm sooooooo tempted!!! I have two dogs (just lost my male GSD earlier this year) and yes, I'm allowed to have 4 dogs as I'm on over an acre. I think I might make a phone call tomorrow ;)

Do you know how they feel about carers owning other dogs?

If you do a search I think you'll find a thread on this subject. From memory some of the suggestions were to steward for your local club - in the CCD ring. It'll give you a very good idea of what's involved in the first level of Obedience competition. Another good idea is to do a search on You Tube. If you search CCD trials you'll find plenty of video ;) -
I've worked with many vets over the years, and not one has known what crate training was. Even once explined to them I've heard vets advise clients against it. Oh that's such a shame . My sister was telling me she took her new puppy to the vet last week and she proudly told him she was using a crate. He was thrilled - he told her that when a crate trained dog was hospitalised they usually settled quicker than the non-crate trained dogs. And to emphasise the fact he had a dog making a huge racket out the back - probably not crate trained ;)

Heard Bondi vet on the radio the other day and he KNOWS he looks like the Chesty Bonds character
-
The last show I watched was months ago on puppy training - when you bring your pup home put it in the bathroom or laundry at night and let it cry . No mention of crates at all - most vets love crate-trained dogs I thought . Most of his training advice is at least 20 years old
