  1. Terra Nik - thank you so much. I am now spoiled for choice - it is just a matter of deciding which one
  2. With work hours I just can't commit to evening obedience classes. I was hoping someone might know of a weekend. class? I live in Seven Hills but it doesn't have to be local. Thanks
  3. I'm with Erny - fantastic you are socialising your dog with large breeds. And a behaviourist is the way to go. As a big dog owner, I am aways wary of anything small and fluffy because so many of them are attack dogs due to their lack of training and socialisation.
  4. I came into this thread looking for some insights into the personaity of one of my dogs adopted from rescue. He is far from pure, just a mutt really, but there is a fair dollop of Stafford in there. I think the above quote goes a long way towrds answering my questions but I would really appreciate any other insights into his character He is generally good with other dogs and has seen a lot of rescue foster dogs come through here. However he has some issues, particuarly if another dog growls at him or is around the same size and tries to dominate him. Then he shows a degree of agression that is frightening and makes me worry that he could even fight to the death, such is his detemination and blind focus when in a rage, This has only happened a handful of times and I have been there to pull him off. I gather this is not that unusual with this type of breed? I was considering taking him to behaviourist to have him assessed, I'm afraid I'm used to danes who are much dopier and predictable.
  5. No - the dog isn't anxious. I think it is true motion sickness. I'll pass all your suggestions on to the owner. He has the dog booked in at his vet n Saturday to see if she can help with a solution but I promised to ask around. Thanks everyone.
  6. That was going to be my suggestion Worm him and if it doesn't clear then get him t the vet for tests.
  7. Well recently I rehomed an 8 month old rottyx to an absolutely fantastic home. I really want this dog to work out there but the problem is he gets carsick on a regular basis. The gent really wants to adopt him but a large part of his life revolves around travelling around the country in his van with his dogs accmpanying him. If we can't find a solution to the carskickness though, this really isn't going to work out. Does anyne have any experience with this?
  8. With dog rescue and constant fostering, my own dogs had better be bloody social or I will have something to say about it ;) No time for dog parks or worrying about socialisation in rescue. One of my dogs was a pup when I started fostering. He has seen a couple of hundred dogs come through here and he has become the most well adjusted adult because of it. I will take any and every opportunity to socialise mine with strange dogs.
  9. Whether or not she should have been rescued is now a moot point. So she is being seen by a specialist? I would now be relying on their prognosis and making a decision on her future based on that. Particularly as I have no experience with heart disease in dogs. If she has a reasonable chance at quality of life without a prohibitive bill in ongoing medication I would do what is necessary to get her well and keep her myself if no home could be found. Otherwise it would be best to let her go now and be satisfied with the fact that you provided a loving hand in her last hours. The vet should be able to guide you in this decision ;)
  10. Noisymina and Chiccy, don't worry about soft raised surfaces. During the day they have a choice of sofas and I can hardly find a spot on the bed myself, it is so packed with dogs
  11. Yeah, I thought they were warts too but the vet says it is due to chronic scratching of the irritated area. He doesn't scratch there now but the damage is done.
  12. Unfortunate you only have two vets in town. Check into the dane thread and introduce yourself there. Many knowledgeable people there including a dane owning vet nurse and several breeders. Dane diets are a passion with us
  13. The vet has prescribed antibiotics to clear any remaining skin infection. This was mainly for his stomach - check this out for just plain nasty! I have vitamin E cream so will start using that but I have been thinking long and hard about this and have decided to take Chay to see a vet I know of who is a bit of a dane specialist. I know I will totally trust her diagnosis and recommended treatment. Thanks for the help guys Chiccy - I had to do a double take when I saw a ccouple of danes I didn't recognize. Please pop into the dane thread in Breed Subforums and tell us more about yourself and your danes Welcome to DOL
  14. I have seen a vet and she recommended some sort of ointment/cream to be used. Just wondering if anyone has had success with this for of treatment in a severe case like this and what type of cream they used. Also wondering if anyone has tried surgical options.
  15. Chay, a four year old great dane was surrendered to Hawkesbury pound and he is now in foster care with me. You can see on the photos the enlarged and inflamed calloused on his elbows. These are the worst but there are several smaller enlarged callouses on his feet and legs. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this and what treatment they used. These callouses aften ooze a small amount of blood.
  16. All of the posts above have very valid points. Personally I don't have a problem with siblings being raised together provided it is a male and a female. Double vet bills - double the work - but I've done it a couple of times and have had absolutely no regrets. Never had any dominance issues and never had the dogs bonding too closely. The companionship is invaluable. I would never again have only one dog
  17. I am so sorry. What an absolute tragedy  RIP Sweet Boy
  18. Thankyou for your kind words everybody. Xander's ashes arrived today so at least my boy is home. Our time together was far too short but I feel priviledged to have had that time. He will always be my baby boy. The grieving is easier now as I have a new little dane puppy, Giselle, who needs my love and care. She makes me smile through the tears. Introducing Giselle
  19. Xander was given his wings yesterday after the discovery of advanced osteosarcoma. I only had my big boofer for a couple of years but it was a wonderful time for both of us. Xander was a cordelia's rescue and will be sadly missed by his foster mum, Sas. Goodbye, my love xxxox
  20. I wouldn't expect trouble. It is very likely that if they are great mates now, they will continue to be so. Last week I had my three males and two foster males. The two youngest were staffy types and around the same age and the two oldest are both great danes and close in age as well. If there is no tension at the first meeting, I figure all will go well. My youngest, the staffy, is going through that difficult age and trying to assert himself. I have been careful to pull him into line and it seems to have worked.
  21. Believe me, you will know when the time is right. There is something in the expression that changes. I kept a dog alive and happy for several years using various antiinflammatories . His legs were slowly becomming paralysed but that caused him no pain. I would lift him to his feet and then he could walk a little bit - even around the block. The hard part was the cleaning up of accidents and keeping him clean etc. I must say it was exhausting as he was a large dog but it was worth it. Then one day he no longer had the strength to stay upright when I lifted him up - you could see it in his eyes that it was his time.
  22. I don't know anything about agility so I will be popping down to Castle Hill with Bozley next Thursday to check it out. I just want to watch and talk to some people to see if this is the thing for us.
  23. Kaz asked for obedience first with a view to moving on to something like agility So every one is right. I figure Bozley shouldn't do a sport until he learns a little obedience first lol
  24. Yes, Dundas is a suburb. will 'whereis' it anyway
