  1. OoOoo.. thanks so much Julie - its great to know someone with local knowledge too!!! yes, definitely through GAP!! We lost our girl only a few short months ago (not a greyhound), and whilst we are still dealing with the sadness, it is only a matter of time until we are ready to welcome another furry member to the family
  2. Hi all We are thinking about getting a greyhound in the near future.... I was wondering how they go outside during winter?? We are in Perth, and although the winters are fairly mild here, I am concerned about their short coats and if they feel the cold more than other dogs! (We have a GSD, and 3 cats also)
  3. Just noting this - baby snakes are still just as dangerous as adults!!! - due to the fact (so I'm told) that babies don't know how to regulate the amount of venom they inject - so they inject all of it - whereas adults generally keep some for "back up"..... Anyways - whether this is true or not - babies still produce the same type of venom - so are still very dangerous!!!
  4. So glad to hear she is feeling better LM. Here is a website I've found really helpful for my girl http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/site_map.htm
  5. Thinking of your little family at this time Willow - we all have our fingers crossed that its something simple...
  6. Thanks westiemum - we've been through a couple of vets - thankfully we've finally found one that seems to know what she's talking about.... Luckily I'm one of those crazy dog people - and usually do my research before and after, so have all the tough questions to ask and challenge her on different things... Thankfully for my girl, the vet is confident that once we get the meds right - she will be fine...! Hope you have some luck with your boy too.. but sounds like your vet is onto it!
  7. for you... I don't have any experience with focal epilepsy, but my girl suffers from grand mals.. and has been for the last 9 months... We are on meds, but still trying to find the right levels, and unfortunately she is still suffering from then Its VERY distressing as the owner, and I understand your heartbreak. I have started giving my dog vanilla icecream after her seizures, and have been reading up on the icepack trick. Unfortunately we aren't able to get too close to her during them, as she lashes out Would it be worth getting a second opinion from another vet? I've been using the website as a reference over the last few months... http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/site_map.htm Hope it helps - sorry I can't be of much assistance...
  8. Was looking for something else - and found this.... Not sure if you've seen it before http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...11&hl=perth
  9. I came across this website the other week - http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2007/10/...art-interactive You can change it to kilograms and then adjust the weight for your dog, and it gives you a rough idea
  10. Hrm, thanks for that dogdayz - very interesting... Yes, it would have been more than 12 hours since I fed her, she certainly may have been eating something else from the garden... I will look into your information regarding Creon... the directions are definitely "1 hour before feeding" but I sure don't want to be doing any further damage!!!!!
  11. Cheers Arty... was wondering that, as she gets the odd lamb shank too.....
  12. Thanks dianed - can I ask what Nucadol is? - is it available over the counter??
  13. Thanks heaps guys... will definately try without the beef..... fingers crossed!!! Arty - do you get the roo meat from supermarket? or is there a supplier in Perth??
  14. Thanks settrlvr - you must be a mind reader...!! I've just decided tonight to drop the beef out when I was mixing up the latest BARF.... will see how it goes! Thanks Kavik for the link - very interesting!
  15. Oh, she also gets fish oil! (only a recent thing since seeing the holistic vet) - We were also given some herbs to assist her itching, and some "digestive enzymes" - which I have stopped due to the Pancreatic Enzymes....
  16. We are on the human medicine of - Creon (not sure what number - will check) 2 tabs - 1 hour before dinner. These have only just started - as of yesterday. BARF - mix of beef and chicken mince, vegies and fruit, offal as a base - then lamb shanks, bones, chicken neck/wings - fish, egg, yoghurt...... not all at once obviously!!! (I tried the Dr B's lamb patties - but she wouldn't eat them!) She has been known to eat poop, but not on a regular basis... Has some diarrhea but usually poops are fine. She does get the runs if she drinks different water other than from home - but always just put it down to sensitive stomach. yes, I'm currently feeding her about 3 times as much as my other dog... and still can't keep the weight on!!!! (other one is also super active and she's not so much) We've not had any skin problems before - so is very strange, and hard to find the cause!
  17. Recently we've been having some problems with my almost 3yo GSD female. She's a rescue dog that was a foster failure - we got her at 8 months old and she had severe pneumonia. She recovered, although we were warned about there being some scarring on her lungs due to the infection. She's always been a smaller than average GSD - vet put this down to malnutrition as a puppy. She's a happy healthy girl (desexed at 8months also) Fast forward til now - we moved house 6 months ago. Now (or so it seems) I can't keep weight on her. She has dropped from 28kg (nice healthy weight - for her) to 23kg. We've been back to the vets a couple of times. First time they suspected EPI - did the tests, they came back negative.... She also has had bad skin for about 6weeks - 2 months or so. (skin scraping etc) First started her on cortizone, which cleared it up- but it came back. Tried Maleseb wash - with little relief. I sought help from a holistic vet, but after one month there was no improvement. Back to the vets just recently - more cortizone for the itching, and find out she has lost another kg - now 23.... Discuss again weight issues and skin problems - vet is still convinced it is EPI (same clinic but different vet) - although tests came back negative?? Anyways, was suggested to start her on the EPI treatment (pancreatic enzymes) so see if this helps (which we have done) She is fed a BARF diet, and on recommendation of the vet, we swapped her to Eukanuba after the first visit - but the itching did not stop, and her weight barely changed... we are back on BARF now. (Also is wormed regularly) Does anyone know how accurate the EPI testing is?? Has anyone had any experience in this area?? She is bright, good coat, clear eyes - basically nothing wrong with her... except she's REALLY skinny, and has some skin problems.....
  18. I enjoyed our puppy classes with our very first dog. I think the best bit was the freebies we got at the end of each class - haha.. you know me Willow - anything for something free But we got different things each week - samples of different treats, shampoos, toys, and.. other stuff.... pamphlets etc. We got a booklet also, which was pretty good, coz it was mostly a "free-for-all" play session for the dogs, and REALLY hard to concentrate on what the vet nurse was saying.... so yer - not good there (first time owners!!!) Its also hard to know what you don't know - specially when its your first time.... so being a bit more broad about topics would have been better - but..... I didn't know that at the time It was good, as my dog now loves the vets - and she remembers the nurses/smells etc...... - although we've changed vets a couple of times now!! (moving etc)
  19. Can I just ask why and where you would need to use this for?? I'm just thinking purely from situations where you may not be present, and your dog needs to do things - ie, at Boarding Kennels - or he gets loose and someone tries to help/rescue him..... Or..... at the vets??? What if something terrible happens (heaven forbid) and they need an extended stay at the vets - how would this effect him??? Can you explain to me the need/use for this type of command/training?
  20. Mars Coat King all the way!!! I find the Furminator's teeth is just too fine for my dogs - GSD and a BCx Initially I bought a Furminator, and whilst you get results, the Coat King is so much better on their coats! I sold my Furminator and bought a Coat King......... no turning back!
  21. Think yourself lucky she IS waking you up!!!!!! Imagine the 6am routine if she had pee'd and pooped all in the crate....... or even... 2am wake up call to the smell of GSD poop!!! MMmMMmMmm With time, it will pass
  22. Sorry you will miss the day RidgyGirl! bumping in case anyone is still thinking about it
  23. Certainly is! All breeds, all cross, all ages
