  1. Nope, no health issues. I encourage her along, call her, distract her, sometimes use treats or a toy, but as you said before, i didnt want her to learn that stopping means treats, sometimes give a little tug to let her know that im not stopping. Its quite strange really, because i just cannot figure out why she has progressively gotten worse on lead for no apparent reason. At first i thought she might be scared for some reason, then i thought maybe stubborn or just plain being naughty?
  2. I dont know whether chis are notorious for this sort of thing, but one of mine (just turned a year) has always been a bad walker, ive tried all types of techniques, but shes recently gotten really bad, she wont walk a all!! She just drags along behind and sprawls out on all fours. I have picked her up on occasion because i couldnt wait around forever waiting for her to walk, but i know i really shouldnt as it just reinforces undesirable behaviours, what if she was a big dog and i couldnt pick her up. Im really at a loss. The other is a perfect walker, so i cant walk them together at all, i'd like to hear if figure anything out emmala!! Good luck!
  3. We went to All Creatures vet puppy preschool in south perth. I definately wouldnt recommend them. Far too commercial, too short and too expensive. The vet nurse also gave innacurate information, waste of time and money as far as i was concerned. As for obedience clubs, im a member of the Perth dog training ang obedience club, it runs in the southern suburbs, and i would highly recommend it, it has some really great and helpful trainers.
  4. Sounds ridiculous. If these viruses havnt been a problem yet then why would we start vaccinating for them now?? I dont know but it sounds a bit scammy to me. Go to another vet.
  5. Its not the size of the pieces, but the fact that they are very hard. My chihuahua had a lot of trouble with them and i ended up having to crush or soak them. I doubt she would be able to chew them with 6 teeth.
  6. I know that EP is a fantastic food but that means nothing if the dogs wont eat it which is what ended up happening with mine. I have a small breed and was feeding Holistic duck and oatmeal, and holistic chicken. I found that her coat lost condition, and she was also pooping one heck of a lot, which i found strange for such a high quality food. Eventually she just wouldnt eat it anymore so I changed over to advance. Much smaller kibble which she will eat happily, less poop and she is in great condition.
  7. I have just swapped to interceptor. I also thought it might be overkill, but with worming every month would the doses be less?
  8. Wow that must have been a scare! Thank goodness she is ok!
  9. I havnt trusted mine ever since she told me that there were absolutely NO risks with the Proheart injection. She was adament and generally belittled me (whilst contradicting herself at the same time) so have changed vets since that.
  10. I would say apart from a professional trainer which would definately be a good idea if the problem is serious enough, join an obedience club. It has done wonders for my chihuahua. It doesnt just teach the dog, it teaches you by giving you techniues to better deal with and manage your dog.
  11. I saw that last night on its me or the dog and was wondering about it aswell. Ive heard of an implant but not an injection...??
  12. For me the point of walking my puppy is not for exercise but for training and socialisation. To have a happy dog who is not couped up in the house all day, to be around people and have her see what goes on. In my opinion, to only start walking at 6 months just would have been too late. If i had not of gotten her used to walking onlead i would have had no chance. Taking her out on lead for the first time at 6 months would have been a huge shock, i dont think it would be fair, the breeder told me to get her used to it as soon as possble after vaccinations.
  13. I think they are good brands but have a lot of fillers such as corn and that...
  14. I found this on another board and seeing as theres heaps of food questions thought it might be useful How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100: 1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points 2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point 94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D <70 = F Here are some foods that have already been scored. 15. Good on you for doing your research and preparing. My best advice that hasnt already been said would be to make sure you stick to your routine, dont change it for him, he has to fit in. I recently got a puppy aswell and being a full time uni student she has to stay home alone some of the time and she does fine with this just make sure you get him used to it. Also i'd suggest feeding him in the morning and maybe leaving out a bit of food during the day while he's young, although some dogs will tend to eat it all at once rather than when their hungry (mine did) so you'll have to see how he goes with that, and then feed him again in the evening. Hope everything goes well
  16. It could be a number of things in a puppy that young, i'd recommend taking her to the vet, better to be safe than sorry.
