  1. My dogs don't really beg but when my daughter comes to visit with her kids it's a different thing. My grandson is in a wheelchair and his food is put straight on the tray (no plate to throw lol), dogs don't beg from him, they just stare intently at the floor for bits of food to fall off. Amazing how fast they learnt that, funny to watch 3 dogs sitting there staring at the floor.

  2. Hmmm, so it's seeming maybe a Pug wouldn't be the best fit for us. I had thought they were a pretty "easy-fit" sort of breed, but may have been wrong. Maybe I've been wrongly influenced by how often they are used for cross breeding, poor Puggies :o Gosh I love those little faces though :o

I have worried about Saxon's zoomies and wrestles, plus the cats, with a Pug. Saxon's also reasonably confident but I suppose a bit of a sooky Mummy's boy... maybe that's a factor too.

I'm also going to add that I'd like to find something within the next 6 months or so... I know people often wait longer for a pure breed but for me 6 months is a pretty long time :cheer: . I just want a nice healthy pet dog, raised in a happy family environment, that will fit in with the household and be happy :o

Hee hee! Your list does not an easy fit make!!

Just snuck a look on the DOL puppy notices, no chin babies but there are a couple of Aussie babies available, so you chances of getting a pup in the next six months or so might be higher than I thought.

Dunnwaren, I grew up in a home where both Aussies and Silkies were bred and shown and I do have to say that the Aussies are much less intense than the Silkies and more bombproof as a general rule, to my experience anyway.

Mostly I'm thinking of the OP's existing dog here, where Paps and Silkies etc might turn out a bit strong and overwhelming to him in the long run?

Well my thoughts on that is if you get a baby it's unlikely to overwhelm and older dog. They can be intense, not sure how long ago you lived with silkys but a lot of work has gone into the temperaments and now they tend to be well balanced dogs. I will admit years ago they were known to be snappy but in my 30 years of breeding them I have never had one snap at me yet. I still like the sound of a Tibbie, the ones I've had dealings with have all been very laid back.

  3. Ok, you probably know what breed I am going to suggest. I also have a sheltie here who wont stand still for more then a minute, would hate to see him locked up in a small yard 10 hours a day. He is neutered so has a very big coat that takes quite a bit of grooming especially when he drops coat. Now a silky is fun loving, easy to groom and very trainable. Lots of them do obedience and agility. Mine all get along well with other dogs. They do tend to forget what size they are sometimes though. Then again I love Tibbies and Papillons although Paps can be vocal.

  4. I really don't think taking him to the toilet after asleep for only 40 minutes is going to work lol. You are never going to get any sleep, ignore that for a while and see what happens. He has a puppy pad in there if he needs to go, even though you are not making a fuss of him he is still getting attention.

Crate training is a great tool, all mine sleep in their crates for the first few months, they learn to love them and even now if I leave a crate open on the floor the adults will go to sleep in there. I never travel anywhere without my dogs in crates, it's safe and comfortable for them. There are lots of hints on here for crate training, I personally put their bedding in it, leaving the door open during the day then at night puppy goes in with a toy and chewy with the door shut. Doesn't take long for them to learn, all you need is to be more determined then the pup.

  5. There will be lots of things that frighten him at first, especially if he isn't used to a certain noise. Best to just ignore his reaction like you did, don't make a fuss of him. It wont be long and he will feel safe and secure with you and probably bark at things just to show how big and tough he is lol.

  6. Cute puppy, can I make a suggestion? I would clip his ears and feet if he was mine. Ears need clipping so they will stand up, sometimes with the weight of hair the ears wont stand up, and his feet will be easier to keep clean and free from burrs and grass seeds. I clip both when my pups are 6 weeks old.

  7. Congrats on the new puppy! I feed mine three times a day, I leave it for them for half hour then pick it up until the next feed. As for housetraining, don't forget they are babies and it takes a while before their bladders are strong enough to hold on. Just keep taking him out after a sleep, feed and play, lots of praise is needed when they go to the toilet, accidents are ignored here, I just clean it up. We need pics!!!!

  8. Separation does help, makes them both keener. I only run my dog/bitch together after two ties. Quite often the dog shows no interest in the bitch while Im there once they are running together. Edited to say that I have one bitch who screams blue bloody murder regardless if she is ready or not, I have to hold her every time because when she screams my dog just leaves her alone lol, he obviously doesn't like the screaming.

  9. My sister has a beagle, she has almost ruined her backyard. Dug up trees etc so now they have fences around all their trees to try to save them. The dog comes inside but my sister/brother-in-law have to watch her like a hawk or she sneaks things outside and chews them all up. Not a breed for a beginner I don't think. Looks can be deceiving lol.

  10. Must admit we went home about 4, it got so hot for the silky pups. I was constantly spraying them with water and wetting their tummys. Lots of kids got to pat them though and my granddaughter and her friend got 3rd prize with two of them in the pair of pets lol, they were very happy with their ribbon. We were in the petting area.

  11. My bitches whelp on lots of newspaper in the whelping box, once finished I put down carpet with paper underneath. It gets changed once a week, easy to hose down and the bitches can't scratch it up. I have a six week old litter here now on blankets and the bitch still scratches it up! I lost a puppy once when it got caught in the blankets, never again! When they are about 3 weeks old I only cover half the box with carpet so they pee on the paper. Good luck with your pending litter.
