  1. Dont know about the OMG product, but be careful of the Pixie Dust, we love it the judges hate it !!! Gets all over them. I love the Reviva Coat, has the most gorgeous smell.
  2. I'll train this week at Carseldine and next week in Caboolture. The weekend hours don't really suit us as we're at shows or trials. I'm in the flyball group with my Kelpie X at Pine Rivers and there a few people trialling and I like their training methods. That's why I've decided to go there. Hey !! were you there on tuesday night ?? I was there with my black kelpie Shamus.. will be there next week too We will have to try and meet up ! I know what you mean about training at Teamwork, I have alot of shows and obedience trials coming up which is why I may not be able to go again for a couple of weeks. I am doing a double OT at Gympie this saturday and the same at Maryborough next saturday :D
  3. I go to Teamwork too !!! havent been for a couple of weeks due to commitments, but sure I will see you in the next few weeks... I also attend Metro club on Monday nights, but have started going to Pine Rivers for some extra trialling, last night was my first night and after 10 years of obedience training I learnt a few things from Andrew that I never knew about, so would thoroughly recommend going there. Make sure that you let them know that you want to end up trialling and Im sure they will take you under their wing and give you any extra guidance you might need ! Metro of course is also a great club and I would definately recommend them ! Aldo the president, has shown me a wonderful heeling tip that Im hoping will make my boy into a heeling maniac
  4. At least start training your dog to stay so that if you do see it across the street, you can get it to stay there until you cross to collect it... (and dont get mad at it when you get there coz it will only run away next time) And... what everyone else said. Sometimes we take our dogs for granted that they will always be the same way.. How many times have you heard.. 'but she has never done that before, always been well behaved'... Take every precaution you can to look after your precious 4-legged family members.. treat them like you would small children.. would you let your young child wonder out the front yard alone? PS some dogs have natural road sense, some dont. Prevention is always better than cure.
  5. I was at Redlands for years, training and instructing at both obedience and agility. They are all really nice people, I love catching up with them at trials.
  6. Unfortunately I think some vets are also there just to take our money, they dont all have our babies best interests at heart... they know if the dog has seizures, means more money for them as you take them to the vet... and if you loose them.. more money for them to put the dog down.. and then you will get another one and the cycle starts all over again Im afraid I dont have alot of faith in vets, I would rather trust breeders and people who have had dogs for many years like here on DOL..
  7. So is Sentinal ok to cut in half? Say if I buy the one for large dogs and cut it in half to use for my medium dogs? does anyone do this? As I have a few dogs Im always looking for ways to save money (I do this with Advocate Spot on)
  8. Ive got kelpies and have also had cattle dogs, I find the best comb to use is not the really fine one like the flea combs, but a normal comb with thicker and a bit wider teeth, I picked one up from crazy clarks for $2 once. It has short and long alternating teeth in it. There is probably a couple of mm between the teeth and pulls alot of hair out without being too harsh. It they have alot of undercoat when shedding then the rake is good. I know alot of dogs dont like the slicker.
  9. I would think that a local produce store and anyone selling horse or farm gear would sell what you are after... dont forget to get a mains powered charge, not a battery one, this will give a more constant and powerful kick too...
  10. Shamus's sister Storm (Suthenskys Superstar) won 1st place in her CCD trial on saturday night with a qualifying score of 92 out of 100. Looks like she wasnt going to let her brother get too far ahead of her in the trialing stakes. !! Well done to Storm and her owner Carlie !!! :p
  11. Thanks Mollipop, I was quietly confident Shamus could do it, but so hard to tell with these novice dogs as to whether they will put it together on the night, and I was so out of practice, I was worried that I would stuff it up for him Congrats on your pass and good luck for your future trials !!!
  12. Check chains are not supposed to choke a dog! A quick 'pop' on the chain and the dog stops pulling and walks nicely beside you. [/i] That is why I wouldn't use a check chain on her and went to the sporn pack leader instead. I agree with you JBBB, and a dog can be taught not to pull in 5 mins, no matter what collar or contraption you use, Ive proved this many times with friends that have dogs that they cannot take for a walk. Ive never tried the sporn harnesses but I do know of a few people that have tried them and they didnt work. Anything used is only as good as the handler using it. Ive seen far too many dogs on haltis that have their head strung up in an uncomfortable position because the handler has no idea what they are doing. But back to Law's original question, as most people have said, it all depends on the dog and what the dog is going to be doing... I use martingales always for all my dogs (I like the ones with the chain part in it mostly)... the older dogs will have a check chain on for the show ring but that is not for correction, it is for looks.
  13. I love the martingales because i have had a few babies pull out of their flat collars if they get a fright... I find you have to put a flat collar on too tight to stop that from happening. The martingale allows a lovely loose feel but will tighten just enough to stop slipping out of it (without choking the pup like a chain will) I even keep martingales on them right up to adulthood.
  14. I was so totally rapt !! very nervous doing the workout !! but so great that he got through it all and did his groups beautifully Weeeeeeeelllll....... first mistake was I gave the signal to stop (while in fast pace) too quickly and he spun out and dropped kinda out in front, then after the figure 8, the final sit to finish the heeling exercise, I must have done something different as he went to sit then stood poor baby, so that lost us 6 points all up (probably a couple of other little things in there too) and for the recall I started with him sitting crooked so lost 2 points there... but gives me stuff to polish up for the next trial which is a double at Gympie early April !
  15. Well we survived our first CCD trial. Shamus did me proud by qualifying and scoring 92 out of 100 !!! :p and he won first place :D The only mistakes made were mine :p (getting my timing wrong with him) other than that I was rapt how he went. Had a heap of friends there to cheer me on, which was great :D the food they supplied was pretty awesome too !! Here are some pics of me and Shamus with his first place ribbon PS sorry about the back view of Shamus (although he looks good from any angle !!) hehe
  16. wow ! I didnt know there were so many uses... A friend of mind told me recently that ACV reduces the size of a bitch's nipples after a season and will also do the same, along with drying up milk, after weaning babies..... has anyone tried that?
  17. Where do you have your hands when you do your recall... If you have them at your sides, put them together in front, hanging down, with the treats in them, then the dog can focus on your hands as he comes in for the recall and hopefully that will stop him from running past. My kelpies have very fast recalls and this really helps them... I just hope your not a little whisp of a thing, as they can still knock you for six if they come in too fast !! LOL Brace yourself !!!
  18. Well done Mollipop !! Arent the groups just terrifying !! Im not pushing my boy for passes, mostly entering to see where we are at. Any mistakes he makes lately are 95% my fault !! Still getting my timing right with him, but he is such a joy to work with. Thanks to you all for your encouragement ! I know that once the judge says the first word "forward", I will be ok, I usually just forget everything, listen to the judge and trust my dog. It is the before part that is so nerve racking !!!
  19. 8th March marks my first step back into the obedience ring for a couple of years. This is also the first time in 7 years Ive competed with a young dog !! And already the nerves are setting in Last night I had a dream about all the things that could go wrong LOL as you do... OH well, I guess I have another 2 weeks to get it out of my system At least they have made the step into obedience trialling a little less overwhelming with the CCD... My Black Kelpie boy Shamus is coming along really nicely, a keen worker who is already trying to second guess what I want, and that is only after about 6 weeks of training... 6 weeks ago he knew nothing but being a show dog (now 14 months old), he didnt even know what sit meant, let alone anything else. He is learning so quickly, which is making it heaps of fun to get back into obedience again. His litter sister Storm will also be making her debut into the obedience ring at the same trial :D Im so proud of her and her owner. And totally wrap to have 2 kids from the same litter to be competing together.... So if you are at Caboolture trial on 8th March look out for Suthenskys Shamelesstar (Shamus) and Suthenskys Superstar (Storm) I will be the one that looks like she is about to pass out
  20. There is a company called Bucket O' Beef, but I dont have any details, maybe search online or yellow pages.
  21. I dont give anything extra to my dogs at the moment, they seem to be doing very well on their Proplan diet... I have done things like give Chamomile tea and calming Bach flower remedies to an overactive dog when I was doing obedience trials with her... Hmm for the underactive dog, why not look at some Bach flower remedies... Im sure there would be many people here who could recommend something for a sluggish dog.
  22. I feed Pro Plan performance to my dogs, ive tried many kibble brands but find that one is by far the best for my dogs (big bonus is the output :D or lack of it) I also feed chicken wings and brisket bones and fish etc, but I find with my lifestyle that a kibble diet for my dogs is easiest for me, so I get the best I can for them... Kibble is also easy to take away for weekend shows etc...
  23. As we have seen from most posts on this thread it seems to be common with kelpies, well as we all no they are part Dingo :D Actually Wagalot, Kelpies are not part Dingo If I remember correctly, when they started the kelpie breed they tried to mix Dingo in with them but didnt like the cross, so didnt go ahead with it. The Australian Cattle Dog is the one with Dingo in it. Which does surprise me as the kelpie looks more like a Dingo than the Cattle Dog does...Which, i guess, is why so many people think Kelpies are related to Dingos. PS love your Dingo !!! They are such beautiful dogs.
  24. I think it is a kelpie thing... mine are always one top of my....................BED !!!
  25. the world seems to be full of idiots that think they know your dog better than you, all you can do is just walk away and refocus him on you, if they think you are rude, then that is their problem, much better to do that than end up in a dog fight !! A friend of mine has just been through all the same thing, and he is great now.
