At What Age Do You Start Training?
huski replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think the paddock bashing club training is really geared towards pet people. I don't know any triallers who would do a full class with their dog. I start training from day one, it doesn't have to be formal obedience immediately but you can start laying good foundations. I did basic training with Daisy from eight weeks but I didn't know anything about formal obedience back then so what and how I train will be different with the next pup. -
Ah ok I get it now, thanks Staranais. I too wonder where you would draw the line for a dog who had little food drive but massive prey drive. I would draw the line at starving my dog for days or depriving to the point it impacts their quality of life, but having her be hungry for a training session is not a bad thing IMO. She's always hungry on some level anyway!

What if you had a dog who had Erik's drive for toys for food? Daisy is always hungry. Even when she's eaten almost 2kg of cat food in less than five minutes. She always wants to eat. I don't know if she'd ever stop eating. Also, if I didn't cut out her meals when we were doing lots of training, she'd get fat very quickly. I don't understand how you could feel comfortable creating desire for one natural instinct but not another (prey vs food).

Maybe we could do an occasional meet up halfway somewhere!

I don't know of any club in Brisbane that train the way I do. An hour of class is just not congruent to the way I train Daisy. I would rather five minutes of 110% than an hour of paddock bashing. I am happy to pop into class to do a SFE or group stays etc. Our club also does a night of casual training each week where members can use the grounds and the equipment to do what they want. I would love to have a group of triallers to meet up and train with who have a similar approach to training that I do - that would be great!

LOL I have dog training on Wednesday nights! Will have to watch it online

Or a Gentle Leader? Gentle? Certainly not names descriptive of what they do. Good point, Staranais. Yes I've always thought the name Gentle Leader was not a particularly accurate description.

Thanks, Huski. But was it the "Pro-K9 Hot Tips" (I want to change the name of that) Facebook page, or my other one? I have a feeling I didn't hit the "publish" button for the "Hot Tips" page. Gotta go check that. Oh I didn't realise there was more than one! I joined this one; http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Pro-K...08280663?ref=ts I couldn't find the Hot Tips one? -
I call them check chains because IMO 'choke chain', as Erny said, does not accurately describe what the tool does or how it should be used.

I taught my friend to teach this to her two dogs. It was when I was dogless and I wanted to use my friend's dogs as demo dogs for one of the Casey Microchipping Day events. It worked really well and wasn't too difficult to teach, although I had to use a couple of small blocks of wood to 'knock' together, because we were demo'ing outdoors. Unfortunately her dogs came down with Canine Cough a day before the event, so we weren't able to demo at all. I have the steps of the trick written out on Pro-K9's "Hot Tips" Facebook page, which is linked through my website, if anyone wants to see it. Just don't mind the order of things I've written there so far. Facebook confuses me a little and I've realised in hind-sight I haven't set things out as best as they could be. Also, more tips etc. to be added. ..... sorry, I've forgotten myself and just realised the thread I was in. This is very off topic and I'll delete it if you think I should. Pardon me. Don't apologise Erny, I didn't realise you had a FB group, so this post was useful for me (I have become a fan ). -

Wow that really is quite arrogant. Why imply that a trainer who understands how to use aversives/corrections (of which you are one, IMO, if you are happy to use head collars or anti-pull harnesses) doesn't have as much knowledge about "positive methods" as a so called PP trainer? That the way they train doesn't take as much skill and knowledge as the way a PP trainer trains? What a load of crap. Why do you think that just because a trainer has learned about all four quadrants and is prepared to use a range of methods that they therefore don't strive to learn as much as they can about ALL aspects of dog training, especially positive methods? That because they might find occasions however rare where a problem cannot be solved best by using positive reinforcement they therefore don't have as much knowledge on how to use P+ as a strictly PP trainer? Why do you assume that those trainers don't dedicate a hell of a lot of time learning about how to train dogs with "positive methods"? -
Well done TSD

Depends where you are coming from - I work in Spring Hill and Whereis reckons it will be about 25 minutes - that's not accounting for Peak hour traffic though. If I am coming from my house it will add another ten or so minutes on. Just gotta decide if I am going to go straight from work or if I would go home first.

I don't have a problem with the use of those tools, if and when appropriate, but the idea that they aren't aversive or are more positive or less harsh than a check chain (for example). -
I've got no advice Sas as getting Daisy to have better back end awareness is something I am working on at the moment, I just wanted to say that I am envious of Dante's ability to swing his backend in! Daisy is really bad at this!

I don't know how anyone could claim a head collar or anti pull harness are not aversive, they have to be, otherwise they wouldn't work. I personally don't see them as any different to using a prong or a check chain or a martingale or e-collar or any other correctional tool.
