  1. Hi everyone, I thought I'd pop this in General rather than just in the training forum so more people could see it. For those of you who haven't seen it, there was an article run in the Sunday Mail newspaper here in QLD a few days ago: http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/dog-lovers-call-for-ban-on-cruel-torture-collars-used-by-raaf-and-others/story-e6freoof-1226105028956 A QLD dog trainer is trying to get prong collars banned here in Australia, despite the fact there is no evidence supporting the claims she is making about the tool. We've created a Facebook page in order to have a place to bust the myths about prong collars and have everyone share pics and stories of how beneficial the tool can be when it's used properly. Even if you don't use prong collars yourself (I don't use them on my dogs) the bigger picture is preventing what happened in Victoria from happening anywhere else. We can't allow the RSPCA and a group of vocal, anti-prong collar people to ban a tool when there is no evidence that the tool actually causes harm. So if you'd like to get on board and support the use of prong collars, head over here and like the page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stop-the-Hysteria-Support-the-Use-of-Prong-Collars-in-Australia/256063094421315
  2. Daisy is the first dog I've ever really trained (Mish was easy as in many ways and he's got great house manners and basic obedience) and, well, two words really sum it up: evil beagle
  3. The thrill of lighting fires. LOL it is a bit distracting!
  4. There is no quick answer to your question, it really depends on her temperament and drive, and what you want to achieve with her. Think about what her favourite reward is, what switches her on the most? Food, tug/toys, praise? Whereabouts are you based - it may be worth seeing if there is a reputable trainer in your area that you can have a consult with to give you some guidance.
  5. wine yes, no bubbles though! LOL OI! Technically there WERE bubbles! :p
  6. K9 Pro have super large crates http://www.k9pro.com.au/categories/Crates/
  7. You know the funny thing is that Daisy my beagle is what I would describe is a dog of moderate drive at best, though she's a relatively hard dog nerve wise, I used to think that after living with her all I wanted for my next dog was a dog with low drive who was naturally calm and low energy. Then I started dog sports and now I want the complete opposite and Daisy doesn't have anywhere near the drive I want! Even (especially!) a super high drive working line dog can be taught to have an off switch. I think the way you train them comes into this too - the dog needs to know that you will be able to satisfy their drive in training so that they can relax at other times. I am finding this is important even with Daisy who is not a high drive dog. My priorities have definitely changed now and I'd be miserable with a 'couch potato' dog
  8. Very true Gayle! There have been a couple of breeds I admired on paper but in reality weren't enamoured with once I met some in person. ESS on the other hand...
  9. TSD seeing a video of little Em was what made me first look seriously into the breed Simply amazing dogs and I can't wait to have one
  10. With my Siberian it was a breed that appealed to us, they just have an 'air' to them IMO, I find them so naturally likeable. With my beagle we wanted a dog that would keep up with Mish but was smaller. I got more than I bargained for though My next dog will be a working line English Springer, it has taken me a long time to decide on my next breed but WL ESS tick every box I have - size, temperament, coat, drive etc
  11. Contact Steve from K9 Pro - he helps a lot of people with dangerous dog declarations etc as well as doing behavior modification with aggressive/fearful dogs. There's a section on the website about DD declarations too - http://www.k9pro.com.au/news/2/Dangerous-Dog-Declaration%3F.html
  12. No no that's cool, I didn't think you were, just curious as I thought you might of meant that you didn't want to do it as it involved heelwork as it doesn't. But I get what you were saying now! No, definitely makes sense I'm going back to basics with SB too (doubt we'll ever get to UD I just like training scent exercises) as I want Daisy to actively track too, will be interesting to see how we go.
  13. Seita's method doesn't involve any heelwork, but what was the reason for you not wanting to teach her to track? (sorry I only briefly read through the last few pages - lots to catch up on!)
  14. Love the last two Shell! LOL! Look at her fat neck in the first pic, hehehe
  15. Great looking dogs! Very impressive! I'm with Vickie. I'd love to see the average pet owner attempt to train a dog to this level of skill. If you had a dog with weaker nerves it would be near impossible.
  16. Thanks so much Shell!!!! They are awesome pics It's not an easy task to photograph Daisy, she's not a naturally 'happy' looking dog. Very Serious Beagle Is Serious!
  17. Having a dog that doesn't have a high value for other dogs or having a dog you don't let play with every dog it comes across is not the same as having a dog that is not well socialised. Socialisation is about far more than letting your dog play with others. I personally see no benefit in having a dog that has a high value for others, but each to their own.
  18. My dog can play with other dogs if I tell her she can but she very rarely has an interest in play with other dogs and that's the way I like it
  19. Maybe do some perch work to train better back end awareness?
  20. Are you sure it's not a k9 Pro leash? It looks exactly like the old range of standard leashes we used to sell years ago - I have one that is exactly the same from a few years back.
  21. BUMP - it's the last day of the giveaway today! We've got a mega pack up for grabs - a K9 Pro premium leather leash and collar set, a K9 Pro treat pouch, a tick key, a leather tug toy and a DOOG swim towel and a huck toy
  22. Sorry Trish, not sure what the problem is then
  23. Yes I am sure she will make the decision that is right for her Scarlett's advice is spot on
  24. Hey Trish Are you having trouble posting on FB or just on our fan page? Good luck Emery - only half an hour to go and we'll find out who the winner is! LOL D&R! Not long to go now! Good luck!
