  1. The cold frosty ones are definately easier to flick into the pooper scooper
  2. Hey Smash. It sounds to me like you have a typical case of "only child syndrome". Your pup has absolutely no respect for you and is getting away with being very naughty. You need to be really firm, assert some dominance over Indy and take back the control. I could tell you exactly what to do to stop the biting ritual but I would probably be flamed for doing so!
  3. Now 121. Words can't express the sorrow. In my thoughts Jed.
  4. Hey Jed. We have had two Malamute bitches bloat but cross fingers, none of our Sibes. I've done answers for both girls separately. ASPEN: What breed? ALASKAN MALAMUTE How old was the dog? 5 Was there a familial component? NO What was the dog being fed? Need some detail of what exactly - if dry food, which one, if raw, what it was I THINK IT WAS PEDIGREE PERFORMANCE. WAS BACK IN 2001 How often was she fed? Once daily or more? TWICE DAILY Was her bowl elevated, or on the ground? GROUND LEVEL What was she doing when she bloated? (ie, at a show, at home, playing, at home alone) AT HOME. ASPEN HAD JUST COME BACK FROM A VISIT TO THE CHIROPRACTOR AND BLOATED AFTER WE FED HER Has she bloated more than once? NO Has she had a gastrowhatsit? LOL (too lazy to look it up, but you'll know smile.gif ) YES Did she ever bloat after that? NO Did the dog also suffer GDV YES Did it have surgery? YES What was done to relieve the bloat? WHEN WE FIRST TOOK ASPEN TO THE VET THEY TUBED HER TO RELIEVE THE GAS. KEPT HER THERE FOR A FEW HOURS FOR OBSERVATION AND THEN WE BOUGHT HER HOME. I KNEW SHE WASN'T RIGHT AND KEPT SAYING TO THE VET THAT I THOUGHT SHE HAD GDV BUT WAS ASSURED THAT THE TUBE HAD GONE ALL THE WAY DOWN HER STOMACH. ABOUT TWO HOURS LATER, SHE WAS VERY UNSETTLED AND THEN STARTED ROLLING IN PAIN SO WE RUSHED HER TO VET AGAIN. THIS TIME, WE WATCHED THEM TUBE HER AND THE VET CALLED IN THE HEAD SURGEON. TOGETHER WE MADE THE DECISION TO OPERATE ON HER. NOT ONLY DID SHE HAVE GDV BUT HER SPLEEN HAD BEEN DISPLACED AND HAD STARTED TO DIE. ASPEN HAD ABOUT HALF OF HER BOWEL AND SPLEEN REMOVED AND ALSO HAD A GASTROPEXY PERFORMED. Did she ever bloat after that? NO. SHE WENT ON TO RACE IN OUR TEAM AGAIN STRONGER THAN EVER IN 2002 UNTIL SHE DIED IN 2004 FROM IMMUNE MEDIATED HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA PHOENIX: What breed? ALASKAN MALAMUTE How old was the dog? 6 Was there a familial component? NO What was the dog being fed? Need some detail of what exactly - if dry food, which one, if raw, what it was EITHER PEDIGREE PERFORMANCE OR EUKANUBA PREMIUM PERFORMANCE How often was she fed? Once daily or more? TWICE DAILY Was her bowl elevated, or on the ground? GROUND LEVEL What was she doing when she bloated? (ie, at a show, at home, playing, at home alone) RACING AT A SLED RACE IN VICTORIA Has she bloated more than once? NO Has she had a gastrowhatsit? LOL (too lazy to look it up, but you'll know smile.gif ) YES Did she ever bloat after that? NO Did the dog also suffer GDV NO Did it have surgery? YES What was done to relieve the bloat? THE RACE VET DID NOT BELIEVE US THAT SHE WAS BLOATING. I COULD TELL AS SOON AS SHE CROSSED THE FINISH LINE THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG. WE ARGUED WITH THIS IDIOT VET FOR HALF AN HOUR WHILE HE TOLD US THAT SHE HAD JUST DAMAGED HER BACK DURING HER RUN AND GAVE HER A PAIN KILLER. IN THE MEANTIME MY HUSBAND WAS HOLDING PHOENIX DOWN TO STOP HER FROM CROCODILE ROLLING WHICH OFTEN CAUSES GSD. SHE WAS IN EXTREME PAIN AND IN THE END I GOT THE PHONE NUMBER OF THE LOCAL GREYHOUND VET IN THE AREA AND HE AGREED TO OPEN UP HIS SURGERY AND WE MET HIM THERE. THIS WAS AT AROUND 10PM. THE GREYHOUND VET TOOK ONE LOOK AT HER AND PUT HER STRAIGHT UNDER. HE DIDN'T EVEN ATTEMPT TUBING AND STARTED THE OPERATION WHILE WE WERE THERE WITH HER AND THANKFULLY, SHE WAS JUST IN THE EARLY STAGES OF BLOAT. THE VET PRAISED MY HUSBAND FOR KEEPING PHOENIX FROM ROLLING AS SHE WOULD HAVE DONE MORE DAMAGE TO HERSELF. Did she ever bloat after that? NO. SHE WENT ON TO RACE AGAIN BUT IT CERTAINLY AGED HER QUICKLY. SHE IS NOW 11 YEARS OLD. BOTH OF THESE BITCHES GAVE THEIR ALL IN HARNESS. IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION, THEY WOULD GIVE US 110%. THEY LIVED FOR WORKING AND EVEN WHEN IN PAIN, THEY TRIED VERY HARD TO MASK IT. ASPEN WAS NOT HIGHLY STRUNG HOWEVER PHOENIX IN HER YOUNGER DAYS DEFINATELY WAS. SHE STILL IS IN FACT!
  5. We use straw in our dog kennels. I got sick and tired of picking up foam when the shredding monsters decided to trash their beds.
  6. Could well be as it doesn't matter which dogs I put together to feed, they just get on with it without harassing each other.
  7. Good point! Maybe because our guys live and work as a team the respect for each other is higher? One of our boys Jonty will walk away from his food and allow his son Roary to eat it. Is that his way of trying to secure that his offspring has a future in our pack? Roary is now 16 months old and Jonty will still leave food for him, however, we don't let him eat it. Makes you wonder doesn't it :D
  8. We have 10 dogs, 9 of which are entire males. All can be fed together in the same yard with little to no resource guarding. They know better than to annoy each other! Most mornings and nights I am the one to feed them by myself so I prefer to do that in their runs where they are two by two. I never have any issues and most will hoover their meal down and then go outside into the yard. Maybe we're just lucky with our guys I can also throw a cup or two of dry biscuits out into the yards for them to have a scavange hunt. It keeps them occupied for hours :D
  9. Hey Andisa. Thankyou for the compliments! Our scooters and rigs were made by a frame maker/welder who lives at Gundaroo. He makes recumbent bicycles and all sorts of weird and wonderful things so loves the challenge of getting something very strong, but also very light. There are a few people within the sledding community who also make them and there is a wide variety of frames out there. Glad you enjoyed the pictures
  10. We built our shed and runs specifically for our furkids. Have a look here http://www.idigadog.com.au/kennels.htm at some piccies that may give you some ideas
  11. Huh? I thought you had alaskans??? :D :D :p :p ;) @ nana She's a shite stirrer that one. Love it!
  12. Huh? I thought you had alaskans??? :D ;) Oops, sorry Nana. What was I thinking :p Yes, that's right, some people will argue the point that my Sibes are not Sibes! Damn their short coats and long legs :p
  13. I don't find my Sibes high maintenance - and I have 10 of them
  14. Honeybear, some people just aren't cut out to own a Sibe! Obviously they're not your dog of choice and that's cool, but don't go dishing the breed to those who love and adore them. It only gets people's backs up! I have owned Mals for nearly 14 years and Sibes for 6. What you are finding frustrating to deal with is a normal day in the park for me. No, I can't free-run my dogs but they do run in harness, what they were bred to do. We have massive running yards on our property so they can play and run around safely without fear of them escaping. When they are walked out of these areas, they are on-lead, it's just the way it is. I can understand when people are only used to having a 'normal' dog such as a labrador why they find it difficult to adjust to a Sibe. It is a completely different world and a Sibe is not a 'normal' dog but that is why they appeal to me
  15. You mean instead of letting him wander free all over the neighbourhood wherever he pleases? I do not agree with chaining dogs nor do I agree with dogs being aggressive. If this is the life of the Sibe you are looking after, then his owners shouldn't have him either!
  16. I have been following this thread and am so glad to hear that little Luki is doing much better. Fingers crossed now that he will soon find himself in a fantastic forever home where he will be loved and spoilt Whoever dumped him at the pound, and I'm guessing it was his 'breeder' should be strung up. Any idea K9angel where he came from and what breed he is? Maybe some Sibe in there but what else do you think? He's certainly a cute little fella
  17. Right now, Lance Mackey is less than 1 mile out from the finish of the Iditarod. Woo hoo!
  18. A couple of links to webcams at the finish line in Nome. Not long to go now as Lance Mackey is on his way to Golovin and then there are only two more checkpoints until the finish. http://www.visitnomealaska.com/nome-web-cam.html http://siteproxy.bssd.org/3/video.html
  19. Oh crap yeah!! Especially when you break your shoulder in the process
  20. That was only a short track. I think about 2.5 km's? Cooper usually sits on around 29/30km average speed and his top speed is close to 40. I'm hoping we can get some footage of all our guys racing this year including our bigger team. Then you'll see some power and speed! It's an adrenaline rush - even when you're crapping yourself!! Even after doing this for 13 years, I still have my moments of hesitation and feeling worried but you just have to trust that all the training you have put into the dogs will get you around the trail.
  21. He's probably been having a wow of a time with a swanky local wolf bitch So good that he's been reunited with his owner. I can't imagine what the poor guy was going through.
  22. Yeah, a skin coloured g-string by the look of it! Arrgghhhh, my eyes
  23. Just turn the sound down. No-one will know! It's not too bad really, he's just standing waiting to go at the start line and it's just "bark, bark, bark, bark, bark............". The dogs don't tend to howl when they are being count down, it's more likely they will yelp, bark or scream or some just stand in silence!! The chorus of howls is usually saved until they are all back together again on the stake-out line. Or for a 3am wake up call which some dogs tend to do at races - not mine I tell 'ya, they wouldn't dare
  24. Sorry, what? I can't hear you Yeah, it's pretty loud and I think my dog's make most of the noise too! When I'm handling for Andrew's 4 dog team, I actually have to watch for signals during the countdown because I can't hear a bloody thing! That video was probably of my boy Cooper. Our Mallie girl taught him how to scream at the line and now his pups do exactly the same thing - here he is from last year's SHCNSW race at Grabine.
