  1. A little better yesterday. She is settling with them. One pup (not the one she carries around) was a bit dehydrated when I got home so have started tube feeding it and gave it some fluids under the skin. Its looking much better this morning. Yesterday was terribly hot and I was home early. Cooler today but I have a full day at work so am going to take them with me. I can keep topping baby up during the day as well. Mum didnt like the cold pack (typical IG) but the baby did sit on it for a little while. The other babies didnt go near it either.
  2. Pups are definately not in a draft. Mum is quite settled all day until about 4pm when it gets hotter in the house. I have had this breed for 22 yrs and been breeding for 19. This is the first time I have had a bitch continue to carry the pups around longer than the first couple of hours. The set up is the same that I have used for the last 5 yrs since moving into this house. I have contacted a few other people with my breed including the sire's owner and they are at a loss except to also suggest it may be that she is getting a bit too hot in the afternoon. She appears to have a little more milk today. Will try the cold packs today and see if they help.
  3. Unfortunately no one that can puppysit. Everyone that I know that is familiar with the breed and lives close enough is also back at work. I can take her to work if necessary but think she is going to be more settled at home
  4. Thanks Alyosha. I will be home by 2pm at the latest but have to go out again about 5. Can see how she goes with the ice packs while I am home. Hopefully she will be more settled. IF she isnt I can take her in to work but think she will be a stresshead there as its a bit busy so dont want to take her unless absolutely necessary.
  5. Havent got a thermometer but I would guess it is between 27-30 max. BOM says current temp is 28 and its roughly the same inside as outside. In the moning it is noticably cooler inside the house but by around 4 the temp is about the same. She is drinking but has not had much milk the whole time. She looks like I could show her tomorrow she is so lacking. I have another bitch due Thurs who has had milk for 2 weeks and is just about dripping I was going to put the pups on her if necessary but so far they are gaining weight so havent yet. The pups are all sitting with mum, not spread out all over the box so I dont think they are uncomfortably hot. No noise from them either. No external heat source. Mum is happier now she has a second fan on. It is just that it is always the same pup ( there are 5 in the litter) Have cold packs I can put in for them tomorrow while at work. Will go and buy a chook now to make broth for her Edited spelling
  6. I have a bitch with 4 day old pups. At approx 4pm every day ( when it gets hotter in my house) she grabs one of her pups and holds him in her mouth. She doesnt hurt him but he does cry. I am pretty sure it is the same pup every time (there are two with almost identical markings). As soon as I go to her pen she immediately puts the pup down. She then settles and 15 mins later the same thing happens. This goes on for about 2 hrs. The first day she did this I turned a fan on for her and gave her some sandoz calcium. She settled but it did take a while. I read HERE that there has been success using injectable calcium. I have calcium glutonate. Is this the reccommended type of calcium ? Will this last any longer than the sandoz. I am returning to work tomorrow as is OH. I only have a half day at work tomorrow so will be home early to top her up with sandoz if necessary but after that she will be on her own. She doesnt touch any of the other 4 pups and in all other ways has been a fantastic mum. She also has very little milk but pups are putting on weight so it is obviously enough to go around for them.
  7. Thanks Indigirl I had no fleas until I moved into this house about 5 yrs ago. When we inspected the house there were no fleas but we didnt move in till a few weeks later and OMG, the fleas were horrendous. I made the landlord spray the house and yard after all kinds of threats which worked great, but now a few years on they are back. I was thinking 1:4 would be much better but it was just that the other list said 1:2 ( and some had said 1:1, 2:1 or even undiluted ;) )
  8. On another list I am on people have been saying that they have been using Confidor insecticide to treat fleas with great success for many years. It has the same active ingredient as Advantage at a fraction of the cost. They have reccommended the ditution rate of 1:2 as per the directions on the pack. However Confidor is 200g/l of Imidacloprid Advantage is 100g/l Dogs 25kg and over get 4ml advantage Dogs 4-10kg get 1ml advantage Is the 200g/l in confidor as a concentrate or once it is mixed at the suggested rate of 1:2 ? And if so how much would you put on a small dog ? OR would you dilute it 1:4 to get the same rate as advantage (assuming the 200g/l is the mixed rate) and use the same dosage as advantage ? I was never good at maths so hoping someone else can figure this out for me. I realize that the use of confidor is OFF LABEL for dogs, but with 30 odd dogs here and a major flea plague I am willing to give it a try. I bought them frontline spray last week and it has only lasted a week whereas last year it worked very well. I cannot afford to do them with frontline every week. I have also bought them coopex to treat the ground and kennels but have to wait till OH is home next week to give me a hand as there is 5acres to treat
  9. Congrats Trish, he looks lovely. Bet you are excited
  10. And all they do is grow and grow Im sure that the boy is twice as big as he was a week ago. His legs huge :D
  11. Now if YOU say it I believe it. I have made some VERY VERY good friends in the Sydney rings, but the majority of people are rude, inconsiderate and two faced. They are also extremely self centered and need to win at all costs. Why do you think I show out west so much ? and why I got the big greys ? I am extremely grateful to the person who first convinced me to go out west. She knew I had just about had enough of showing and was ready to give it away. I had such a fantastic time (thanks also Dubbo 3 day) that several years on I am still showing, although mainly with a different breed. I do still show my original breed but I very rarely ever show them in Sydney. I just checked the DOL pointscore. I did 36 shows this last year. Only 12 were in Sydney, and of those 2 were specialties and 1 was a breed specialist judge. For me Erskine Park is 30 mins and Castle Hill 20, but I prefer to drive several hours for a fun weekend away than an unpleasant weekend close to home.
  12. These are my two hopefuls. Both yet to be named.
  13. The nastiness in Sydney is just one of the reasons I rarely show in Sydney anymore. When I do its not with the toys.
  14. What is it with you and blood lately ??????? Jealous of all the redecorating the dogs have been doing and want to join in too
  15. Souffs link tells you what to do to make it not stiff, but I have no idea where to get the alcohol stuff although the neetsfoot oil is easy
  16. Thanks everyone. Think I will just dry it. The idea of curing one sounds good but the dogs are greyhound puppies so I dont expect its not going to last all that long anyway. I can see white rabbit fur snow is going to be spread everywhere very soon. A greyhound white Christmas Oh well, they will have fun
  17. Thanks heaps Have cut the head and legs off but otherwise it is one big round hollow piece so Im guessing that will work. How long do you have to hang it for ?
  18. My neighbour just gave me a meat rabbit which he just killed. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed eating the meat but I want to somehow preserve the pelt for them as a play toy but have no idea how to do it or if it is even possible in a normal backyard situation It is currently sitting in the dog fridge. Dont want to do anything toxic to it as the dogs are likely to injest some of the fur Hoping the DOL collective wisdom may know
  19. I have always done my Italian Greyhound puppies. Just had my first litter of greyhounds and got them done too. It is not normal to do racing greys but show greys are always done. Since it is not normally done to race greys I discussed it with my vet who is a greyhound specialist. Given the number of dogs that do rip them on the track he actually thought it was a brilliant idea to do them. Edit to add. My show greys also go to the track (although not entered in races as they cant be) and it has never affected their performance
  20. Glad the surgery all went well. Whenever the vets drained my boy it would always swell to unbelievable size within days. Seems to irritate it or something
  21. Yes, it is quite dangerous surgery as there are major arteries in the area. My old boy had both sides done many years ago. He had a tennis ball sized lump under his neck on a 5kg dog. One side was successful. A few years later the other side needed doing but was done by a different vet. Fast forward to last year and about 5 yrs after the second surgery and all has gone bad. For the past 18months he has had both sides swell repeatedly despite supposedly having all salivary glands removed. He is almost constantly on antibiotics and has twice had to have drains put back in his neck after they absessed and ruptured. Not good when he is now pushing 15 yrs. I have another dog (his daughter) whose neck swells on and off. I have opted not to have surgery on her unless absolutely essential. For me this is whne it is affecting either breathing or eating otherwise I just leave it alone.
  22. The sooner the better so puppy gets used to it
  23. Yes indeed I did - thank you  Had an awesome time - my bitch won puppy of breed and to top it off the taxi fare was $35.20 + $2.00 for something or other. Thank you to Bilbo Baggins and OH for the inside info ;) and direct instructions to keep me out of trouble. Very much appreciated Care to share the inside info ... please.... I am flying into Melb for the Royal tomorrow
  24. Yes I have them for my greyhound who has problems with her rear pasterns. I got them from NZ and found them extremely helpful. Emails and postage was very prompt. Think their website was backontrack.co.nz or somthing similar. Dont have a NZ journal handy at the moment. There is a back on track store in AU but they didnt have the hock staps. Also getting them from NZ Im almost certain they were alot cheaper too I got them because I have the coats for the greyhounds. Similar idea to the back on track ones but were made by a different company. They are fantastic after the dogs have been racing if they have sore muscles etc which is why I got the hock straps.
