When we were up north (Katherine, NT) the dogs were always outside when we were away. We had a large, cemented undercover area they could use and left the garage open with the fans on in there and never had a problem.

Wuffles, i adore Ava. I kinda have a thing for dogs with lots of white on their face though. lol

From what I've read they arn't specialised as a lot of herding breeds, they are designed to be all round, versatile farm dogs capable of moving and protecting livestock. I don't think that they arn't kennel club registered makes them any less of a purebred dog but I didn't know they wern't AKC registered.

What does it involve?

I'm loving this thread. When we started doing flyball with Mac she decided starting between your legs was the best way on her own. lol

I love photos of sighthounds in action. Awesome shots.

I hate days like that. My problem is that Buster wants to go anything that he see's so I hate the idea of getting stuck somewhere with noone to help me a brawl going on.

It can just take time. When we got Elliot after my cat Panda died it took me probably 6 months to feel like I loved him, we got him just 3 weeks after Pand died and I just don't think I could do it. My sisters dog I love, she's very cute and sweet but there is no connection there.

Help New Puppy, Dont Know What Im Doing, Advice Needed
B-Q replied to angelnkids's topic in Puppy Chat
Good on you for asking, you've go tthe pup now and your looking for advice so thats the best start. My family has always had dogs, we've always raised them from puppies. But Quinn is my first baby of my own and I've never had to do all teh hard yards that a puppy takes myself before and the first few weeks were HARD! I know she is a particularily active puppy but I was buggered the first few weeks. I'd go to bed, usually ahve to get up and take her out onleash at least once a night to toilet, standing in the cold and then she'd wake me up again at 5-6am and I'd have to pull mysefl up, carry her outside (she couldn't walk to the door and hold it) and get her to pee again and then take her in for breakfast, take her back out again to toilet and then play with her for atleast an hour so she wasn't doing zoomies in the house. I have one memory of Mum getting up one morning to get ready for work, I was already up and she found me cleaning up a puddle of pee in the back room, her exact words were "omg, you DO look like a new mum" It paid off, she's my little star and she's so easy now. She taught me a lot of things that we have never done when raising a puppy before and I will never raise a puppy without again. Crate: Its INVALUABLE. Somewhere to put her to eat and know she's not going to eat and then poo on the ground, somewhere for her to sleep and know she's not going to get up int eh middle of the night and chew on chords, somewhere for her to go when she's knackered. She genuinley likes it and chooses to sleep in it over my bed most nights. Puppy Preschool: Quinn's quiet shy by nature, her first night at preschool she hid under my chair the entire time. Each week she got a little more confident and in her last session she was doing zoomies with the other puppies. She wouldnt' have got the chance to meet so many friendly dogs without it, it helped her immensley. I had a good preschool, the shy or small puppies got time off when the big bouncy puppies were leashed and were free to be on laps/picked up when the bigger dogs were off. When they got too much for the other puppies preschool was over. Softer Training:I will admit when I was raised everything I was told about dog training was rougher than I like now, it was that you "have to make the dog do it" with the idea that if they didn't and "got away with it" they'd be disobediant. Quinn rarely has accidents inside now, she's super bright and a very happy puppy and she's rarely even heard a harsh word. The other dogs were housebroken using "rub their nose in it" I'm pretty disgusted to say and she never got that. Mum said once when she was really frustrated she smacked her gently and Quinn went to pieces for days, she's too soft for it and I'm so glad I know now what I do otherwise I could have done a lot of damage with her. Be patient, puppies are babies and if dogs arn't doing what we asked we eithr havn't explained it well enough or not given them a good enough reason to do it. Quinn's 5 months now and I'm starting to prepare to brace myself for her teenager stage. -
I've loved the look of both those breeds, particularily Bracco's for a while now. But I don't know much about their temperments though, care to share Monah? You have a spinone don't you?

Hope your pups well soon. We;ve got 2 mares here and the 4 dogs. harry's scared of them because Malibu thinks its a fun game to chase the dogs, he doesn't appreciate it. Buster's the only one that seems to actually get the game. Malibu chases him, he jumps out of the way and if he stops, she stops and look sat him like "are you going to run?"generally they are pretty good with each other, we don't force them to get in close with each other and if I don't want to watch Malibu (she's only 5 and can get random zoomies) I'll just closeoff one fo the paddocks and let the dogs out in there to watch them

Loose Lead Walking With A Clicker
B-Q replied to LoveMyLabEva's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I found this one quiet helpful, it makes sense to me and its how I'd prefer to train but I've been struggling with it. The classes I'm taking her to start us off with just luring them beside us for one step, then slowly work it up distance and sistration so I'm going with that now to see if she catches on faster, it seems to be easier to explain to her to stay beside me this way but I do wonder how easily it'll be to fade out the lure because she's so focussed ont eh food. -
Like my little monster? Thats not even fair. Glad you found the right dog, what breeder did you end up going to? I'd love to have BC's and kelpies mainly. I don't know which one next but seeing as my current baby isn't even 6 months yet, I have plenty of time to decide. lol But one day really want a malinois, greyhound, bullmastiff and maybe a borzoi. lol

This is probably worht looking at aswell, its about Aussies but it applies to all merles. http://www.lethalwhites.com/ I think Lethal White is generally a horse term but its used here.

I agree with LizT, add dogs slowly. We have 4 here currently. 2 males, 2 females. Males are desexed, females arn't but hopefully within a couple of years both will be. Buster is mine, he is an almost 8 year old kelpie mix. Mac is my sisters , she is an almost 5 year old kelpie/mini foxy mix. Harry is my mothers, he is a 4.5 year old ACD/BC Quinn is mine, she is a 5 month old BC. Buster and Quinn will come with me when I move out, our own dogs are our own responsibility. I buy dry food, my mother buys the meat, I pay my own vet bills, training fee's and train in my own way. Not interfering too much with each others dogs is what works for us.

There Are Still Some Awesome Vets Around!
B-Q replied to noisymina's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I love our vet. When we lost Sophie it was on a Sunday so we went to the E-Vet. Next time we had to go into our regular vet for something they said they'd heard and they were sorry. Its just nice when they make the extra effort to remember who you are and who your animals are. Another time when Buster had been very badly injured when he got attacked he was already at the vet before I got there, I ran into the waiting room and they recognised me and just pointed me straight towards the back where he was. I might have been a bit obvious, I came in covered in dirt (had been out with the horses) tears streaming down my face looking paniced but I just so appreciated that they let me go straight through before they put him under. My only problem atm is everytime I take Quinn in they want me to book her spey. She's geting chipped this week and I think I'll have to make it quiet clear I do not plan to BYB with her because of her pretty blue eye and she WILL be desexed, just when she's finished growing. -
