For a whippet and a non-human name I would choose something reflecting speed and/or agility - they are common with Saluki names. Things like: Turbo Speed Race Sprint Swift Pronto Pacer Rush Lancer etc etc

Importing A Dog From A Category 4 Country
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Hounder's topic in Breeders Community
I saw them do that and I asked them if they had an official source and didn't get a reply. Even if their sources are good, and who knows, maybe they have a mate in the Minister's Office, I would still hate to see people start planning on the basis of that date and it turn out not to be correct. I don't work for DAFF btw, but I am a public servant and know how this kind of thing can change overnight. -
Importing A Dog From A Category 4 Country
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Hounder's topic in Breeders Community
Really?! I've read it in print somewhere (as that date)! Which is disconcerting! Thanks for that, will go off in search. The only official comment about the timing can be found here (scroll to second last question), and it is careful to say that, if approved, transitional arrangements will take time: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs/policy-review-of-the-importation-of-dogs,-cats-and-their-semen--faq I have heard all sorts of things from people in dog world, both involved in pet transport and otherwise, but until DAFF and/or Senator Ludwig make an announcement, I think it's wise to assume current provisions apply. -
I take pure bred dogs and sighthound dignity very seriously and would never take a photo like that. Mmm. Right.... probably wasn't your hat either! :D

Things Dog People Get Excited About
SkySoaringMagpie replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
When you have just walked a trailer load of dogs while away at a show and everyone has done their business (including #2!) and is settled down for the night. Also agree with others about the magic of a firm poo after an upset tummy. The end of a bitch's season. We are on the downhill run now, and there's nothing better than the day where the dogs FINALLY go "eh, meh, whatever" -

My OH is in one photo, largely because the judge's hand also is and I wanted that much of the picture in because it shows along with her tail placement that she's not skitzy or freaky, which is an issue for our breed. Profile here: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=34716 I'm in another moving one for one of my males, and the picture of the dog only makes sense with the human in it as well. Profile here: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=53877 I defy anyone to recognise me from this last profile, especially as that ugly skirt went to Vinnies a while ago http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=22752 People must really think that judges are fickle and dopey. If that were the case, why would we pay our money weekend after weekend to get their opinions? Yes some corrupt and "safe" stuff does go on but snipping out pictures of handlers won't stop that. In some ways, it will advantage those who are already well known in dog world and disadvantage those that are not.

I'm guessing that's his "show stack" ?? How did you guess? Yep, lineup for Open dog at a Specialty and Baloo sat and wouldn't move an inch. Poor Mick didn't know what to do with him. I note the amused "You can't make me, silly human" look on Baloo's face. :D EFP

Nothing makes me do shifty eyes quicker than someone commenting on how well behaved my dogs are.

Like keisha09 I'm sorry to hear about the cruciate damage but the image of the diving treat thief is hilarious.

Looking for bitches in all directions more like!
-
So, the experienced dog people have all had moments where we look back and think "hmm, not so smooth/smart". Thought we could have a re-run of a thread that HW started a few years ago. The thread that shows even the experienced have their less skilful moments. Pictures or stories, please keep it light and don't post things that are actually negligent or cruel. So, I'll start. Here's me, volunteer obedience instructor, walking my dogs at a show last weekend. We have a bitch in season at the moment and one of my dogs also marked a gazebo while I wasn't looking. Before the show people come after me, it was our gazebo  :D

Puppies Raised Outside By Breeder
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Dree's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree that inside and outside can both be sub-optimal or fine. However, if I were after a primarily indoors companion I would be concerned about toilet training and whether the breeders' dogs had ever been observed living inside as family pets. There's a lot you can deal with more easily in kennels that you can't manage anywhere near as easily inside a normal family home. EFS -

Is This Common In The Show Scene?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to LisaCC's topic in General Dog Discussion
There is certainly a lot of bitching, but I think usually officials keep it clean with newbies. At least, in my experience most do. -
Is This Common In The Show Scene?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to LisaCC's topic in General Dog Discussion
Like anything where events are run and staffed by volunteers, sometimes you get people who are not necessarily a good fit for public contact positions or people who might do better if they read their guidance material (we are all required under our membership rules to "play nice"). Dogs shows are not unique in this respect tho' - you'll find bitching everywhere in life. From my observation both behind and in front of the desk, this sort of thing from an official to someone they don't know personally is unusual. Most people who get an inquiry about pups of a certain breed from the GP will either direct you to DOL, direct you to the official phone number for the canine control who will direct people to breeders, or direct you to someone on the grounds who they think might be helpful. Most people keep quiet about people they wouldn't recommend when speaking to someone they don't know because the rules require us not to bag out other breeders/exhibitors. I don't recommend people go to dog shows "cold" to find breeders as a general rule for a range of reasons UNLESS they have someone with them who knows who is who in the zoo and can guide them. Even then you might be missing the right breeder for you because they are not showing in your area or they are not showing because they have a litter on the ground etc etc. -
Puppy Peed On Couch, Now Thinks Its A Potty :(
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Everlilly's topic in Puppy Chat
Is he otherwise totally reliable with toilet training? No accidents anywhere else? The couch probably smells like you and your partner. Try Googling for dogs who pee on their humans' beds. That might give you a few ideas about what is going on, but ultimately you are going to have to ensure through management that he doesn't get the opportunity to do it again. This is a situation in which crate training would be useful when you need to leave him unsupervised. Importing From Nz Into Melbourne
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Zensu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Disclaimer - if you're importing anything you should rely on advice direct from Customs in the links I have provided and/or your professional advisor. OK, disclaimer out of the way, as Zensu found out, a dog is treated as any other kind of "goods" and is subject to assessment for GST if it has a value of $1,000 or more. If the value of the dog is $1,000 or more then the assessment for GST is done on the Value of Taxable Importation (VOTI) which comprises the value of the goods, the transport, the insurance and any duty - in the case of dogs there is no import duty. See information here: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp#Duty Gifts are still subject to an assessment for duty and GST if the value is $1,000 or more. See information here: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5653.asp#Giftssenttoyou Dogs that are the personal effects of arriving persons (i.e. pets) may be imported as a non-taxable importation irrespective of their value. The concession is meant for people arriving to live here who are importing their household effects. To qualify, the dog must have been personally owned by the arriving person for 12 months or more prior to importation. There are also other requirements to qualify as a person who can use this concession. See factsheet here: http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/SendingYourPersonalBelongingsToAustraliaAsCargoOrByInternationalMail.pdf If the dog is $1,000 or more and being imported on a temporary basis (ie you know it will subsequently be exported again), I would seek advice as different arrangements for taxation may apply. Importing From Nz Into Melbourne
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Zensu's topic in General Dog Discussion
GST is administered by Customs at the border. Phone 1300 363 263 and ask them. I have to say, this is a new one to me, I would check with Customs/ATO directly and make sure you're not being scammed. -
It might not be so good for big gobs of it, but I had smudges on a short coated dog and it worked quickly. I just combed out the residue with a flea comb. I used it on a bigger bit of it on our Afghan's saddle, which needs some work anyway. That took longer, so perhaps something that is purpose made would be necessary to dissolve a big chunk of it. EFS
