People's Prejudice Against Dog Breeders.
SkySoaringMagpie replied to asal's topic in General Dog Discussion
Pondering this overnight I think that it also depends on the breed. Some place quite easily, others don't. Some face a lot of BYB competition, others don't. Some breeders screen more rigorously because they have to check a wider variety of criteria to assess whether the home is suitable. In some breeds the impact of taking a dog back into the breeders pack is much higher than in others. Ultimately tho I think you have to arrange your breeding program to account for all this. -

Also agree with Aussie3, like the adopt don't shop BS the focus on breeders alone misses the responsibility of owners. -

I think there is some excuse making in this thread. Perhaps if instead of saying 'take back' we said 'take responsibility for?' I agree that sometimes they can't come back into the breeders premises right that instant but a breeder can negotiate for the dog to be directly rehomed to another home, kennelled or taken by someone else in their network until a home is found. Certainly the breeder should be doing the 'stop them bouncing' work that our breed rescue often does by providing advice about how to manage things so the person can keep the dog. Yes other breeders apply stupid standards sometimes as a form of harassment but also I see people not really making an effort. -

I do keep a shit list. Most recent was wanting to rehome an 11 year old because they couldn't find kennel space over Christmas. I know a lot of people do that, but actually saying it was a new one. -

This is why we need a single national body. When I applied for my prefix a couple of years ago in NSW I had to complete an open book exam covering things like dog laws, breeding, whelping, good husbandry, etc. -
Urine Free used to be the distributer in Oz for Urine Off, but they parted ways and I guess the Urine Free people found out the recipe. I have used both, and have not noticed any difference between the two products.

I wouldn't argue the point actually. I'd just say that is how it is, and if they can't be gracious about it, here is the name of a hotel, and here is the name of a local restaurant that does Christmas Lunch. In short, you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. They have a strong preference, so they will need to adjust themselves around that preference while visiting you, just as you would not expect to take your dog inside with you while visiting them. Some information, but like I say, a dog house to a non-dog person can be difficult to be in and I think they should make alternative arrangements. http://www.petside.com/article/health-benefits-dog-ownership -
Yes. It's not always the owner that is behind it. I also think that because there is a set against euthanasia in society, people don't really consider it as an option or don't feel capable of doing it. For a lot of these oldies it would be less disruptive and kinder on them to call the vet and have them PTS at home.

Germany To Ban Sex With Animals: Report
SkySoaringMagpie replied to MelodysMum's topic in In The News
Diva you might be thinking of the scandal with the league player in the ACT who got drunk on Mad Monday celebrations and was photographed with a dog? I believe the issue was that there was nothing he could be charged with in the ACT as no cruelty had occurred. Going from memory here as I'm also not keen to Google but I think the ACT Legislative Assembly amended the law. -
Hope we can stop this from being a judgemental thread, but I'm interested in people's personal guidelines about temperature and how high it has to be for you to pull the pin. Can you say what breed you're showing, and if it's different for different breeds you show. Or if it's more to do with your comfort than how well the dog will cope with it. Also, what cooling equipment do you routinely use. So I'll start off, I have Salukis and they cope well in the heat, but I don't! So I will generally bail on a show that is going to be mid 30's or above but that is more to do with me than them. I will also consider what I know about the grounds. If there is plenty of tree shade I am more likely to go in hot weather than if it's a football oval baking in the sun. In our show kit are crate fans, silver shade and a water spray bottle for misting.

Shame they didn't follow that to its logical conclusion, that is, you are a deficient human being if you try to establish a sexual relationship with a being that is far less empowered than you are (an animal, a child, a mentally disabled adult, etc). I don't know how long it's going to take some people to wake up to that, I have nothing but contempt for people who won't engage in sexual/romantic relationships with equals (ie, other freely consenting competent adults). -

This is one way to frame it, but we should bear in mind that animals don't consent to most things we do with them - they don't consent to obedience school, eating Royal Canin instead of Eaglepack, sleeping in the lounge instead of the bedroom etc etc. The reason it is wrong is because it's wrong to take advantage of a situation where you have power over a less powerful sentient being who could be damaged by predatory behaviour - be it an animal, a child, a mentally disabled adult, etc. Plus it's just disgusting. -
http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/stray-bullet-shooting-no-more-jail-time-for-two-men-20121129-2ai6s.html Two Sydney men involved in the 2009 "stray-bullet" shooting of Sydney truck driver Bob Knight will not spend another day in jail over the crime, after a judge gave one a suspended sentence and the other a sentence equal to time already served. Tarek Elbadar and Moustafa Mariam were among five young men from south-west Sydney who initially faced murder charges for their role in the shoot-out between two gangs. Justice Latham noted that the 34-year-old suffered from Tourette syndrome. The confrontation was sparked by a verbal spat between two youths at a shopping centre. During the course of a violent confrontation in the car park of a KFC chain in Milperra, a stray bullet flew into a busy roadway and killed Mr Knight as he sat in the cabin of his truck. Neither Elbadar nor Mariam were tried over their involvement in the crime, with prosecutors accepting guilty pleas on the less serious charge of affray. Both men spent time in jail over the incident, but were since placed on bail. In the NSW Supreme Court, Justice Megan Latham handed down sentences that meant neither man will spend another day in prison. Elbadar, whose crimes included lying to the NSW Crime Commission about what had happened in a bid to protect his friends, was given a two-year suspended sentence and placed on a good behaviour bond, after Justice Latham found that his role in the shoot-out was limited to assisting others. "The offender removed himself as soon as it became clear that guns were going to be used," she said of the June 25 confrontation. "It appears clear that he was shocked by this level of violence." Elbadar also alerted authorities to the fact that a number of those involved in the shooting had been injured. Justice Latham noted that the 34-year-old suffered from Tourette syndrome that resulted in feelings of shame and sadness, making him more compliant and susceptible to peer pressure. Mariam had also played a lesser role in the 2009 fight than some of his fellow gang members, Justice Latham found. "He was meant to stay in the car," she said. "But he knew there was a risk of grave violence occurring." Mariam was now suffering from stomach problems and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his involvement in the crime and had shown a degree of remorse for his actions. Earlier this year, the man who fired the fatal shot, Mahmoud Mariam, was sentenced to at least five years and nine months' jail for manslaughter.

Rescue Dogs - Clues To Their Lives Before You.

I rescue, but I have to say that rescue is a vehicle for a lot of human issues that are worrisome, particularly the need to feel more superior than others. -

Breed Books - Best Of The Best?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Salukifan's topic in General Dog Discussion
The two "bibles" for Salukis are out of print and crazily expensive. They are Vera Watkins "Saluki:Companion of Kings" and Hope Waters' "The Saluki in Art, History and Sport". I would definitely make the investment if a serious student of the breed but neither are easily accessible. For someone new to Salukis but familiar with dog world and wanting to find out more I'd recommend "The Complete Saluki" by Diana and Ken Allen, you can get copies of it quite reasonably priced. IMO all sighthound owners should also read Constance Miller's "Gazehounds: The Search for Truth" -

Unfortunately Oz Grooming World has been out of stock of the Aeolus pens for ages. We ended up buying one from Vebopet. So far so good, seems solid and they shipped it quickly - main negative is that it's heavier than the equivalent c-crates version.

Agree with the other posters. I would not purchase a puppy as a companion if I knew the sire's temperament was very poor. While the bitch has a broader impact because she raises the pups, and sometimes the combination works despite everything, the sire can still hand down things like spookiness and aggression. Also, with many breeds you don't really get the full picture of their temperament until they mature into adults. I see people with some breeds (mostly hounds, terriers and utility) chatter happily about how their puppy has GREAT temperament and then 14 months later its adult characteristics are coming through unmanaged and they end up with a mess (hounds ignoring everything their owner says, breeds with a historical background in dog fighting "suddenly" getting aggressive with other dogs etc etc). So in your shoes, if temperament is a big ticket issue, I might be inclined to go for an adult.

Interesting that she has that choice, I thought most councils would have the power to seize and destroy in that sort of situation?
