Oh Beauie that is so sad. Condolences to his friends and family.

I can't speak for the others but think these dogs should be placed on the limit register. If the seller has made false representations it's a civil matter. It's not up to DogsVic to try and make it better and they should never have tried in the first place. Letting it get this far has made it much harder for them to deal with than if they'd bitten the bullet way back when it first arose. Along with DNA testing I suggest they put a disclaimer on registration papers saying that if it is discovered that the pedigree has been registered on the basis of false information supplied by the breeder/s, the main register status may be withdrawn.

What is the purpose of the record?

Agree with kinsella. Furthermore, plenty of people have to pull dogs from programs all the time, for all sorts of reasons, including expensive high investment dogs. Why are the owners of these dogs so special that they shouldn't have to start again after a disappointment like the rest of us? We all know who the real criminal is here, and they got sucked in. They're not special in that respect. My breed went through something similar in the UK about 5 years ago. It wasn't stopped at the registry, and while yes, those established in the breed know which ones are from where, and will make decisions accordingly, new people haven't a hope. That argument goes nowhere anyway, if you want to say "everyone knows and will police it themselves" then why bother having a registry in the first place? The registry is there so that we can make good decisions about lines we don't already have in our heads.

What Would Your Friends And Family Do With Your Dogs?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
If I'm right, I think part of the question Alyosha is posing is whether you can be sure family (or friends) would PTS if that was your preference. I think there was a long running court case a few years ago where the breeder had wanted PTS but it went on and on and on because those left behind felt differently. Eventually her wishes prevailed in the sense that the dogs were PTS, but they spent a few years in limbo while it was being fought out which is certainly not what anyone would want. -
What Would Your Friends And Family Do With Your Dogs?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Alyosha's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's a hard one. My family all live in another state. OH's family all live in New Zealand. Perhaps that would mean local dog people would be called in first anyway. My parents are really not up to dealing with a situation like that, my father certainly isn't due to some severe health problems. Of my other immediate family, one person would be a risk for not carrying out wishes as set out and the other, while they would carry out my wishes, has no dog experience or training. Our dogs are also not "easy" for non-dog people. So in the "OH and I in a car hit by a semi" scenario, while the breeders would all make permanent arrangements for the dogs, the trick would be notifying them and facilitating their access to the dogs. My family would probably be relieved if I communicated to them that I don't wish them involved at all and nominated a contact person to facilitate return to breeders/rehoming. I should get off my butt and sort that out. -
He's a cattle dog isn't he? If so, it's a bummer, but I would show him anyway as he's not a coated breed and he is a working breed, so a bit of short fur should be way down on the list of priorities.

Too Many Chiefs Not Enough Indians?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to GeckoTree's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree very much with Diva here, and this applies not just to the people trying to make a buck out of it but in ordinary everyday pissing contests at dog clubs, dog events, and worst of all, online. OTOH, I also I think there is an earnest phase that many of us go through (and not just about training). The part of us that is upset by behavioural issues and where they can lead wants desperately to believe that there is some perfect method that if we could only sort it, would magically solve all the ills of dog world. And if we think we've found it, we can get a bit evangelical for the right reasons but with the wrong effect, until we inevitably come up against the dog that doesn't fit. When I run into novice evangelicals now I try to be patient with it, because that was me once. Don't claim I succeed tho', sometimes I still want to bang their heads together. Someone said early on to me to deal with the dog in front of you. I think that's a variation on what Jed's posted. -
Thought provoking thread, thanks everyone - especially Piper. That model provides a puzzle piece I'd been looking for but hadn't considered.

I have a terrible memory for names so I keep notes with the relevant pages of the catalogue in a folder. The notes aren't anything spectacular but I do make a note if I think they'd be good with babies (no matter what results we got) or if they were unreasonably rough (even if we won). If they seem have a specific "thing" I note that too (eg, heads, movement, presentation, etc) Not going under a judge again depends if you mean with a specific dog, or with any dog. Sometimes it's about the dog, sometimes its about the judge. If a judge clearly doesn't prefer the style of my dog, it's a bit of a waste of time entering that dog again but it might be smart to enter another dog. You have to hope you're improving over time :D

Stacking/standing Nightmare
SkySoaringMagpie replied to TheCheekyMonster's topic in General Dog Discussion
Don't stress. He might be older but if its his second show ever then give him, and you, a break. You perform better with a small amount of well managed stress, but if you go too far into stressville you will be sending a confusing stir fry of signals to your dog and he will start reacting. A lot of dogs that move about a lot are either uncomfortable (get a chiro) or confused (get an unbiased trainer to watch you both). The less you fiddle and fret, the better he will be. -
Dog Friendly Motel Or Similar
SkySoaringMagpie replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for letting me know it worked out TSD. -
If the breeder is blocking all avenues, I suppose I would put the question to them that way - ie, "each suggestion I've made you've not been keen on, what would you suggest I do?". I think you know the answer to your question already, otherwise you would not have written out that huge long list. You've got a hard decision in front of you and I think Bjelkier's suggestion is very sound - what will be the best decision for the path you want to travel?

Dog Friendly Motel Or Similar
SkySoaringMagpie replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in General Dog Discussion
Jolly Swagman in Holbrook. Dogs can be inside the dog friendly rooms (mention when you book) in crates providing you are in the room as well. If not, you need to have them in the car. Grassed area to toilet them on lead, decent restaurant for a country motel. -

I so know what you mean. The worst is when you open the catalogue and see you have the bum runner behind you and the slow poke in front!! -
We'll look for the traditional entrance of you running from the carpark with Boris, brush in hand!

The thing I find disturbing about this is that they contacted the council in an effort to do the right thing. Was there any "out" which would have allowed them to rehome the dogs interstate or were they on a one way track as soon as they identified themselves? Given the explosion in dog regulation this should get everyone's attention, and from a compliance policy perspective, it's just sent a huge message about whether to try and work with regulators.

On the positive side, the forecast has crept into double digits since this morning. A balmy 10 degrees

I'm a relative late comer to showing - been showing for about 7 years - and that hound entry is how I remember hound entries being in this area when I first started. Nice to see tho' it would be nicer to see some more Salukis... Edit: Someone just pointed out the forecast to me, might be a day for staying home in front of the fire! http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/yass.shtml

Conformation Photos Needed- Any Breed
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree with Alyosha, it needs to be breed savvy. A dog that is seriously east west is a fault in any breed, but in my breed the feet turning out slightly in the front is not a fault. Often it's a matter of degree. To pick up Alyosha's point about racing fronts, I saw someone put up a picture of a Saluki with a Setter front on FB recently, and people commented on nice it was. It would have been nice if it were a Setter, but on a Saluki it's incorrect. Pat Hastings nailed most of this stuff in her book "Structure in Action: The Makings of a Durable Dog". -
I've got another one, the show soliloquy, delivered by the bore on the move who just happens to get to you, the unwilling audience, right before you're about to go into the ring.

I wouldn't. I would deal directly with the exhibitor. -
Afghans and IW outside without too much fuss given their breeds. The show Afghan may stay inside if it's forecast to blow rain sideways into the run which is covered but just has dog wire sides, but that kind of weather is rare. Salukis also outside, on secondhand pure wool blankets (mum works in an op shop) on their trampoline beds and in polar fleece coats/jammies. I used to use snuggle safes as well but they kept pulling them out and chewing them. My older Saluki girl is usually inside but I think it's important not to expect too much toilet wise from dogs. 4 hours while you have lunch with friends - fine. 10 hours for a standard work day is getting a bit much without access to the outdoors.

Practical Solutions To Problems
SkySoaringMagpie replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Probably depends a bit on the group. I think it makes sense in our group to move the Dachshunds together for example, and right behind the Dachshunds is often a Deerhound who will cover several Dachshund lengths in a single stride even if it's a slow mover. -

Just typed out a reply and then lost it. In NSW the steward does everything from assembly to the paperwork. They are often busy calling and writing while the dogs are going around. Also, wily competitors know their judges and stewards and they know who runs a tight ship and who will turn a blind eye. It may not be fair, but the one thing that is within the competitor's control is their own reaction to people trying to push them around.
