Lilli, could you elaborate on that more? From the outside looking in, it appears we care more for our dogs and as a result our dogs are better off. But our extra care is weakening our dogs over generations. So our dogs do not live as long, their nervous system and immune are not as strong. Even seemingly basic assistance like worming and inoculation has an effect over time. There are lots of things I see done in kazak that I would not do, but there are lots of things I wish we had. x 2

Can Imported Dogs To Oz Be Quarantined In Nz?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to heroeswit's topic in General Dog Discussion
This isn't uncommon in my experience, Australia has a bad rep re quarantine + the long flights. If you really want the lines, most people will import semen instead. -
Similar to Lowenhart, not unheard of in Salukis either but everything else has to be in place (health, fitness etc) and Salukis/Afghans are late maturing breeds. I agree with Lilli that I would also look back to see the breeding history of the bitches behind her. If there was a history of having to intervene/problems I definitely wouldn't.

Agree, very, very well done - especially when you consider how poorly the Council and the LDH reps performed.

First Time Foster Carer Of A Pharoah Hound!
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Carlo11's topic in General Dog Discussion
No re behaviourist. The only person I would recommend is Steve from k9Pro. Sighthounds in the wrong hands are a disaster. I will PM you the name of a breeder who I think might be able to give advice. -
Do Any Breeds Fit These Criteria?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
Cos, if you don't like RRs, there's no point getting one, but here's a clip with some footage of a RR doing a range of things: -
Do Any Breeds Fit These Criteria?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wouldn't rule them out because some are very drivey. I'd talk to Helen Mosslar from Kysaridge RRs. In addition to breeding RRs Helen is an agility and endurance test judge and successfully trials her RRs. -
Do Any Breeds Fit These Criteria?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Cosmolo's topic in General Dog Discussion
If a Ridgeback is not drivey enough (which is a bit odd, having seen Erny's boy), then maybe a well bred Dobe? I am discounting all the sighthounds because you want both solid build (rules out the hot weather tolerant like Ibizans) and hot weather tolerant (rules out the solid build like Wolfhounds) -
I think this post from a few years ago on DOL is the most sensible advice you can read on this subject: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/71657-when-snakes-attack/page__view__findpost__p__1176684

First Time Foster Carer Of A Pharoah Hound!
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Carlo11's topic in General Dog Discussion
A well socialised well bred Pharaoh is lovely. I handled one for a friend at a show a little while back. Her whole demeanour is "Hi! I'm awesome! Let me share my awesomeness with you today!" The iffy ones tho' do tend to be hard wired skittish. This is definitely a breed where you need to research the breeder you're getting one from and view their dogs, talk to other happy pet owners, etc You can live well with a sighthound with a touchier temperament (within limits) but they are a much harder prospect to rehome. As other have said, patience and ignoring them while making sure you and the whole house are calm, consistent and predictable will go a long way. Let him come to you, don't try and make him come to you. You need to be a centre of calm, reliable predictability with a firm but gentle approach to setting boundaries. Don't bend the rules because he's a needy dog, he needs the rules more because he needs to feel sure you have everything under control. If you have some cash to spare, the book "Only Angels" which is available from the Saluki Tree of LIfe Alliance (American National Saluki Rescue Org) is a very good introduction to training sighthounds. http://www.stolastore.com/onlyangelstrainingbook.html -
First Time Foster Carer Of A Pharoah Hound!
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Carlo11's topic in General Dog Discussion
PM Fiona Mills, she has been fostering pharaohs and pharaoh mixes recently. Also, pop into the Sighthound thread: http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/107387-sighthounds/page__st__5130 Edit - there is no breed rescue organisation and there is a known problem with at least one breeder breeding irresponsibly. This dog would not be the first fearful pharaoh with potential fear aggression to wind up in rescue this year and I don't know when we will see the last. It's real stuff. -
Who do you consider yourself accountable to for the care you provide your dogs? Who holds you accountable whether you like it or not? Do you consider you have the right to hold others accountable, and in what capacity do you do that?

This is a serious turn of events for Victorian dog owners, and doing a Godwin in your introductory post won't encourage productive discussion. Sad as it is, this is not the same as exterminating millions of people.
-
I haven't seen one but I had assumed it was warm enough and attacked the yards yesterday - took water bowls inside, cut back long grass, did a tip run etc. OP, it sounds like you are doing what you can. To be honest tho', my friends with pools in rural areas frequently find them in the pool. It's something that would make me think long and hard before putting a pool in.

There are a ton of breeders out there only too happy for pups to go to GLBT households for the reasons others have mentioned. In Dachies in NSW people here could even have recommended some breeders who are gay. People decide not to sell pups/cease communication for all sorts of reasons - some reasonable, some not. Just as we decide not to buy for all sorts of reasons - some reasonable, some not. At least in Dachies you have lots of choice and now you have little Alwyn.

Showing Breeds In Different Groups?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think clashes are like murphy's law, especially if you have a breed in the middle of a group. Someone mentioned Whippets, Whippets are one of the most competitive breeds. I'd probably steer clear of them and stick with Dachies if the idea is to encourage him with wins with something manageable in the Hound ring, bearing in mind that Dachies can be stubborn little monkeys. What about a Tentie? It's at least definitely right near the end of the Terrier Group. Or an Aussie at the start? -
“is It Time To Introduce A Spitz Group In Australia?”.
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Bjelkier's topic in General Dog Discussion
Re FCI, they have more varieties of Dachshund than we do. Here is their group system: http://www.fci.be/nomenclature.aspx I'm not sure we have the numbers to justify applying the FCI system here, tho' I do think that a spitz group sounds interesting. I think if you were going to add a group you'd have to absorb one just to keep the competition meaningful at group level, and I guess the obvious one to absorb is Non-Sporting. Most of the dogs there can fit well into other groups but I can't imagine actually doing it would be controversy free! -

Yeah, I haven't found a solution either. I have pre-printed forms for shows that are not available on OzEntries. You can get Windows emulators for Macs, but as this is the only thing I can't do apart from my Tax, I've not got around to dealing with it.

If you're in the ACT and these are the Ladies Shows, you will find the location of the terrier ring pasted up on the board outside the office. Terriers are Group 2. The President of DogsACT shows terriers, you could ask around the terrier ring for someone to introduce you to Simon Mills, I'm sure he would be happy to talk to you.

Hmm, that sounds good Rozzie, I might give them a call. Wonder if the gas and septic people would do the same. No brain today, obviously wouldn't work with more than one service provider unless we supplied the lock and key.
