Interesting News Out Of Crufts
The Spotted Devil replied to Sheridan's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think it's uncommon for the white of the eye to go slightly red when a dog (or human!) is very hot/tired. But this is about the eyelid dropping down (in a "v" shape) exposing the very sensitive conjunctiva to the elements. I understand that people feel strongly about breed standards but I also think it is important to acknowledge that parts of standards may have arisen because they appear to be important by association. I would like to hear an ophthalmologist's opinion on whether having excess skin around the eye reduces or increases the likelihood of injury. Similarly in the Dalmatian, whilst patching is a serious fault in the standard and pups were PTS in the past, we now understand that these dogs are significantly less likely to be deaf and it's a good thing to have them in your bloodline. The UK Kennel Club (I think?) now accepts small patches that aren't obvious. Same with LUA Dalmatians but we can't afford to wait 30 years for these changes to be pushed through. -

It's like the original Cocker and English Springer Spaniels. Small ones in the litter were Cockers and the larger ones were Springers! -

Thanks so much Hava! Enjoyed that very much. Great effort by the Aussie lass - congratulations! -
I watched the live stream of the first two rounds last night but staying awake for round 3 was never going to happen. I've searched everywhere for results but no luck thus far. I was hoping the Aussie lass at least made it through to the final 8 - she was very calm and I thought she did a super job with her swap dog.
-
Really? Nice - will have to watch the highlights!
-
Oh I'm sorry to hear that Look forward to more details when you're feeling better :) x
-
Jo I was trying to find results for international junior handlers as I saw the first 2 rounds only. Do you know what happened?
-
Thank DOG he's human!!!! Missed his BC run - just cant stay awake any longer. Hopefully there will be a good highlights video. The coverage has been so good Mr TSD insisted on increasing our wireless broadband monthly allowance!

OMG Did I just see THE Greg Derrett stuff his dog up??? Or is there another Greg Derrett lol

Then there are the dogs that turn up on your property in the middle of a hard day's work, sending your own dogs crazy. Own dogs crated for everyone's sanity. You catch the dogs, ring the number on the tag multiple times and finally someone answers. The owner is working, can't get there, says it happens all the time and suggests you let them find their own way home. You insist on them doing something. Wait for owner's partner to ring back who then finally turns up, collects one dog and leaves old, arthritic dog to find its own way home Own dogs still not impressed with dog in yard and are still crated. Ring owner multiple times with no success. Old dog eventually wanders home. Next time the dogs are going straight to the pound.

What Does Your Dally Diet Consist Of?
The Spotted Devil replied to TheCheekyMonster's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Have a look at the ingredients list - red meat (lamb from memory) and a few other things I wasn't fussed on (Brewers Yeast???) I'm sure my Springer would do fine on it but not what I'd choose for a Dally. I prefer to minimise risk if I can control it. As I said earlier I feed Artemis adult. It's really important to educate yourself - know the list of purine high foods and find something that suits you (price, convenience) and the dog. -

With regards to the Clumber breed standard I don't understand why you would want a dog to show 'haw' (= vet diagnosis of ectropian). Flushing and retrieving game in heavy cover - the eye needs to be protected. Can anyone enlighten me please? I admit I prefer working lines anyway but these are the ANKC descriptions of various spaniel eyes: ESS: Medium size, almond shaped, not prominent nor sunken, well set in (not showing haw), alert, kind expression. Dark hazel. Light eyes undesirable. Field: Wide open but almond shaped with tight lids showing no haw. Grave and gentle in expression. Dark hazel in colour. Cocker: Full, but not prominent. Dark brown or brown, never light, but in the case of liver, liver roan, and liver and white, dark hazel to harmonise with coat; with expression of intelligence and gentleness but wide awake, bright and merry; rims tight. Am Cocker: Eyeballs are round and full and look directly forward. The shape of the eye rims gives a slightly almond shaped appearance; the eye is not weak or goggled. The colour of the iris is dark brown and in general the darker the better. -

Absolutely. It also appeared that they were having more of a go at the judges for putting such a dog up. -

Is the ACCC worth a shot? -
Wow! You should have come for a holiday :D
-
You'd think Crufts would get the spelling of DalmatiAn correct on You Tube!!!!! Really love the BOB though. I like the highlights videos as I don't have time to watch everything.
-
I do like the variety pack....so far a Beagle, ACD, Dalmatian and field bred ESS. I would have another Dally (LUA preferably) and a house full of Springers. There's not another Spaniel breed I am quite so taken with. I'd love a working Irish Setter one day but that's a whole other head space I suspect

Even small amounts of liver, red meat etc can be risky - whilst we understand the basic genetics of Dally stones there are likely other less well understood factors. Not all vegetables are low purine either. It doesn't have to be complicated. Feed a decent dry food with only chicken (I wouldn't touch Black Hawk by the way) and add chicken frames or large pieces for chewing. I only feed mince as treats - even my cats eat whole chicken necks/wings or chunks of meat. Much better for teeth for a start! -
Thanks for the extra info. I find the bitches can be a little up and down in line with hormone fluctuations so keep that in mind too. Making the ring a fun place to be and taking deep breaths yourself are also good ideas. You could try the "Look at that" game - I have used it with really good (and pretty quick) success. Some links of explanation: http://clickerleash.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/look-at-that-a-counterintuitive-approach-to-dealing-with-reactive-dogs/ http://raisingk9.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/leslie-mcdevitts-look-at-that-game.html I'm really enjoying Leslie McDevitt's new book too: Control Unleashed®: The Puppy Program
