Absolutely agree with getting your puppy BAER tested before making any decisions.

Hey wuffles that's fantastic How good does that first qually feel!!!! Now you know she can do it! Ah, biker girl, a fine brag indeed And 2 UD passes in one day is just plain showing off Congratulations! Yes, very happy with my 2 devils...Zig was tugging after his runs as well as before which is a huge step. I really don't care how we go in Sydney just as long as they enjoy themselves as much as they did yesterday :)

Great stuff kathq and Coco Love the back story too - I can just picture her expression

Thanks caffy! Now don't you go training for the Nationals - and I won't walk courses  Then we'll come home with Quallies galore

Where did you find the reference? Do you ever think sometimes we are being "had"? Out of interest I called my father who is born in Malta and immigrated with his family as a teenager. He had never heard of them before, he thought I was talking about female dogs! And the Pharaoh Hound he says he has only ever seen in books. Sometimes I do wonder... Now that the dog genome has been mapped, it suggests very strongly that many of the so-called ancient breeds are phenotypically similar to past dogs but are not genetically related.

An overcast, drizzly day but nothing could dampen Zig's enthusiasm. He ran fantastically, whilst I concentrated on fixing my shoulder turns and rear crosses as well as mixing up his rewards - picked up 2 passes in Masters Agility and came 1st (Q) in Open Agility You could have knocked me over with a feather at presentations  as I never expect to beat the amazingly fast dogs at this level but evidently many of them bombed out. It was a tough distance challenge (for us) so I am thrilled to bits. The remainder of his runs were terrific - tipped the broad jump with a toe nail to miss out on a nice JDM qually and I got lost on his best run of the day to stuff him up on the easiest part of the course - after a long 5 jump lead out, difficult tunnel suck and tight turns which he nailed like an old hand Em ran in Open Agility and Jumping (minus the distance challenge) and did beautifully - lovely lead outs, weaves and contacts - just practice for both of us and I can't complain at all although it is hard handling a very green dog again. That's just about it for us in agility until our road trip to the Nationals

Looking For Doggie Educational Material
The Spotted Devil replied to lovemymutts's topic in General Dog Discussion
DPI Victoria have some good resources - if you have no luck googling it I will post a link later as I'm on my phone at the moment. -
When I was looking for a kennel I found them very upfront about whether they mixed dogs - clearly a lot of owners love it as it has almost become a marketing tool. For me - no way - with an entire male which most males take an instant dislike to and a very submissive Springer who hates being harassed, running with other dogs would be bad. I've found a kennel that I'm very happy with - dogs are in a very secure environment, are fed exactly as I ask, separated at feeding times, are rugged as necessary, come home clean and healthy and spend plenty of time in outside runs especially as I try to travel off peak. The staff are very up front with how the dogs behave and it's what I would expect in a novel environment - eg Springer is quiet and shy for a few days but eats like a horse. Dally is very friendly but eats really slowly.

RS - I have to put reminders in my calendar so I don't forget to enter trials....don't like hand delivering entries, it's a PITA  FHRP - we had a few of "your lot" come down on the weekend - it was great to meet them! -

Where'd those last 2 pop out from? I thought you said 9  That IS a big litter - poor lass! You will be very busy when they start getting mobile -
In addition to filler foods, food that has average protein levels and is low in fat/carb will make the dog feel more full and wil still allow weight loss. Some of the diet dry foods have quite low protein levels. I would also have the dog "working" for it's food as foraging can increase feelings of satiety.

I also buy mine here. Nikki is great to deal with! Yes she is! This thread has reminded me to place an order to pick up at this weekend's trial!

I buy mine from Aussie Agility - just google it and you should find it no problem. A number of the toys/tugs stock are the same brands as on Clean Run.

LOL TSD...we had a bit of that with a metal article in UD today. But pleased to say Snazz did a nice CDX round of 198 today to make up for it  Ptolomy is being quiet, but Scoota did a ripper UD round as did Beans in CDX. Oh well done caffy (and Ptolomy) Em doesn't mind metal too much. But she'll fly to the moon for fur or feather :D ETA: Our judge today reminded me at the presentation that we would have won if not for that but nothing could wipe the grin off my face. Winning is lovely but some of my favourite memories of trialling don't even involve quallies.

Well done RS and bx2 That's quite a weekend of results! Mrs RB - the long beach walk sounds divine! I could do with one of those (every day for 2 weeks ) after another sparrow's fart awakening this morning!!! Em followed up yesterday's jumping win with a ripper 4th place in retrieving today. She was 6 points behind the eventual winner and lost 5 points for putting the bird down before quickly picking it up and delivering to hand. Twice

Retrieving & Field Training Talk

Welcome to DOL Lesli with "Scout" from one ESS owner to another! I look forward to meeting you one day :) My young Em excelled herself this weekend. I couldn't get away for 2 days of retrieving so she made her debut in the Viszla Club's agility trial yesterday (miserably wet and cold) and came away with her first Q and 1st place in Novice Jumping. Then today I was up before 5am to make the retrieving trial site in Seymour. Fantastic property with plenty of water and a good selection of runs for dogs in all stakes. First run was a nicely sighted mark in moderate cover over undulating ground with a few ditches. Nice work between the pegs, very steady, straight out and straight back. She put the bird down on her way back but, with all the training this week, she picked it straight up again and delivered it to hand. She lost 5 points but I was really pleased as she was so much more confident about picking it up again instead of standing there looking confused - the penny is dropping! Second run was a bit more challenging. Again, the mark was nice and clear and landed the other side of a gully - evidently not a whole lot of water as even Em was only wet up to her shoulders. She went out nice and straight but got caught in the "trap" and ran the track home and I wasn't quick enough to handle her - she wasn't the only one! Delivery was perfect. Third run had me a bit concerned.....dogs could only see the top of the arc in clear sky. Average run to the water, swim across the water (which was filled with logs, debris etc) then a decent run on land with the bird landing down an embankment. I needn't have worried - The Springer Devil nailed it - ran hard, attacked the water entry, swam straight, ran hard right to the mark, picked it up, flew back and swam straight across without even thinking about cheating (for which there was lots of potential). She put the bird down, had a shake, picked it up and delivered to hand. Another 5 points BUT I was over the moon as I nearly have the delivery licked and her marking was really good. I spent the rest of the day gun stewarding for Restricted, spent a little time watching AA, did a hot blind with a bird (she ran straight and hard) and found a perfect muddy water hole to do anti-cheating training. Em ended up in 4th place on 151 points, only 6 points behind the winner. The judge took great delight at presentations in reminding me that if she hadn't dropped the birds she would have won :p He did say some lovely things about her too  I think we will both sleep very well tonight! -
Little Em made her jumping/agility debut today at the Viszla Club's Group 3 trial. She came away with her first qually and a first place in Novice Jumping :) The other run of note was Open Agility - as planned I didn't do the distance challenge but she ran beautifully. I probably did one too many runs with her as she completely lost concentration in the last (Open Jumping) round - I have spent a lot of time on contacts/weaves but haven't yet built enough value for jumping I suspect as she ran like a crazy thing afterwards for some retrieving training. An absolutely miserably wet and cold day for trialling but the Viszla Club should be complimented for running such a lovely, relaxed trial with really great prizes - a huge bag of Canidae dry food for class winners plus a very pretty rosette. 2nd and 3rd place also received smaller bags of food. Everyone pitched in to help, the judges set good, yet challenging, courses and much coffee was consumed to combat the shivering hands and soggy feet

sheena - sounds like there may be 2 Novice Rally rings? So two opportunities to get a Q. Like Novice Jumping A and B perhaps? If unsure, I would contact the trial secretary. ETA: You can enter her in CCD or CD aka Novice. Put simply, the former is on lead heeling and easier everything else...have a look at the rules here: http://www.ankc.org.au/Rules.aspx

Definitely another Dally.....but I think I could only cope with training/competing with one at a time for the moment  LOTS of working ESS. LOTS :D A working Irish Setter Possibly a working Golden Retriever if I found the right lines I have always loved Bernese Mountain Dogs and Poodles of all size but they don't really suit my lifestyle at the moment - Bernese are a bit heavy for agility and the Poodle clipping would drive me crazy! I also have a soft spot for Tibetan Terriers, having trained a bit with one in agility years ago.

Well done TO and Jovi Congrats on the win and title Kavik - great work!!! Masters Jumping is so much fun - you'll both be fine :D
-
Oh well done Esky - how much fun does that look Tassie - your dogs are on fire at the moment....congratulations Nice to see young Kenz out and about, Ness - you must be very pleased!!! We had our own mock trial today at the agility teams selection for the Nationals. I didn't partake in the teams tryouts but took the opportunity to run both dogs in the mock trial. Em hasn't trialled yet nor done a huge amount of sequencing so it was perfect timing. The jumping course was at an easy Excellent level and both dogs had a ball getting "clear" rounds. The agility run was definitely at Masters level - very long for Em and lots of surprises for her so she did really well although she did try to walk on TOP of the tunnel from the dog walk  Zig ran it beautifully apart from a few handler errors from me.
