  1. Just one thing from my perspective: if he stopped snarling and growling, I would prefer to REWARD that behaviour (with an enthusiastic "good boy!" and maybe a game on his own - whatever works for him) rather than effectively punish him with the water pistol. JMHO
  2. I had great fun meeting up with Lablover and her dogs yesterday.....how could you not love 'em What a delight to see such athletic dogs with endless enthusiasm for their job at hand! Between LL and her dogs, I managed to learn a good deal but will have another session on Friday which will hopefully give me a chance to refine my signals and improve my bond with the young dog I am working with. He was a very good boy for me......but much preferred to take the retrieve item back to LL if he could see her Zig had a good gallop around the park and was happy to snuggle into his bed last night, exhausted as he was from all the excitement
  3. If you haven't changed your mind, lets do it. Done Will PM you.
  4. I'd be interested but have less than no idea of what's involved
  5. This is a good point SD. Of necessity because of where it has happened I have had to RETURN to her. Just what she wants!!! So this is why I withdrew her. I don't want failures that indicate to her she gets me back if she breaks. Frustrating AAGH! It's a difficult one isn't it! I like to use a NRM, especially with sensitive dogs.....sounds bizarre but I was delighted when Zig, with great uncertainty, broke his down stay yesterday for the first time ever when I was training him. He likes to do the thinking for both of us! I just said "Oh well" (which he knows very well to mean that he's missed out on a reward ), walked back towards him but ignored him, passed him and kept on walking - no correction, no response at all. The look on his face was priceless He raced after me and did the most beautiful "glued to my side" heelwork in an attempt to earn his reward. I asked him to drop/stay and he just seemed so much more solid on the stay that time. Of course, he got a very high value reward after doing a lovely stay (praise + food!!). Good luck and be patient, Arya - hope to meet you at a trial one day
  6. Crikey, sas - you've got your work cut out with this one!!!! Thanks for the update....I was wondering how everything was going. Out of curiosity, apart from failing to clear up the skin issues, how did the vege diet go?
  7. What an enlightening thread Hope the end result is....um....well......what you're after
  8. Couldn't agree more Erny And by whose standards? My first dog was an ACD - by golly she was a brilliant dog and did really well despite the fact that I was a bad trainer with poor, 'old-fashioned' advice from an obedience club. However, she was a heck of a lot more relaxed when working with me than when she was left in the backyard bored out of her brain until the age of 2! From a welfare perspective, the research indicates that "inconsistent" handling gives a similar or higher stress response than "negative" handling i.e. randomly praising/punishing the same response.
  9. Oh fantastic Can't wait to see how she goes!!! Hmmm....fast and crazy.....now who does that remind me of... ...
  10. And to think I got to handle young Daisy when she was very new to this world Nice work Phillipa - she looks like she's having the best time :D Oh and the size of the ball kills me every time :D How's The Spotted Devil's sister shaping up? Ziggy is doing some lovely obedience work for me......still need to work on the distraction training a little though
  11. Oh bad luck dogdude!!!!! Maybe he was distracted by something outside the ring....?
  12. Oh, shoey - damn it - and capable of such beautiful work from what I saw last weekend!!!!!!
  13. Yay for Leo Any more results for those glued to the computer?
  14. Sounds like your girl has so much potential Arya! One question for you - what do you do when she breaks the stay?
  15. Whoo hoooooooooo!!!!! Well done! I've been hanging out waiting for results from today
  16. Amazing aren't they - I took Zig out for a training session this morning and "the heat" was killing him Gave up and came home early - will definitely be trialling him in winter! Good luck everyone tomorrow Not sure that I'll make it as I have a rather large essay to do for Uni.
  17. If puppy is still quite young, you've probably fallen for the "he has now learnt to use the catflap" trick Go back to taking him outside, wait until he toilets (teach a command at the same time), lots of praise and then bring him inside. It's probably much more comfortable for him to wee inside - no bad weather or scary noises
  18. I fed Advance to Zig for a bit - he did beautifully on it....the main reason I switched to Eagle Pack was for a low protein (20%), low purine dry food as Dals are prone to a peculiar type of urinary stone.
  19. Naughty PF Makes me want a poodle even more
  20. I was hanging out to start agility with Ziggy but you've made me want to start this weekend :p Can't wait to see Brock in action ;)
  21. Try taking in an Australian Shepherd puppy Maybe add them to the seperate group too Add the Dallies while you're at it
