If someone is breeding "for the betterment of the breed" they cant do that unless others who want to follow on or even themselves have a record which is accessible to anyone wanting to breed them .Which is why we have a registry. Coolie breeders register their dogs on the Coolie registry. They register their puppies so everyone coming behind knows which dogs were used and what they produced . You dont just go out and get any old dog and put it with another without a stated goal and plan of where you are going and what you hope to get from it. A breed in development is completely different to just grabbing two dogs and letting them have sex - anyone can do that but its what comes next in the next generations which determines the real success of what is being done. This is what determines someone who breeds purebreds or someone who is working on a breed in development from a cross bred breeder. A crossbred breeder is only interested in what they get for one generation - they need to be a little concerned with recessive genes in each of the dogs they are using but dont have to consider how those recessive genes or any others will impact further down the track because there is no further down the track . So in answer to the question if the person who is doing this is registering the dogs they are using and the pups which are being produced - working to system which will give them predictible dogs - that is dogs that are easily identified as being one of these dogs by the way they look , act and need to be managed and where health issues are noted, eliminated and managed then all power to them. But if they are just choosing any dog and putting it with any other dog then they are no different to anyone who cross breeds dogs where every single pup that is produced is different to every other. Where getting what you hope to get is based on luck and not science.

These foster carers are going to need supplies for several months so we really really need a hand if you could possibly help out.

We have need of dog food donations and or cash donations to help out a dogz member who's hubby has had a serious injury. This has caused her to be in temporary hardship and we have her dogs in foster care all over the place. Dog food donations are needed at Orange, Dubbo and Port Augusta but the carer also periodically travels to Dublin in SA where she can pick up if needed. We also need dog food donations around PYramid Hill in Victoria. I would also like to make mention of how wonderful several people have been who have put their hand up to take multiple dogs into care.

Oscars Law - ? Copy Of The Proposed Legislation
Steve replied to Miz J's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not a chance - its just some fanatics beating up a way to get donations. Why do you say that? I was going to attend the Adelaide rally but would like to know a bit more about their agenda, other than what's on their website. O.K. So when you attend the rally what is it exactly that you think you will be rallying against or for ? Puppy farmers? Commercial breeders? Any breeders ? Sales of puppies in pet shops or sales of puppy farmed dogs in pet shops? Or all sales of puppies on line, or only sales of puppies on line from puppy farmers, or sales of puppies in print media or only sales in print media from puppy farmers? Or are you rallying for more laws , with more power to the RSPCA to police them ? Tougher mandatory codes? Designer dog breeders or any breeder or designer dog breeder which is a puppy farm ? -
Im about to put them up in the Pacers fundraising section They do dogs and humans and the pouch clips on so you can take it on walks etc the instructions cover both dogs and us.

Yep they are out here. Kids are now walking around with snake bite kits on their belts and the yard is cleaned up with nothing down where they can ping out at me. Bit scarier this year as the mice have been hell though Im hoping they will have plenty of water and food which will prevent them coming here for lunch. In drought our property is the only place for a couple of kilometres they can get a drink - in the dogs water bowls. Im hoping this year the full dams and the puddles make our place less attractive but if I go too far from the house I also wear a snake bite kit on my belt and there is one in each car.

Double Digets For Puppies Expected In Next Litter
Steve replied to Tapua's topic in Breeders Community
Nup I wouldn't top them up at all .We always have a dozen or more pups in a Maremma litter and the bicthes do all the work without a top up. Topping them up means you are introducing other proteins and the more you top them up the less she makes. Its a supply and demand thing and Im against interupting nature any more than you need to. I believe it lowers their immune system. I do suppliment Mum with calf milk powder and loads of food and feed the pups with calf milk powder too when they are around 5 weeks to home time. The puppies see me coming now with a jug of warm milk and they love me Then they lay around in the sun happy and content - but they are 8 weeks old and had nothing but Mum until she told me it was time for them to share. -
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/its-no-longer-raining-cats-and-dogs/2273070.aspx It's no longer raining cats and dogs BY HENRIETTA COOK29 Aug, 2011 12:00 AMHigh-density living, frequent travel and long working hours have come at a cost to our furry friends. In the past decade Australia's dog population has decreased by at least 14per cent and its cat population has dropped by about 10 per cent. This steady decline in pet ownership has brought the $6.02billion industry to its knees and next month town planners, architects, vets and policymakers from across the country will travel to Sydney to discuss a course of action. The inaugural Putting Pets Back Into Our Lives think-tank event is being organised by the Australian Companion Animal Council, and president Kersti Seksel expects about 150 people to attend. ''The number of owned pets is decreasing and this is of great concern,'' she said. ''Animals improve the mental and physical health of people and they contribute to the economy.'' Dr Seksel said urban developments, rigid legislation and tricky landlords were responsible for declining pet numbers. ''We are living more and more in closely confined areas and some new developments don't allow pets. Renting with pets is difficult, as is moving into an aged-care facility with a pet. It can be traumatic for elderly people to be told they have to give their pets up.'' She said people needed to change their perception about living in apartments with pets. ''There's a mindset that if you move into an apartment you can't have a pet. But cats are really good urban pets and dogs can also work well in apartments as long as they are walked regularly.'' Pets are big business and in the ACT alone there are 196 businesses devoted to household animals. These include everything from catteries, kennels and breeders to pet cemeteries. There are more than 1.8 million cats and dogs living in homes in the ACT and NSW. Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association president David Neck said the veterinary industry had evolved over the past decade to ensure declining pet numbers didn't affect business. ''I do a lot less fire brigade work, I only saw one dog with a broken leg last year. We now do preventative health, dental care has skyrocketed. That will protect the industry for a long time. There are more clients requesting blood screenings and even genetic testing among dogs.'' He said lifestyle changes were responsible for the drop in pet ownership. ''People don't want to feel tied down to the one place, and don't stay in one job for a long time. Our working hours are changing. How many people work from 9 to 5 and then walk their dog at 5.30? It's really unfortunate because study after study shows how important pets are for our physical health.'' Emma Davey is bucking the trend and recently became the proud owner of Occa, a 13-week-old blue heeler with tan, black and grey markings. The 20-year-old student lives in a relatively small apartment in Curtin but ensures she walks her energetic puppy twice a day. ''You have to be sure you give it the attention, care and training he needs. I like the added responsibility, it's made our family grow, '' she said.

Puppy farmers ship pups at 35 days as a rule. That puts them in the pet shops at 5-6 weeks. Plenty of BYBs will let them go as soon as they're weaned also.

Im not even sure she is a member here but she sent through a pretty urgent call for help and the only contact I have is her email which has bounced so I cant contact her. The issue she has needs to be dealt with pretty quickly - its a lab in Canberra but nothing I can do without contact. I was just hoping someone here may have known her to tell her to ring me. Not much I can do until she does. Julie

My stud contracts are very clear - you pay for sex .If we see sex you pay - full stop. I know others think that s terrible and the stud dog owner should cover repeat matings if there is no pregnancy or if there is a small number of puppies but Ive been bitten enough and around long enough to take money for sex and if we decide on anything else its because Im a nice lady and not because its expected.
-
Whats the problem? She paid a stud fee and had the dog studded. She agrees they had sex. She wasnt paying money for a pregnancy or a puppy but for sex. She got that - should shut up.

Way way back many used to send puppies home at 6 weeks. Then the CCs bought in codes of ethics which said wait until 8 weeks to send them home to enable the vaccination at 6 weeks and 14 days to let it kick in.In fact I think some of them are still worded that way. The new vaccines dont need that long [ if the old ones ever did] Even though there is a maternal antibody issue it is very very rare for any pup which has been vaccinated to contract parvo which is in all honesty the only one Im really concerned about these days. I vaccinate Maremmas at 7 weeks because its not practical for them to stay here any longer because of their bonding and what they have been bred to do.Yet when I think it through the Maremmas are probably more at risk as they go into paddocks where there are wild dogs , dingoes and foxes hunting. I vaccinate Beagles at 9 weeks and they go home at 10 weeks. Fact is if something goes wrong the only thing anyone looks at is whether you followed the manufacterers instructions - that is the only thing that gets you off the hook. So working out what you want to do and changing their recommendations carries a risk - granted thats minimal.

My dogs have people coming and going all day every day.I operate businesses from my home, I have 8 kids and 13 grandkids and if I took the dogs for a walk they wouldnt see another human or another dog - in fact all they would be exposed to is snakes and other dangers which I have eliminated from our environment. We dont all own the same breeds, live the same lifestyles or live in built up suburban areas. Also one of my breeds is a Maremma which would rather never leave their own environment because they are bred to guard and part of that is knowing the potential threats and what is normal.

Look this is part of the huge problems associated with any form of dog ownership legislation. I have a friend who owns two little dogs,I dont have much idea of what breed or part thereof they are and they are 100% like their kids. They don't take em for walks they dont leave their back yard but they are the happiest, little dogs ever .my dogs dont leave their back yard but their back yard is 3 acres which is specifically designed to keep em busy and safe. You cant make laws and have expectations on people based on what you have , your lifestyle or what some idiot doesnt do. There are people who visit this forum who didnt buy their dogs in a pet shop or from a BYB or form someone giving them away and they know the laws and what to answer to get a licence and pass their entrance exam and they choose not to do what they are supposed to do.They argue and cannot ever see they are inthe wrong , that they make us all look bad and they cause people to scream for more laws against us all. Little old ladies who own a little dog and spoil it rotten dont need to be licensed and have rules and laws in place more suited to a mountain lion. Bloody hell having to do compulsory education to own a dog? Seriously can anyone really imagine it ever flying?

There are numerous working breed registries, there are numerous breed registries of breeds in development ,the MDBA has a registry, the AAPDB has a registry and many councils register their breeders.
