  1. A friend lost her mum this week..... Other friends lost their Affie Georgia on Monday and last night other friends lost their Newfie Nuff..... Hope they are all playing together at the bridge....
  2. Cartophen, Sasha's blend, Apple cider Vinegar - used together absolutely fabulous and without the potentially harmful sideeffects of Metacam or one of the other NSAID'S
  3. Recently I thought my old girl either had a lypoma or a haematoma on her butt - had the vet swab it just to be sure - turned out to be a Mast Cell Tumour - have the vet assay it asap....
  4. I use Advantage on the dogs and just heard of a product called Delete that is supposed to repel flies and fleas from surface areas... http://www.thecompetitiveedge.com.au/ I find once the dogs are Advantaged that there are no other fleas anywhere. Do you wash their bedding etc regularly? I would use whatever you intend to on the dogs then wash and disinfect their bedding and sleeping area at the same time. It might help.
  5. Nice in theory peibe BUT proving it's their dog that was the culprit could be interesting....they could argue "well if my dog got over the fence so could other dogs"......you would have to dna the dogs to know and I'm not sure the technology exists as yet.... Morning after pill is certainly an option and if you aren't planning to breed - a good option...but speying is the way to go....
  6. See - learn something new everyday - I didn't know that!! Thanks Winterpaws.
  7. I wasn't under the impression Advocate was supposed to have an impact on mange - only fleas/heart worm - who told you to use Advocate if I can ask?
  8. Is he on heartworm meds? I had a rescue GSD that came to me that exhibited similar symnptoms - he had chronic heart worm - I'd ask the vet to do a blood test perhaps....
  9. Ibite - I wash my dogs every week before shows - not true to say you CAN'T do it - you just can't do it with cheap, horrible shampoos and you must make accomodation in their diets. I give my guys sardines at least twice per week - the fish oils help stabilise their coats. Terrorbull - if you want some specific recommendations for shampoos then pm me.
  10. I can be under a doona and blanket and still shivering and mine will be panting....each dog is different and regulate themselves differently. If there are no signs of distress in the dog (ie falling over, fitting etc) then I wouldn't be too concerned.
  11. I find RC to be about the same price as Euk but dearer than PropPlan and much dearer than Advance...
  12. BM - i am not going to debate this with you :p you asked for opinions - you have mine - take it or leave it....it doesn't bother me...your dogs, your risks...do whatever you want to - I did.
  13. Yep - certainly you could walk it in BUT knowing I DID have it in the house left me no choice except to get rid of as much of it as possible hence the monumental spring clean. Certainly it's the reason we vaccinate....or at least most of us do......
  14. When I had a pup diagnosed with parvo I threw out all the clothing i was wearing when with him, threw out all his bedding, threw out car seat covers, threw out all carpeting in the house, disinfected EVERYTHING including the front yard - killed the grass off pouring very strong disinfectant on it...I took absolutely no chances. I have had varying opinions as to how long this virus can live in the ground....one very senior vet told me 80 years (yikes) so better to take NO chances.....
  15. I use RC for Giant Breeds and love it. Great food - the dogs like it and it produces little waste. Mine were all on Euk as pups before i became dissatisfied and changed them over so unsure about the puppy packs. But thoroughly recommend it for adults!!!!!
  16. I have friends with schnauzers and they hand strip...they use a small rock looking thing similar to a pumice stone and rub that across the fur to take it out. Doesn't hurt the dog at all - hers fall on their sides and sleep sop can't be too painful! :D I don't think you have anything to worry about.... If you keep in touch with your breeder (and providing he/she is close) why not ask if you can watch him/her strip a dog and it will be clearer!
  17. Goldieneale - go compare the prices on the website I posted - http://www.pricelesspets.com.au/products.php3?page=prod 6 months of Advocate only $64.10 - a hell of a lot cheaper! And no I don't work for the company - just love the prices :D Oh and I am NOT a fan of the yearly shots at all....my old girl had it once - i didn't like the afteraffects - she got very quiet, had the trots for a few days and was not herself...would never use them again....
  18. DD - some areas of Australia - such as the colder areas are not as prone to Heartworm as the mozzies don't breed and thrive as well. However, I note you live in Sydney and Sydney has a high incidence of HW infestation so absolutely use HW meds. I don't use the yearly injection but do use the monthy chewables. Do a hunt on the net and you'll find prices much less than those from your vet or local pet store...here's one site http://www.pricelesspets.com.au/products.php3?page=prod I have used them in the past - fabulous service - ordered it one morning and it was in the mailbox when I got home the next afternoon.
  19. an oxymoron in itself - I won't EVER feed tinned food (regardless of the brand) because I am only too aware what slop and grub goes into them....likewise I do not buy "pet mince" from most butchers for the same reason.....no regulating of pet foods as there is fopr human foods I'm afraid....
  20. My old girl is on Nutrience Senior but the rest are on Royal Canin...love the stauff!
  21. I'd agree it is an anxiety issue - something about grooming makes him nervous/upset etc. Do you groom him on the table? if so start desensitizing him to it - put treats there for him to get to....maybe even let him eat his dinner up there (supervised of course)...make it less like a chore to be feared than a game.... Mine get bored after a while on the table so down they come for a romp and a game to break it up....
  22. In defence of owners - before I learned to groom myself I paid someone to groom my kids while I watched and learned. One of the big no-nos in our breed is pulling out all the hair out of their ears. Groomer knew it (I had told her about 50 times) - she waits until I go the toilet and attacks my boy's ears - is knee deep with a pair of forceps when I return - he's howling in pain and she's screaming and thumping him to stand still.....I pulled her off him, told her what I thought and left - never to return. He ended up with a chronic ear infection from the dirty implements - she also took off the top layer of skin from the inside of his ear - he couldn't stand having it touched for weeks and STILL gets very nervous when we do a weekly clean.....
  23. Yep all of what everyone has mentioned but include all forms of melon - particularly wate and rock... My old girl will bypass everything and I do mean everything for the peelings from carrots....have no idea why but as soon as I start scraping she starts drooling.....odd but cute.
  24. I've heard it referred to as "cold tail" where the blood supply is restricted normally due to trauma. The vet (or a good doggie chiropractor) should be able to help BUT I wouldn't leave it for too long as the longer blood supply is restricted the riskier that it can be restored....
  25. If this is the case then really you should look at the type and quantity of exercise and find the "ideal" amount of both. As his condition improves because of the methods of treatment you are using then he will probably feel better and want to do more. IMO it's important that you be even more vigilant if you want your boy to still be able to walk in a few years. You'll find activities I'm sure that will keep him mentally alert without overtaxing him or undoing the good that treatments are providing...... I can highly recommend Cartrophen shots but found once started i had to be very vigilant with my old girl that she didn't overdo it because the drug made her feel so much better.
