  1. I have had many animal jobs over the past 10 years and I am still trying to find one that suits me. I have worked as pet shop assistant, dog groomer, trainee vet nurse and now I am a kennel hand/vet nurse assistant. Still dont love my job but with every position I gain more experience that'll help me when I finally find the position that I really want. My advice is to try to get into grooming. In my opinion if you can handle all the naughty dogs that dont like having their faces, butts, legs, ears etc touched than you can pretty much handle anything. Lots of professions will love someone with grooming experience especially vet clinics and animal shelters. Grooming is how I got my foot in the door at a vet clinic.
  2. I work at Adelaide Plains Vet Surgery at Two Wells (about 20 minutes out from Salisbury). We get quite a few cruciate cases there. Worth checking out!!
  3. Generally dogs go home the same day. All they need is somewhere quiet to rest as they may still be feeling the affects of the anaesthetic. Also make sure he doesnt chew at the sutures. if he does or licks excessively at them he will need an elizabethan collar.
  4. Try Happy House Sitters. I registered with them and will be starting my first sit within a few weeks. It's free for home owners to list.
  5. Thanks. I know the AWL is hard to get into - you have to commit to 2 days a week for 3 months voluntary shelter hand work. it's hard to do when you need to work everyday.
  6. does anyone know of anywhere/anyone needing a kennel hand? i live in the adelaide northern suburbs.
  7. Everyday at work! It can be embarassing but I just figure it makes me good at my job cos the animals love me, well most of them.
  8. Thanks Mother Moocher. the potential house sit has no dogs only indoor cats, so having an outdoor dog didnt seem much of an issue for the owner, especialyy when she saw my resume and knew her cats would be in good hands. Thanks Fiveplusone. Glad you had success with the house sitting situation also.
  9. Try house sitting. I have a large dog and may have found a 2 month house sit for me and my girl, depending on whether yard is safe (have to go view it). Yay! It probably helps if your dog lives outside. Mine does, although I wish I could sneak her in. It was through happy house sitters.
  10. Try pet sitters. Here's the address www.petsitaus.com.au
  11. Thanks for that fiveplusone. it gives me hope!
  12. I hope the housesitting works out well for you also. I am also registered with Happy House Sitters and it seems to be a good site, although finding a housesit where you can take your own pet is near impossible. Oh well. Keep us informed with how it goes!
  13. Oh, it's a shame you arent in Adelaide. I work for Pet Sitters Australia and this is the service we offer. We also offer this service is Sydney, but so far not in Melbourne. What a shame! Perhaps you could contact those pet sitters you have found and ask if they can offer that service. You never know they may be willing to help you out.
  14. You could always look into having a pet sitter - either one that lives overnight in your home, or alternatively board with one of the carers in their home. For more information check out www.petsitaus.com.au. I am a pet sitter for them in Adelaide but they also have carers in Sydney. If you have any queries call Kerry and she can give you some great advice. She's the owner and very experienced in dog behaviour. Good luck!
  15. I am a carer for Pet Sitters Australia. For dogs we recommend either overnight care in your home, where the carer stays overnight in your home, or overnight care in a carers home, where your dog stays in the carers home. I offer overnight care in the owners home. What area are you in? i may be available. If you'd like more information check out our website at www.petsitaus.com.au. Good Luck!
  16. hi teebs. nice to meet someone in the field. i havent actually started my pet sitting job yet as ive just finished my pet first aid training. now i am waiting for the jobs to come in as i am working for a company, not for myself. it's be great to hear how you like what you do and any advice.
  17. thanks clyde. i have actually registered with a house sitting agency but no luck there. maybe its just not meant to be. i think i will just look at pet friendly rentals. that's hard enough.
  18. yes that was me. i was hoping to house sit for free so i could take my dog but there doesnt seem to be many people that would like that. i have just started working as a pet sitter and we offer overnight stays in the pets home for a fee. just wondering if many people would pay for this if they could get people to do it for free
  19. HI ALL, I have recently started working as a pet sitter and was just wondering how many of you would use a pet sitter and why or why not?
  20. Thanks everyone for the advice.
  21. Hi, im looking at doing some house sitting in the northern suburbs of adelaide but have come across a major issue, people with pets to mind don't want a house sitter with pets of their own. I have a beautiful 10 year old german shepherd who's quiet and not a problem. So why can't people see through this? I have lots of experience with animals, having worked in vet clinics, as dog groomer etc. My question is - would any of you ever consider a house sitter with pets of their own?? Would love some advice.
  22. You can stay at Highway 1 Tourist Park with dogs on lead. It's located on Port Wakefield Road, Bolivar. http://www.highway1touristpark.com/
  23. Yeh sure. Here it is www.petsitaus.com.au We can offer any length of care you require. Just let Kerry know what your requirements are and she can match you to the right person. Good luck!
