Comfy Nest, Thanks To A Baaaadd Dog!
poodlemum replied to poodlemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our maggies are probably getting some odds & ends of Poodle wool, as well, so their chicks will have a beautiful wool & foam-lined nest! When I lived at Yarrambat (north of Melbourne) there was a semi--tame Magpie who used to hang around. He (I always referred to it as he, although I have no idea what sex it was) started cadging food when he was very young & used to come back every year, later bringing his kids, as well . At one stage he was tame enough that he would sit on my arm & take food out of my hand. He wasn't the least bit scared of the dogs, or even my cat! He liked bread but his all-time favourite was Eco-Pet dogroll. -

Can I Take Another Dog To The Melbourne Show
poodlemum replied to Gamby's topic in General Dog Discussion
hmmm - normally at Obedience Trial only dogs who are entered are allowed in. Perhaps you could contact the show secretary & find out. Whatever happens - best of luck. You have my utmost admiration. I used to get nervous enough at an ordinary Trial, I would be packing myself at the Royal -

Some people hate maggies, but I love them - they are so intelligent and I love their song. -
How Did You Find/choose Your Dogs Breeder?
poodlemum replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
My ex & I got our 1st Poodle, about 30 years ago!! , from a lady who was then one of NZ's top Standard Poodle breeders. We were VERY fortunate to get Rana - she was originally intended to be exported to Australia but the transaction fell through. We were recommended to Karen of Wildwind Poodles by someone else who had a Standard Poodle. Rana eventually ended up in Australia anyway, when we moved here in 1982 and, about 5 years later we got another puppy from Karen, that bitch was sold on full register & Karen encouraged us to become breeders. The 1st litter we had from Sascha we did a "swap" with Karen a black bitch puppy from our litter for a white dog puppy (Lennon) from her litter. Lennon & Sascha were the foundation of our line of Standards. They've long gone to Rainbow Bridge but just before we split up we got another bitch from Karen so that we could continue the line. Unfortunately, with the split, my ex ended up with the 2 of our dogs from the "Wildwind" line. I am hoping, when I can persuade OH to let me get a bitch, that I can find one from the Wildwind lines again. -
Harrison & Dylan have a covered foam pad out on the porch, in case they get exhausted from their play & need a snooze The other day I took the cover off to wash it & foolishly left the foam pad outside. The next day, OH observed Harrison tossing something around & discovered that H had ripped up the foam - pieces are scattered all over the yard! I haven't got around to picking it up yet (slack, I know) and was looking out the door earlier to see an enterprising magpie gathering up shreds of the foam - we have a pair building a nest nearby. Looks like some magpie chicks will be greeting the world in a very luxuriously-appointed nest!

hehe - I had a Burmese cat named Anna and she was Definitely the Alpha of the pack - none of my dogs would mess with her As long as they behaved themselves, and kept to their place, she was happy to snuggle up to them, and vice-versa. My pointer boy, Wings, loved all cats, ours or anyone else's, and they loved him. I really think though, as Staranais said, that any breed can be good with cats if they are brought up with them. I also found that my dogs (with the exception of Wings) would chase other people's cats.

Can I just say - there is no such thing as a "Cavoodle" - it's a Cavalier/Poodle cross!!

Another vote here for leaving the desexing till 12 months, at least. That's usually when I would desex a Standard Poodle

Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)

Wings used to drool like a tap being turned on when you had a treat for him -
Oh definately - just that the potential is much higher if there's some testosterone involved, as well

Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)

As the former owner of a GSP, I can definately recommend. "Wings", my beautiful solid liver GSP, was wonderful dog - loving, good-natured, full of fun and got on well with most other dogs. He was honorary "Uncle" to many Poodle puppies and I still chrish the mental picture of him lying down with puppies pulling his ears, biting his tail and him growling, but the tail wagging! Wings being "King of the park" at Victoria Gardens, Prahran -
I would have to agree with Poodlefan about the risks of having 2 entire males together. The worst fight I ever saw in my house was between 2 entire male Standard Poodles, a breed not usually known for agression. In that case there was food involved and it taught me to always feed them separately and I would always recommend feeding 2 males separately. Feeding time can often be problematical - the 2nd worst fight I ever saw in my own home was between mother & son (with mother getting the best of it)

Wise words! I remember years ago a friend of mine died of cancer - she had a lovely cocker spaniel who was very popular with everyone in the park where we all used to walk our dogs. Any one of us would gladly have given Winnie a home, but my friend's sister had her PTS because she "didn't have time to look after a dog" I know OH will look after the dogs or, if he is not able to, my sister will - I have put it in my will.

was it teacup hehe - I picked up a puppy from a carpark, as well (although, since I HAD bred her mother, I was pretty sure she was purebred )

Totally agree with Gayle - I prefer my puppies to go to their new homes at 8 weeks. By that time they are house-trained and at the stage to bond to someone. I will keep them longer in some circumstances (where the buyer is unable to pick them up at 8 weeks, for instance) but 8 wekks is, to me, the optimum time. To the OP, it is also mandatory in Vic that all puppies must be registered and sold with papers. I know some so-called "ethical" breeders sell puppies without papers, I would run a mile from them. Even though the majority of my puppies have gone to pet homes, they have always gone with papers.

Rescue Requirements For Puppy School Attendance
poodlemum replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'd agree with this advice... until then, you can make yourself the bees knees with your new pup at home in a controlled environment. Another word of advice - be choosy about the obedience club you go to too - some of them aren't exactly perfectly run either. T. By 16 weeks, the first peak socialisation period has been and gone. You don't get a second chance at it. If a pup has access to other dogs and gets to meet a heap of people, before last vaccs that's one thing. Far too many go nowhere, meet no one and pay for that lack of experience for life. I do agree with this - of course in my case I have always had older dogs around for socialisation and have made sure that the puppies had plenty of inter-action with people. If you have friend with older dogs, and you know those dogs have been vaccinated, then allowing the puppy to socialise with them is preferable to exposing them to a possibly frightening experience at a badly-supervised "puppy school" -
Rescue Requirements For Puppy School Attendance
poodlemum replied to Jacquiboss&scoop's topic in General Dog Discussion
I must admit that I don't think a lot of "puppy schools". They are often run by people who have no idea (sorry, being a Vet nurse does not necessarily make you an expert on dog behavour) and, as you said, allow the clsses to become a free-for-all. I prefer to wait till after the final vaccination and take them to a puppy class at an Obedience Club. -
When I first got Harrison I was sitting at my table having some lunch when I heard a strange crunching noise. I turned aroud and there was Harrison, dreamy far-away expression on his face, munching on the corner of the coffee table I did have a picture, which I posted in the Poodle Thread long ago, but can't find it now. He was known thereafter as "The Furniture-Fanger"

My commiserations! The leather-eating gene exists in Standard Poodles, as well - a bitch of mine ate all the armrests of a leather lounge suite I have also lost a few gloves over the years!
-
Maybe a purebred dog forum isn't for you then? Prada's nickanme is bitch-face... do you think she cares that I call her that? I'm sorry but that dog is not attractive, at all. Snap! My old girl, Sascha, was lovingly known as "bitch-face"

To me, that is the best solution of all. My boys, as I mentioned before, are always inside, in their crate, when OH & I are both out. They just go off to sleep and are not at all distressed. That way I know they are both safe, no-one can get to them and Dylan, the escape artist, can't find a way to get out. I used to live in a suburb of Melbourne that had quite a high proportion of boarding kennels. I didn't find the barking much of a problem - it was usually when someone arrived to pick up/drop off a dog - but one dog contstantly barking/howling all day would drive me crazy (but no way would I resort to poison - not for the dog, anyway )
