  1. I do 3 monthly - I avoid any of the all in one treatments, I don't trust big lots of mixed chemicals. I don't even get the HeartGard that has the intestinal wormer added.
  2. I do not think you can teach a dog to not come into a room when you feel like it. If you never let the dog in there then I think it can be done. I would just leave the baby gate up.
  3. Whoops - I've been using it for a few years now and only giving it once a day. If you wanted to do it twice a day just mix the powder in with some warm water and pour over the dry food - if the dog doesn't like the taste (and so laps up the liquid that didn't soak in) then add a little gravy powder or similar for flavour.
  4. I have no idea what I taught in trainers language, I don't waste time thinking about stuff that works. I never had to end the game once it was taught - I was simply NEVER mouthed too hard during our game and I was never mouthed at any other time nor was anyone else. Perhaps the term "bite inhibition" means something other than what I think, so change my statement to: I do believe I can "achieve results" and I believe I have "achieved results" with the past dogs whom I would play fight with.
  5. My response would be "does this achieve results"? My guess is that for the majority of trainers, it would be sending confusing messages to the dog. It's hard to be consistent when when the message "no biting" becomes "no biting unless you a gentle". How hard is "gentle" to a growing dog who's ability to bite hard is increasing as it grows? I believe you can teach a dog bite inhibition and I believe I have done it in the past with the dogs whom I would play fight with.
  6. Objects - fine. Humans - I used to be fine with play fighting where the dog would grab but not bite - I'd still end up with red marks all over my arms. These days I don't do that and as a rule I don't want my dogs mouthing at all. That said I do have one who mouths from time to time at the moment (he likes to hold your wrist when you pat him). I have mostly given up on stopping it because it's only occasionally and he only does it to me - if I had kids, he did it to others or hurt me at any point I'd put a stop to it and I will be making sure to get on top of it early with any future pups that begin mouthing behaviour.
  7. The duck barf mix from Canine Country I have found to be excellent for keeping bulk on a dog without making them flabby.
  8. Not a dog I own but a dog I bred did learn to bark through the collar - you could see him steal himself for it and then bark. I think in his case it was due to poor training with the collar and thus an inconsistent message about when he was and wasn't allowed to bark. No ideas to help though sorry
  9. Definitely the principle applies and should conformation people want to complain, they would have a case (if the exemption was applied for the reason I've guessed). BP classes aren't entered differently from the other classes as sweepstakes and property classes are so it would be too hard/costly to give the exemption in that case I would think.
  10. I would imagine that the reason they exclude sweepstakes and property classes is that these classes do not contribute towards the available titles (CH and GRAND CH). You can win prizes but no challenge points. So to be the same application of rules, any agility round where only prizes and not qualification towards titles is on offer would be exempt.
  11. Could the clubs change their entry structure to give teams entry into all classes with the one entry? Something like $30 for entry to games (snooker, gamblers and strategic pairs), $15 for jumpers, $15 for agility etc. So at most 3 entries per trial. Agility is always going to be at a disadvantage while it is one entry to one run - there isn't really any other way to easily raise revenue on a user pays basis other than adding/increasing an entry levy.
  12. I would never recommend nor use any kind of head collar, so would choose the check chain.
  13. Do you "pop" with a prong collar though, I thought that was for check chains and that the pressure of the prong collar as it tightens is the correction.
  14. I found this hard to believe so have been googling and consensus seems to be that it can cause bloat (in any breed of dog) but where a dog is very hot and then given ice or ice water and a substantial quantity not just a mouthfull or one cube.
  15. I'm lazy and wouldn't want to be cleaning beds either.
  16. What happened to healthy and natural dog chews like raw meaty bones: roo tail, lamb neck, brisket bones?!?!! The above is a good chew item for occupying the dog and for keeping teeth clean but not something for inside. For inside chewing I have to go for very heavy duty stuff as I have two toy-destroyers. Nylabones and solid rubber toys like this or this. ETA: Not edible in the way food is but I can't think of much that is food but clean enough to be eaten on your carpet.
  17. So a breeder that is breeding with a clear x carrier would DNA test the pups prior to registering the litter? I wouldn't - there is no point in knowing a pup is a carrier unless the purchaser is buying the pup as breeding potential. Anything I keep I will test once other testing is complete (hips are far more important than a possible carrier status). Would the price of the carrier pup be cheaper than a clear pup? Not for me, as Wylie said, it cost me the same to raise it whatever the status and as anything but a breeding potential, carrier status doesn't matter at all. Breeding potential it can make it harder to find a mate for (i.e. only a Clear dog) but it is still not the end of the world. Marking down a non-breeding-potential pup for being a carrier is like making a pup cheaper because it's markings aren't perfectly symmetrical - nonsense!
  18. Washing once a month in Summer and probably 2-3 months in Winter - washing being with a soap type product. They will get a rinse in just water more often than that and if they get really gross they will get a bath in between the monthly one. I always get the shampoo that is safe to use with flea treatments as it doesn't strip as much of the oil away and BCs can be prone to dry skin.
  19. It's an extension of a US event that's been around for years and you know how those Yanks like to think they are the whole world.
  20. Whoops, I've given you a bum steer alanglen. It seems ADAA agility only exists in Qld and NSW so unless you knew the rules and were prepared to travel interstate, you wouldn't be able to attend a qualifying event. Frisbee qualifying is in Qld as we don't have clubs outside the state yet. Flyball is in Victoria though from their website.
  21. This is not confirmed but I believe Dock Dogs has already been selected. I believe there is one guy who's been trying to get the sport started here in Australia and he's got a small group who've been training with him. Apparently there's a special pool being brought over for it - I can't wait to watch this! Alanglen - qualification is open to anyone from any state, you'd just need to find out from the sports associations when and where they are holding their qualifying events.
  22. I don't know about Dock Dogs, I know ADAA has had at least one selection event up here.
  23. If purchased as a pet, sports dog or show dog: If it were a carrier I would do nothing, it makes no difference to anything. If it were affected then I would be asking for a full refund of the purchase price if the condition would negatively effect the dog, cost money to treat etc. If purchased as a breeding prospect then I wouldn't have purchased the pup without the parents being tested for the condition. A carrier would not be the end of the world though.
  24. I posted in Dog Sports about this a while ago, it sound great. Canine Disc will be there too, $10000 in prizes, qualifying events are being held in the coming months and it's not hard to get started in this sport.
  25. No I don't, I got that bit of information from Poodlefan. I had a quick search and found this: Cervical Vertebrae, Middle Ear, and Brain Stem Injuries in Dogs Caused by Improperly Used Control Devices
