Remember you will also need an intestinal wormer that is given every 3 months.
-
The vet would have only intestinally wormed her if it's only every 3 months. Can you check your vet invoice and see what the wormer and service provided is listed as? Even give the vet a ring. A lot of vets offer their clients the choice of bringing their dogs in to be intestinally wormed because some owners have trouble giving their dogs tablets so the vet, who is usally pretty skilled at showing tablets down animals throats, will do this for them. $80 for just intestinal worming at your vets. Did they give you a product to take home for this $80 or was the $80 for being seen every 3 months and the vet administering a tablet? You need a product that does Heartworm and a product that does all of the Intestinal worms (hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm & whipworm). Sentinal Spectrum is a product that you give monthly and covers Heartworm and all Intestinal worms. Other Heartworm products such as Revolution are given monthly and covers Heartworm but only two types of intestinal worms. If you use a product like this you would need to give an intestinal worming product like Cannex or Drontal every 3 months.

Did your vet give you any brochures or literature on Heartworm and Intestinal worms? Heartworming products can be given once daily, once a month or in a yearly vacciantion (I do not like the vacciantion option) Heartworm Intestinal worming products should be given every three months. Intestinal Worms I would be discussing your options with your vet and as you are a novice purchasing your chosen product/s from them for the first time. After you fully understand what Heartworm & Intestinal worms are and what dosage and how often your dog needs treatment you might purchase the products online. Supermarkets can not sell Heartworm products. What was being discussed in the other thread was intestinal worming products.

Diesel Has Cushings And Seizures
puggy_puggy replied to DieselWeisel's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would be weighing up how much longer the surgery would give him. If the surgery would only extend his life by an extra few months more then if he had chemo or just was given pallative care drugs like the valium and prednisalone then I probably wouldn't do the surgery. But that is me. If the surgery could cure him and extend his life by years then I may have a rethink. If you do choose the pallative care option your boy will tell you when it's time to go. -

How has Diesel been? There's a small animals neurosurgeon in Melbourne. I think he might travel to Sydney sometimes as well. -

Couple Of Questions On Raw Diet
puggy_puggy replied to Tazzierescued's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I only feed once a day in the afternoon/evening. Other people feed twice a day. Your diet sounds pretty good. Remember that generally you should fed an adult dog 2% of their ideal body weight daily. So with Taz being 5kg that would mean 100grams of food a day. My veggie & fruit slops contain whole eggs that have been food processed. I generally feed.... Monday - Chicken necks & veggie slops Tuesday - Fish & veggie slops Wednesday - Chicken necks & veggie slops Thursday - Offal or Kangaroo or Beef or Lamb & veggie slops Friday - Chicken necks & veggie slops Saturday - Lamb bone Sunday - Offal or Kangaroo or Beef or Lamb or Fish & veggie slops This can swap and change a little. -
Bugger another vet misdiagnosing knuckling over. How deformed are his feet/legs now? Has he been diagnosed with have early closure of growth plates at all (which is another ocndition that is sometimes related)? Knuckling over (carpal laxity) can be treated and corrected fairly quickly when a puppy is young by a balanced diet and making sure it is not fed to much. Sounds like his diet wasn't changed at all which is a pitty because if his problems are just carpal laxity and he doesn't have an early growth plate closures then his legs/feet could have been fixed by now. How much food a day is he fed in terms of weight and how much does he weigh himself? Slowly reintroduce the joint guard and see if he has a reaction. If ok do the same with the fish oil but both seperatley. Can you post a photo of what his legs/feet are doing?

Do You Feed At The Same Time Every Day?
puggy_puggy replied to Winterpaws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mine get fed at about 5pm every day. If I am home and running late they come and find me to tell me it's dinner time. -

Oh no. Thought are with you. -
Hopefully the desexing should remove alot of the hormones making him feel the urge to mark. But some dogs who have gotten into a habit of doing so it doesn't really help. Make sure you tell him off if you catch him in the act. Belly bands are a band of material that you can put pads into and basically wrap around your dog so that if they do pee they pee in the pad and band rather then all over your things. You could make them yourself or buy them here Belly Bands
-
Sounds to me like he is marking his territory and basically being a little brat. Is he desexed? Belly bands might be an option untill you teach him that he is not the boss of the house.

Every vet also says feed them dry food. (why can't I find that poking stick emoticon?)

Crate Training- Do You Really Need A Divider?
puggy_puggy replied to RockabillyLove's topic in Puppy Chat
Only ever seen crates that come with dividers. Have never seen dividers sold seperatley. If a puppy has to go to the toilet it is going to go no matter if you have a divider or not. -

Ahhh got to love the out of hours usage of human MRI's. -
What a horrible thing to be faced with. I have come across dogs that have had chemo or were going through chemo and their owners said that they had coped very well with it. So if you do decide on chemo I wouldn't be to overly concerend that it owuld cause your boy more bad then good. But from what I understand it only offers a few extra months in most cases. I have cared for a pug in the last stages of cancer. His owners chose to use prednisalone. Apart from him not wanting to eat, having chronic diarrhea and wasting away he was a very happy boy. He let me know when he wasn't happy and that it was his time to go. Make sure you remove carbs from his diet as they feed cancer. Omega oils are supposedly helpful as a supplement.

Don't feed rice it's not needed in a dogs diet. Just plain chicken is fine. Why is he getting joint guard & fish oil? Does he have joint problems? Unless he has problems with his joints I really wouldn't think an 11month old dog would need any supplements. How much are you giving? Some joint supplements can cause dogs to get the runs. And so can fish oil. Some dogs can find kangaroo to rich so get the runs. Some dogs can't cope with the fat in lamb and others can get the runs with fish. What did you feed the day before and the day that he had the runs? Did your vet check his anal glands? Could be the reason he is scooting.

Any news yet? -
Her worms could very well have zapped her bone, muscle or tendon strength. Seeing that she had worms I would also consider that the people that bred her weren't feeding her the appropriate diet so that could have played a part as well. Who knows. I've heard of puppies jumping off things and getting fractures but can't recall them doing so in normal play. Make sure you don't over feed her. She doesn't need the extra weight on her broken bone. Consider swapping the pigs ears or other such treats to veggies and fruit. I'm 4 weeks into at least a 10 week rehab with Poppy so I can feel your pain. Just make sure you are very strict about not letting her walk or run around.
-
Yes I to would suggest to get rid of the beef. It could well be to fatty for her. Make sure that the other meats and bones you are feeding are not to fatty. Kangaroo is a very low fat meat so might be worth considering over the others. When the pug I look after has a bit of a flair up, throwing up or the runs, the amount of enzymes she gets is increased.

What the? I'm in shock just reading what this person said. I would have been flabagasted to have actually been there in person when he said it. Erny I had a rescue that was fine one day and the next was screaming her head off and crying, supposedly because of pain, and not putting weight on one of her back legs. I prodded around and the sore spot seemed to up under her hip. I delayed going to the vets and crate rested. After 2 days, of little improvement, I did take her to the vets and he found nothing wrong with her hip other then the sore spot that I had also found. Because she was young he said to continue crate resting. The next day the little bugger was using her leg like nothing was wrong and was totally back to normal.

Lots of good vibes for your boy. The worst thing is not knowing. At least when he has had his MRI done you can decided how to deal with whatever the results may be. What state are you in? -
