Over the last few (six?) months, I've noticed Barkly has started resource guarding. And it's escalating. I suspect it's been triggered by time at boarding kennels. He's started growling whenever I approach him and he's got something of high value. He gets rawhide bones to chew on his mat at night. If I approach him, he'll put his head over the bone and start growling. I can take the bone off him but it's obvious he's not happy about it. Last night he took his bone into his crate. I could here him lightly growling. I was 10 feet away sitting on the couch. I've started rewarding him for letting me approach and been giving him higher value treats every time I take something away from him. I guess the theory is that approaching him and taking something away from him doesn't mean bad news. I've also been doing the "stand next to him, take his bone, reward, give his bone back, take it away, reward" cycle. I'm not sure it's helping though and I worry I'm inadvertently rewarding him for guarding behaviour. I've also started feeding him inside so eating in company worries him less. I'm really not sure what the best approach is. My next plan would be to stop giving him anything that's high value and conditioning him to tolerate approaches with low value items. Then gradually increase the value of the items. Sadly, that means no fresh bones, no hide bones, no dog biscuits. Any other advice? A comprehensive plan to deal with resource guarding anywhere on the net?

The link is up Luke. Actually I have no complaints with the marshalls, I think they were right in restricting me for safety reasons, they were very nice to me. What's a black R1 I'm not a bike person. The girl on the black bike went with my friend. Her initials are LD is that her? Small world if so. LOL. Small world. Yep - LD. What were the initials of your friend? (btw - I don't know LD very well, ridden with her a few times though).

It's hard shooting at Broadford unless you're inside the track (or have a 600mm lens!) I've heard they will sometimes let photographers inside the track (on a corner with a marshal). If you go again - let me know and I'll put you in touch with one of the organisers. Post a link when you've got them on Flicker I'm pretty sure I know who the girl on the black R1 is.

Hi All Just thought I'd give a quick (hopefully closing) update. I'm home from hospital - now on the "Hospital in the Home Program". I get daily nurse and doctor visits and I'm not allowed to drive while I'm still on the antibiotics (via a portable IV pump). 20 more days of IV antibiotics and I'm free. At least I'm home and slowly regaining my stamina. It's amazing how a couple of months of inactivity saps. Barkly comes home on Friday!!!! Thanks to everyone for their kind words. And thanks to Emma for looking after and putting up with me. Cheers Luke.

Thanks for the good wishes guys. Jules and Sal, if I think of anything I'll holler Jigsaw... Mine didn't start with glandular fever, but I've been through the surgery and the rest of it. Good to hear your son recovered

Hi All Just a quick message mostly to those at my clubs (Croydon, K9 and ADCV) but to everyone else I know in the agility community. Some of you may have noticed I haven't been at training or trials for a while. A couple of months ago (?) I got sick. Eventually really sick. Long story short - massive infection, months of IV antibiotics. I'm still in hospital and expected to eventually make a full recovery. I'm still at least a couple of months from being able to attend training and then a while still before I can think about trialling. Barkly is being looked after and living the life of luxury at Beds for Tails (http://www.bedsfortails.com.au). A huge thanks to Angelina and Steve. Anyway, if you hear anyone ask "What happened to Luke and Barkly?" - now you can tell them ;) If anyone needs to contact me, a PM here on DOL or a Facebook message is easiest. Email is a bit problematic at the moment. I can't bear the thought of going through my half dozen email account, digging up passwords and trawling through thousands of messages. Bounce angle...either straight up or just one click less than vertical. The only reason I get decent photos of Barkly is because he has a good "stay"
