Do Vets Send Found Dogs Straight To A Shelter?
trifecta replied to tikira's topic in General Dog Discussion
My local vet practice closes at 1.00pm on a Saturday. They wouldn't be holding a dog for which they wouldn't get paid over the weekend, so they would call the ranger to pick up before close of business if owner on microchip (if any) couldn't be contacted. -
It's not bickering, it's called ethical rescue practice. I see a lot of 'broking' dogs in rescue on DOL & I guess it happens elsewhere online, too - I am not on facebook. I cannot comprehend how someone in Sydney (or any other location) can recommend a dog in a pound, for argument's sake in Wagga, to a rescue group in Queensland. Surely it is up to the rescue groups to source dogs that fit in with their carers, practices, & their clientel. The rescue organisations should be liaising with rangers & forming relationships with pounds... not getting information & animals third hand. Personally, I am against the shipment of dogs willy nilly across the country where temperament & health status are unknown in expounded dogs. Where do these dogs end up? There are a myriad of rescues now, who knows which ones do the right thing? When I started out in rescue over 26 years ago everything was done at a local level, yes, that's old fashioned but at least there were measures which could be implemented when things went wrong. This probably doesn't belong in this thread, but it's been bugging me for a long time now.

The second link you indicated, gapvic, has it for $949 - I guess that is US$? Much more affordable than its main rival, the Zeiss 55mm f1.4 Otus.

Before a biopsy I would ask for a swab to be taken so you know precisely which antibiotics should be administered.

Finding A Breeder Of A Rescue Dog
trifecta replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Yes, come on over to the BSD thread in breed sub forum. It is a bit quiet at the moment & could do with invigorating :) bianca.a looks in all the time too. -
I would call the undercoat dense, if that helps? Although.... there is quite a variation between individuals. My girl, for instance, is a little too soft in the coat. Has he been wormed? I usually worm new rescue dogs upon arrival & then again in 2 weeks. I find worming really cleans out the coat.
-
In Tervs the guard hairs should be of medium harshness, not silky or soft nor wiry. The undercoat is usually woolly & very dense, providing a protective barrier. In desexed individuals the coat is often more wavy. HC, you should have a look at the breed standard & may I also recommend 'Belgians From Start to Finished' by Sallyann Comstock? It is available from Alpine Publications in the US. http://www.alpinepub.com/belgians-from-start-to-finished.html I use a pin brush to get out tangles & mats, then follow up with a Mason & Pearson hairbrush, which are expensive, but well worth the cost if you look after them. Some people use slickers, but personally, I am not keen on them. A rake is a good idea to get that dead undercoat out. I do not use conditioner..... & shampoo only once a year, following up with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Like a lot of working dogs, I find the coat repels dirt quite easily once they have dried out & washing makes the coat too fluffy. As for diet, I feed raw & have done for 26 years; but with time you will get to know your boy & find out what he thrives on.

Finding A Breeder Of A Rescue Dog
trifecta replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I would just like to say that Sally, our rescue officer for the BSD Club of NSW has been tracing dogs for many years. She has developed an eye for bloodlines, & also circulates photos & information to breeders Australia wide in an effort to track down an individual's origins. Sometimes dogs are not registered but breeders can identify dogs carrying their lines, so sometimes piece by piece a little history can be filled in. Other times it is not at all possible to identify dogs & we are left guessing...... but Sally will be doing everything she can to help Happy Camper because she really is the saviour of our breed & never turns away a Belgian in need. I do know, however, that the longer you have him, Happy Camper, the more you will bond to him as he is bonding with you. You have already experienced the Belgian nose poke & other idiosyncracies of the breed  . You will get to notice that he preempts what you are about to do, before you even do it. This breed is intuitive, sensitive & forms deep bonds. My guess is after 5 days with him, he will already be under your skin & you will never know how you lived without a Belgian before :D Oh yes, forgot to mention, he is GORGEOUS! -
Wow gapvic, agree you have obviously got a lot out of all the workshops you have done 14/52 ] Road trip by Groenendevil on Flickr

Finding A Breeder Of A Rescue Dog
trifecta replied to HappyCamper's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Yes but it may be a dog from interstate or may BYB. We help them all, including derivatives. Quite a few breeders rehome returned dogs through Sally, that way the adoption fee is put towards helping other Belgians needing assistance. Sally takes dog from all over the country not just NSW. -
Yes, dogbesotted, this really resonates with me. It is not normal for a dog to be that cold at this time of year. After I had posted earlier I was also thinking kidneys! Failure to regulate temperature is also an indication of kidney problems.

Please contact Sally Rogers, rescue officer for the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club Of NSW, 02 66449936. Sally will be able to help you :) -
Are you sure it is just the cold, or should I say cooler nights? Afterall, it hasn't really been cold yet, lowest temperature we have had here so far this year in the Southern Tablelands of NSW is 6 degrees. I think it is more than just being cold, I would be looking at pain reaction. Teeth grinding could be indicative of gut problems - has she been on anti-inflammatories? Oh sorry I just reread your post, of course you said she has been on all sorts of pain relief. I think you need to discuss this with your vet, there could be gut & circulatory problems going on.

What about the breeder, is it a papered dog? Juanita Strachan was a Boxer breeder local to Queanbeyan. Now in Goulburn, prefix is Thasrite. Maybe worth contacting her?

This has been posted before, but we all need a reminder! Footage of Akita in middle stages of bloat

agree, for all him capturing the moment and feeling of it all, I think he's shown a complete lack of sensitivity and empathy. Agree with both these statements, plus what about cultural sensitivity to viewing the dead? It would have been especially traumatic for any Aboriginal people at the meeting.

Thanks for the encouragement, gapvic! There is another workshop at the NPG in May http://www.portrait.gov.au/site/programs_category.php?categoryId=52 Is anyone familiar with Victorian photographer Abigail Varney? I googled her, but couldn't find much. -

Actually I didn't take that many photos.... concentrating on listening & absorbing, I suppose? Also, a busy environment with a large group. There is a set of some of my shots on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/groenendevil/sets/72157643139110955/ I like this one It was taken in a long, dark hallway with light coming through a window at one end. The camera (& I ) really struggled with the ISO but the graininess makes it look like an old canvas. Would like to do the workshop again with the knowledge I have now  -
Schipperke..... the little Belgian!

Yes, unlimited water & also some relaxed walking to loosen up - maybe 10-15 minutes at a time. I wouldn't confine in a crate, dog is better just mooching around.
