Em's Early Retrieving Training
RubyStar replied to The Spotted Devil's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Complete and utter novice here but our instructor showed us how to do this last weekend ..... You throw the dummy to the left or right with the dog in front of you, then cast you arm out to wherever you have thrown the dummy and say whatever cue word you will use to send your dog (eg 'over' or 'left' or 'right') and as the dog has already seen the dummy land, all it is doing is learning to read your body language in conjunction with where the dummy is ....... I expect (and would hope!) someone will correct me if I am wrong! Thanks GR I guess I was looking for how to teach the left/right backs not left/right overs but I can see how starting it like this would probably help in teaching backs I guess I'd be lumping if I taught her to get one directly behind her and expect her to turn 180 deg in the direction I ask for.... baby steps RS, baby steps! I'm going to work on this tonight I think ;) Meant to be doing agility but think I might use tonight more for some retrieving -

I know it's not the same State, but as an idea you can play around with it here - you can even put the plate onto different coloured cars. http://www.vplates.com.au/index.php?page=plate-styles Hey that's pretty nifty, thanks! I would go the black plate with white writing. You don't want it to blend with the white car, you want it to stand out See I am not so sure I want it to stand out so much! I think having my first personalised plate is enough stand out I can handle in one hit without it being too in your face :D BUT, I do like the black with white writing. We can get hot pink and stuff here too and I'm definitely not game enough for that! Just wanted something that blended in nicely with the car I think I know what I want as my plate, but cos there are a few other choices I am not so sure! It's a costly exercise if I decide I don't like it anymore -
Unfortunately dog jobs are extremely competitive and a lot are not even that well paying even if you get one. And being self employed as a trainer comes with the usual risks of having your own business.

Retrieving & Field Training Talk

I noticed in TSD's latest video and I think she mentioned it somewhere in this thread... is it necessary to teach retrieve from right heel position? Will you ever send from right in the field? -

Two observations from that video. 1. WOW! Em is going great guns 2. WOW! You are a really accurate thrower Thanks for showing me the overs and backs, but sorry for my dopeyness.... but it didn't really show me how to introduce the left and right backs to Ruby How do they learn to turn in the direction of the arm you used? Ruby is getting confused, she thinks I am asking her to down. Gosh I wish I only worked a couple of days a week (if at all!) so I can go and do some retrieving training. Need more hours in the day and more days in the week Thanks again for the video, I really enjoyed it!! And makes me realise how lazy I've been with my training -
Anyone know if NDTF courses are going to be available to us West Coasters?! I think I understand it as a distance learning thing, but you still need to attend a block of training in person somewhere? (which is either in Sydney, Melb or Bris?)

Been wanting a personalised plate for years, and always said when I get a new car I will do it. I've now had my new car for almost 2 years and I still don't have one. So now it's time to get serious! I've narrowed my choices down to a few, but my dilemma lies with the colour! My car is white, so would you go for a white plate with black writing, or black plate with white writing? I'm leaning towards white plate to blend in with the white car, but I haven't seen a lot of white plates around to know if it's the right choice Opinions (or photos!) welcomed! -
As far as I'm aware, SEDA are not big on positive reinforcement. Not true. Jobs are also advertised externally for these positions. If someone better qualified outside of AQIS applies vs an internal AQIS employee, already being an AQIS employee won't give you the upper hand. You've just got to be better suited to the job. Edit: I didn't read the Customs bit properly. Not sure if Customs get their recruits from AQIS? (remembering these are two separate groups). Pretty sure I've seen these positions advertised externally also, plus dog handlers for Corrective Services.

Absolutely fantastic news for Beans and Toby! Makes me so thankful neither of my girls suffer from allergies. I am a very lucky girl indeed as I had no idea allergies in dogs were so common so it wasn't something I took notice of when searching for a pup/rescue dog. I'll definitely be looking into allergies in lines when I go on the hunt for my next puppy, though I know this can never be a guarantee!

Thanks Yep I got it meant Greg Derrett and double box work, what I neglected to say was please explain where I can pick up some visual drills on this

More info please?

TSD, all sounds like its going fabulously!! Is there any chance you can do a little video for us (erm, me ) on how you're teaching her left and right backs and overs? :D I'd really like to start Ruby on some of this but clueless where to start! -
Could you not borrow it off a colleague?? I could, but that is a bit embarrassing More embarrassing than posting it publically that and the bakery is a fair walk from the office - I usually pick one up on my way over here in the morning. I found a packet of 2 min noodles in my work drawer (don't worry, only been there a couple of months ) so I'm eating that, but I am so not impressed. I HATE 2 min noodles!!!!

Quiet in here today! So annoyed with myself. I tend to leave my purse or debit card in my car after training, and forget to put it back in my handbag. So I have no money to buy any lunch All I wanted to do was buy a bread roll, 60c! And all I have on me is 35c I was organised enough to bring the cold meat and cheese slice to work and all, ready to make my bread roll but have no bread roll I'm such a pauper!!!

I agree. It seems some people believe buyers need to crawl and grovel in order to get a pup. I'd rather shop elsewhere. My mum enquired about a puppy a few weeks ago, just to see if they are planning any litters, and they wrote back the next day to say they are expecting a litter or two in a few months and if they are interested in one to reply ASAP. So my mum had a think, decided they'd like to go on the list and replied the next day to say so and invited the breeder to ask her anything she wanted and asked if she'd like to speak to her in person first or if they can visit them at a show. 2 weeks later, still no response to the email. She sent a follow up one to see if they got her reply, and haven't replied. I've told her not to be disheartened yet, as they might not check email all the time, but after 2 weeks of no response after they asked her to get back to them ASAP, I can see how she would be disheartened about this process. This after I have hammered into my family where to get their next dog from. My sister and her hubby and now my parents are looking at pups from registered breeders so I thought I'd done a good job in educating, but when breeders don't get back to them, it weakens our argument on where to source a good pup from!
-
And that is the quickest way to end ownership of well bred dogs for the general public. Or from breeders obtaining a nice bitch to start/continue their own lines for future generations... remember, you also had to start somewhere obtaining your show/breeding quality bitch I understand how Ozjen feels, I could never breed as in my mind no one could look after a dog as well as i do and I would be worried constantly about the pups andif they are being well looked after. Of course I do too, but wishing the dog would only pop out a pup solely for the breeder to avoid the problem means the end of pedigree purebred dog ownership for us all, even us honest ones. I know ozjen said it in jest, but it's still a point I want to make because it makes me mad that the dishonest people out there make it hard for us honest ones because they cause breeders to guard their stock even closer, and yes in some cases, rightfully so.

I wouldn't swap my girls for anything in the world! Yep I think they did like having Mason visit
-
Well done everyone!! Go Kenzie!!
-
No I think it's Ruby that Mason sometimes annoys Millie likes the boyyyys! Millie is what I have decided is perhaps autistic. Crazy and misbehaved and lacks social skills sometimes, but a bloody genius when she wants to be Trust me, if you lived with Ruby, she would start to bore you! She is so well behaved at home and hard to switch on sometimes. You'd get more of a challenge out of Millie!! Ruby is just such a pleasure to live with, and to take on outings. Sure she might want to say hello to everyone, but so so easy. Don't ever have to worry about her Except I do, she's mummy's girl

What a morning! Glad you're ok though Wow you were 10 at the Five concert? I was in last year high school (or was I out of school already ) and went to their concert and thought it was awesome  I have heaps to do yet all I wanna do is nap, and it's not a Polaramine induced one, just a busy weekend induced one!

Hang on a sec, I thought we were doing a trade? Who u trading?? If its ruby i will take her.... Why is it that nobody wants Millie? She's my good little worker and still noone wants her :D
