  1. Its a tough one. I haven't read every post but I think you both seem like reasonable neighbours. Unfortunately an incident like this can turn a neighbourly relationship sour quite quickly. I don't think you or your dog have done anything wrong, but I do think that if you know your neighbour has a new pup it is up to both of you to scour the premises and make sure both dogs will be safe and if that means making sure there are no holes for either to get body parts through then so be it. I think both of you have made an error here because it is up to them to make sure there are no holes for their pup to get injured considering that you own a larger breed and I think it is up to you keep your dog safe from such possibilites and accusations.
  2. I don't have a story to share, but I have really enjoyed reading this thread. It has brought a tear to my eye & made me smile .
  3. Does the lab x kelpie seem like a smart dog? Don't agree with the x of course but kelpies are so often x breeds I am really curious about that mix, because they are both such intelligent breeds.
  4. Exactly why I always get rescue...... Poor things Look at those faces
  5. The kelpie is just tooooo afterall I am bias (he he) What a good lab. The guy in that commercial used to be on Neighbours.
  6. Doesn't matter how many times I read this one, it still makes me
  7. Thanks for the belly laugh pm ;) ;) That animal communicator appears to have some real unique skills
  8. What a handsome dog. I especially like the part where he has a delicate little flower on his head ;)
  9. It's tough having a d.a dog. People with friendly dogs quite often don't understand the extra emotional challenges we owners of d.a dogs go through. Just taking your dog for a walk can cause a lot of grief if an irresponsible person considers it ok to let their "friendly" dog run up to yours. There are far too many non thinking people out there. I understand your grief pf, I have a d.a dog myself, I almost broke my back picking him up the other day because someone let their two off leash maltese run up to him. Two bites and they would have been no more
  10. Sooo sorry Chewbacca.... Wishing you the very best during this extremely tough time.
  11. So sorry for your loss . What a terrible freak accident. Don't feel guilty you did your best to keep her safe. It was time for her heavenly hug.
  12. I wondered the same thing. What makes you think it is jealousy & not something else? If this behaviour continues or gets worse what are you going to do with your girl? It must be quite stressful for her.
  13. This is an interesting concept and will cause me to look at my pooch photo's in more detail. Penny looks hesitant to me not so much fearful. She is looking directly at Kivi ears half down as if to say back off so I can come out of the water. This should bring up some great kodak moments.
  14. No No No Never allow mouthing or biting it encourages unacceptable social behaviour towards humans. They must learn that if they feel the need to mouth or bite it is on an innaminate object. edit: 2 scolds for effect.

    Snoopy

Sorry for your loss Smisch. Sounds like he couldn't have asked for a better home. RIP Snoopy
  16. I have put a stop to it already. You make a good point - everyones space should be respected
  17. So glad it has gone well for you.
  18. I would definately agree that handling techniques play the biggest part in bar knocking, e.g. late cues or poor positioning. I have only worked with kelpies so I can't speak from experience about other breeds, but I have found that the kelpie is a great natural judge of height. I'm sure that that some breeds wouldn't be so switched on in this area so would need extra attention given. I will be watching this thread with interest. Great topic :D
  19. I thought I would give an update for those that may have a similar problem. We agreed last week that my dog has a movement obsession,, but I have also concluded that my movements are the biggest obsession of all. So this week at agility I tethered him when he wasn't on a run. I kept walking in different directions consistently so instead of focussing on the other dogs he focussed on me we would then do touch/treat. That way when it was time to do a run his focus was on me not another dog that just ran. We had a couple of mishaps but definately much better and on the road to a recovering the mess I created. I have also started working on a tug toy. Thanks for all your help and especially to those who pm'd me I got some really helpful tidbits.
  20. I watched your flyball quite extensively at the pet expo and I loved it. My dog was raring to go. It is something I have always wanted to do, but the closest venue to us is South Brisbane & they train on Sundays, I work on Sundays so would love a Saturday arrangement. I'm sure there would have to be a dog club on the Gold Coast interested in this considering it is not here at the present. If you do one on Sats I'm there!
  21. Wow. That was fantastic . There is nothing quite like watching an accurate agility run. I agree that her communication is impeccable. Lately I've been making more mistakes than my dog
  22. Yes dogdude you have worded it perfectly thankyou - a movement obsession is what it is - It has only been a major issue for the last two weeks, but I do believe it has been created by allowing bird chasing as a fun leisure activity. He has never been as disobedient as he is at this point in our relationship. He has always been a high maintenance dog but at the moment I am extremely frustrated with his lack of focus on me. I will definately use toys as motivators and I have decided that I am going to put a stop to the bird chasing all together as he is a very excitable dog. To answer your questions vicki he is 3 but acts like he is 18months he still looks and acts like a pup. He is not extremely food motivated, but he is toy & ball motivated, so I will take some of your advice on this thread and use these tools.
  23. That is a very logical & sensible idea laffi thanks. I will definately give that a go.
  24. Well I have inadvertently ruined my dog momentarily on the agility course. We were doing really well and he was very focussed, but lately with all the rain their have been lots of ducks in the dog park so instead of throwing a ball I have allowed my boy to chase the ducks, almost daily, he doesn't hurt them mind you he just loves the run. My dog is now not focussed on me at all during group agility for the last two weeks. He watches every other dog that moves and takes off when he gets over excited. He comes back on recall, but it is driving me crazy. When I sat down and thought about it last night I realised that by allowing him to chase the birds I have increased his prey drive. I could kick myself for not being smarter about this considering I have a working dog. :D Any suggestions on how to fix this asap would be much appreciated - of course the first thing I will put a halt to is bird chasing
