  1. I am not wanting to debate the children issue, but endeavouring to point out was that how would anyone NOT be surprised that humans would NOT do the right thing with their dogs, when SOME humans dont do the right thing by children or other humans. Offensive???!!!Why would you be offended, I did not mention you, specific people, conditions or diseases. Are you then saying what I stated does not happen.Believe me it does. Having worked for Community Services I can say it definitely does.I was making an analogy, but obviously did not do it well!!
  2. What hope is there that people will do the right thing with their dogs when humans cannot do the right thing with regard to having children of their own when they have diseases or conditions that will be passed onto their off spring and yet they still selfishly get pregnant or father a child.
  3. I know of a couple of rescue groups who have been offered help by Chris Brown, and he was very kind and generous in his support.
  4. Sad that 7 years old is considered "old" by some members of the community. This is a good move by the RSPCA.I am sure once a person adopts an "old" dog, you appreciate the special joy they bring. Have adopted oldies myself and would do it again when I decide to add to my menagerie.
  5. My grandmother used to say to me as a child, when I was with her when we would hear a dog howl, that is meant you would hear of a death.Always made shiver run up my spine, then...but now know it was an old wives tale...but one she took very seriously and would get most sad. My dog howls when my husband asks him to sing.
  6. The extra publicity will probably bring in more donations.
  7. My friends dog had incontinence but with no cause that could be determined, despite lots of tests, and the vet put him on Incurin...every second day,and he has been right ever since....a few years now.
  8. At least, a little comfort I know, but they do put out a balance sheet where you see where they spent [or overspent] their donations or income. Others do not...all hidden behind the old cry of "for the welfare of the dogs and cats", yet visit their shelter and see no improvement there...at least for the kennels, but the admin.area had been upgraded.....a comfort I am sure for the poor dogs, who often sit for months until they finally leave....one way or another. $3 million is an amazing amount of money. The Board must be easily swayed to agree that this money would be spent where it has.......wonder do they never visit the dogs like the late Mr.Samway.
  9. What could have been a wonderful opportunity to do so much good, is wasted. Money like this does not come along very often. A lot of larger charities use donated money in this fashion....on offices, administration, money making concerns, and none on the very reason for their existance, their "clients". The same in NSW with a couple of larger animal shelters always after money but little goes on the accommodation for their dogs and cats...they get the money in, but nothing ever seems to improve for the animals they are supposedly "caring" for.
  10. I was told the other day by a vet nurse, that Frontline has gone back to an original recipe and is bringing out a different product, possibly as a reaction to customers claims that their product just does not work. I was never happy with it, new or old recipe. I like Advantage.
  11. Sorry for your loss.It is never easy. There are two in Sydney that I know of. Pet Rest and Pets at Peace.I have used the latter through my vets and it was handled very well.
  12. Sorry if this seems like silly question. But, why do the RSPCA transfer the dogs they are not going to keep until they get a home. Why do they not put them to sleep themselves? If they are able to be rehomed from DAS why then were they rejected by RSPCA? I am not from Canberra so I am not familiar with the protocol in this region.
  13. I am showing my ignorance, I know, but who is Mia Freedman? What does she do or what has she done in the past.? All of you seem to be aware of her, but I have never heard of her, and thought I was reasonably well read. Is she like a Paris Hilton personality?
  14. Sydney Dogs and Cats Home is very much hit and miss in regard to their rehoming. They publicly cling to the no-kill reputation from the past, but that is for publicity and fund raising. The cannot be classed as no-kill now, with the number PTS and them using RSPCA to do temperament testing. They keep some for long periods but others don't get much of a chance. There is no set formula used. Few older ones are given the chance for a new home nor ones with issues, health or behavioural. With them expanding to service more and more councils, they don't have the space to keep all of their dogs for lengthy periods. They are not a large facility, with limited cage space. They also don't normally work with rescue except if rescue pay the full adoption fee, but even then that doesnt always guarantee rescue will be permitted to take the dog. They often say they want the dog to go to a new home straight off and not into foster care. They don't run a foster programme either, although there are a couple in foster care. They are an exception not the norm.Maybe this little one will be one of the lucky ones, either catch a staff members eye and deemed a favourite or they may actually agree for a rescue group to adopt it.But don't be fooled by what they put on their web site. They are just words, nothing else.
  15. Corn Meal is a filler: Is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the stach and germ and the separaton of the bran Chicken By-Product Meal: Made of clean ground and rendered parts of slaughtered poultry including necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines. Sometimes feathers and beaks make their way into the mix. Dried Beet Pulp: The dried residue from sugar beet, added for fibre but primarily is sugar. Chicken Fat: Added to make the food more enticing to your dog. Fats from chicken come from a process called *Rendering. To find out how this fat is obtained, read further: The Rendering Process: Obtained from leftovers from the slaughterhouses which can also include various euthanised animals such as dogs and cats. Renderers will usually combine all ingredients into one vat and do not normally check to see what is being combined. This means that whilst most of the leftovers might be from chicken, it could also include other animals such as road kill, dead pets, their collars, styrofome boxes and plastic bags. The rendering machine slowly grinds the entire mess in huge vats and cooked at 104 to 132 degrees celcius for up to 1 hour. The mixture is centrifuged (spun very quickly) and the grease/fat rises to the top and is removed from the mixture. The fat becomes the source of the animal fat in most pet foods. Source: "Foods pets die for" written by Ann M Martin. It's no wonder these foods are making our dogs sick!! Thankyou. That is very informative. Is that process for rendering only in the USA or is it the same here in Australia. Where is IAMS manufactured now?
  16. Thankyou all, for for your advice, it has been very helpful.Very kind of you to take the time to reply to my post. I read the link Aidan, and whilst it was heavy going ,I waded through it. It did make sense, but also debunked a lot I had previously been told over the years about dogs and their behaviour. Nekhbet, I am in Sydney, so cannot take you up on your kind offer, but thankyou. I realise my husband and I are the ones to take the lead. I am determined to succeed. My husband is not a good dog handler.I think he could do with more training than the 2 dogs!!Luckily though I am around them for the most of the awake time, so will have more of a chance to implement some much needed changes. I am having them both vet checked next Wednesday just in case there is something amiss. They both are under regular vet care, so it would be something underlying that has been missed and nothing obvious, with no symptoms. I even read bits of Cesar Milan's book, but couldnt find anything quite applicable. Up until now they have both been well behaved and well socialised and whilst not bosom buddies, got along very well. I have now started to feed the terrier in a closed room and leave him there until he has finished. The old girl is food obsessed but is on a strict diabetic diet, which is well controlled and her weight is perfect. I will let you know how we go.Thankyou.
  17. My small male desexed terrrier has started to growl and attack my old female spoodle. He is 9, she is 13 and has lived with us for 3 years. It was just growling for some months and related to food initially, but of recent weeks it has gone onto the terrier trying to stop the old girl coming into the loungeroom, or if she pases him while he is sitting in his basket in the other rooms of the house. I ensure there is not food put down to cause any arguments. They otherwise get on very well. When travelling in the car, out on their walks. The old girl does steal his dinner if the oportunity presents itself, so I have to guard the food until he is finished eating. The female is submissive in the beginning but has started to defend herself , while I am racing to pull them apart. I have tried the spray water bottle when the trrier starts to growl, slapping the floor with a rolled up newspaper, loud noises, anything to distract him.Chastising him when he starts to growl. All to no avail.Tonight was the worst it has been and they were full on before I had a chance to come from another room to pull him off her.It is a little like a girly fight, not seemingly serious, until tonight. So far, thank God, neither have been hurt. Now I am concerned that I should not leave them in the house together to go out at all.I work from home, so am here the greater part of the time. They get two long walks a day. I am also concerned as the terrier is sitting in his basket in the lounge room, forever looking to check on the doorway for when the girl is coming and he now seems anxious and stressed. He weighs 4kg and she weighs 11.5 kg. Any suggestions please.
  18. I find I need to bomb our house, works well, and gets rid of the roaches too!! I am interested in trying apple cider vinegar too, but at what dilutio rate do I use? I have switched to Advantage, and it seems to be working okay. I, too , made the mistake and bought Sentinel , but found out after I had opened it and used one tablet, it wasnt going to be the answer.Costly mistake, $84 odd. I use capstar too, when needed, but found it more economical if I buy the packet size for big dogs and break in half for my dogs equivalent dose.
