Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)
lappiemum replied to Joel's topic in General Dog Discussion
LOL They may look impressive coat wise, but Lappies are NOT high maintenance. They were bred as working and herding dogs - there is no time for grooming when out herding reindeer in the north of Finland! -
Especially the Lappie puppies.......!

Help With Breed Selection (formerly: Gsp Vs. English Pointer)
lappiemum replied to Joel's topic in General Dog Discussion
Have you considered Finnish Lapphunds? They will keep up with your kelpie, but are not as over the top as other working dog breeds. Very social, friendly and intelligent. Easy to train. temperament wise, you can have personalities that are a bit more zoomie, or you can have the ultra laid back versions Grooming is not an issue, they have a double coat which is insualated so its warm in winter and regulates their body heat in summer. They shed once or twice a year. Coat is very easy to maintain, a 10min brush once a week is fine. Medium sized dog that is suited to farm or suburban life. Check out the Finnish Lapphund thread here of DOL dog breeds 101. This is a pic of my cream boy - I should mention that lappies come in a wide range of canine colours! -
And don't forget little Alera will be there too - puppy cuddles!!!

Be careful what you wish for, you haven't met my Rott'n ones yet You might just change your mind Sounds good to me!! LOL

Hi Guys- Just checked out the weather forecast - it won't be perfect, but we should be ok: Sunday: Becoming cloudy. Patchy rain later in the day. Winds northerly and light increasing to northerly up to 30 km/h during the morning. Min: 5°C Max: 15°C UV: Low

If you put up a post here on DOL I'm sure someone will know something!!

Welcome Dobesrock- Husbands and kids are more than welcome Your boy sounds like he is a typical excitable teenager!LOL He is more than welcome, and if it turns out that the play is getting a bit rough we can seperate a few of the dogs - there are plenty of runs, and usually we split ourselves up fairly naturally anyway (some in the lagoon pool, some in the main run, others in the sand or agility runs).

I'm happy the Rotties will be there. Boofhead needs a few more manners drilled into him!!
-
Jump on the city link and it should take you about 30-40mins. ;)

Lol sorry but I thought they were such cuties I had to share! If I get a chance to take more I'll post them up here!
-
And Miss Alera, Evolving's baby (from the same litter as the cream baby) and practising her stack....LOL
-
I took a couple of pics of Janoby's little cream Lappie girl yesterday - and thought I would share these outside the spitz forum, because she is sooooo cute! Have some very cute ones of Evolving's new baby to add as well! :D (the excuse being I've got to practice with the new camera - am still learning how to drive it)!
-
No recorded cases of this. The blue is a dilution of the black, just with an extender gene. I've got a few articles on it someplace - will see if I can dig them up.
-
That looks like it was lots of fun for Elbie!LOL
-
I like that one too. I've discovered that its hard to take pics of a black dog when the lighting is crap and I don't like using the flash! here's another one, less successful but I like it anyway

Hey guys- I have recently bought my first DSLR camera, a Pentax K7 which I am just loving I've never had a DSLR before (just the point and shoots) so this is a bit of a learning curve! i'm doing a camera course in the next month, but in the mean time I've been playing, so thought I would share some of my first pics. There are taken in low light conditions with a sigma 18 - 200mm lens, I have another lens that is shorter but yet to play with that yet. i know a few are a bit out of focus, that's the bit I'm working on!LOL

Anyone Bought One Of These Before?

My boy is 21kgs, my new trolley which is aluminium - but well built! - will take him, as well as another dog (16kg) and anything else I load up. My old cheap e-bay rip off was ok if he was just sitting in it, but don't try pushing him in it!LOL -
I just bought a pentax k7 - it has a great feel and is weather proofed, which is great when taking pics out on wet and soggy show rings! LOL I'm still learning how to drive it, but its my first DSLR and I'm very happy I also got a free lens, but I bought my main lens. If you get a chance to handle one I def recommend it. eta some pics - these are beginner pics, but I'm happy. They were taken without a flash in low light conditions

Don't touch it with a barge pole! Sorry, but I have one - and I've just gone out and bought a much better one because that one is so bad! Let me list the problems: wheels come off - especially if you need to go over bumpy ground. I lost one in Ballarat showground carpark. wheels bend - especially if you are pushing it with a dog inside! pins holding the top come out. have lost one, somewhere in a ring in victoria the top cover board warps aluminium is cheap and not well constucted whole thing is rickety and wobbles when my dogs stand on the board when I'm grooming bolt doesn't always slide cleanly across is a COW to push! and regularly gets stuck on anything other than smooth concrete NOT worth the money! Here is a pic of my new trolley - which I LOVE and is made by a guy in Geelong. Yes, its more expensive but it will last me the next 15years - and while its heavier, its far easier to push around! It has phenumatic tyres and fold down handles too -
Touchy Subject But Need Advice Or Help.

Before PTS, at least have an expereinced canine behviourist look at the pup. If there is absolutely no hope, then yes, PTS is the best option. However, i wouldn't want to be making that decision unless all other resonable avenues had been considered. And time is of the essence, she should get it done asap. -
LOL - I have a couple of sticky hair rollers in my house for moulting season. I wouldn't recommend a Lappie, not on the basis of moulting (most breeds will shed) but because its going to be predominately an outside dog. Lappies need to be with their people - they are very family orientated and social. I would be concerned that any breed left on its own for extended periods of time may develop seperation anxiety related behaviours. Walking alone is not enough, they need mental stimulation as well. Good luck to your friend. eta - I should clarify, Lappie are fine to be on their own for periods of time, just not that they should be outside for most of the time.
