  1. Marlin lorves fish, but only if it is covered in yummy yoghurt :D Comes back for seconds then
  2. BCPuppy- the collars and mats that Dyzney imports are from Polar Products :D Oops, sorry Dyzney, didnt mean to tread on toes. Polar Products have emailed me to put me straight, also they had charged incorrect postage, should have been $12. My apologies.
  3. Have a look at www.polar-products.com - in the US but prices are very good. I have ordered a couple and will let you know what they are like when I get them. Postage was very reasonable too, only $6.80. With the dollar exchange rate being so good at the moment they work out pretty reasonable.
  4. I click as soon as she is finished, I do softly praise her as she is weeing, but before using the clicker she would finish weeing and then wander off before I got to her with praise/ treat, so I dont think she was associating the treat with doing the deed, she didnt like me being close to her when she was weeing so my timing just wasnt good enough. Only started using the clicker about 10 days ago and I am amazed at how all of the training is so much more positive, she seems to understand much quicker and with less confusion. IMO Whatever works, each pup is different.
  5. We didnt crate either, she had a crate but preferred sleeping under a table. Marlin still has the odd lapse, maybe every couple of days. Only wee, no poo for 6 weeks now. Seems to be when there are more interesting things going on and she doesnt like to miss anything She has a dog door and generally takes herself out, I do go with her much of the time and have started click rewarding, which seems to reinforce things, I hope anyway. I dont have to take her out at night anymore, she takes herself. Her biggest problem is she gets excited when we come home, or meeting new people and does the submissive wee & roll over thing, which I dont really have a problem with, we make sure the greeting is outside, better than jumping on everyone I think ;) I am confident she will eventually 'get it' then I can put all my rugs back.
  6. My OH makes his own jerky(for human consumption) regularly and his tips are : Experiment cutting different thicknesses, he has a cheap meat slicer to do the job, and cuts at around 3-4mm, too thin and it ends up too crunchy, too thick and doesnt dry properly, hence does tend go off quicker Slicing is much easier if meat still slightly frozen For long term storage we cryvac or freeze small amounts Ensure meat is cool before you bag it or you will get condensation and will go off quickly Make sure you rotate the trays on your dehydrator during drying, makes things more even, also turning the meat occasionally helps If you marinate your meat, let it air dry a little before putting in dehydrator, we use old oven racks and allow the excess liquid to drip on paper, just keep the furry ones away! Timing is just a case of testing frequently, remembering it will dry a little on cooling :D Yard sales are great for buying bargain dehydrators, our last two were under $10 cheapies but work great Our next experiment will be with some yellowfin tuna we caught a while back, will let you know how we go Bound to drive the hairy legged one mad as she loooves fish
  7. Marlin cant make up her mind where to sleep! Started off in a washing basket beside me for first few days, then on floor beside me, usually on my clothes she dragged off the chair Completely avoided any bed at night, just uses them in the daytime, crate bed is purely for eating on, outside trampoline for relaxing (daytime sleeping) rest of time is on the tiles in the living area. Lately she has been not coming to bedroom until wee small hours, or not at all, guess she is growing up, doesnt need mum unless the wind blows or something scares her Although last night she decided to jump on us around 11.30, time to play
  8. Dont know if it is of any help, Marlin had horrible rash on her tummy, was some time before I realised that the Rheo she loved hiding in was related to wandering jew Poor baby, found that dusting her frequently with curash powder helped heaps. Cleared up as soon as I ripped out all the offending plants, trouble is they are about the only ground cover I can grow
  9. I would introcude it slowly as too much in one go may give him the runs. maybe only a tablespoon or 2 to start off with Agree with that! I gave my 11 wk old BC about 1/4 tin and regretted it for the rest of the night and most of the next day. Havnt been game to repeat the experience yet.
  10. My butcher does pet mince which is mainly tongue and all the scraps minced together. Yum
  11. OOh I love this discussion. Neats, I am pretty new to raw, and puppy I have found it doesnt really take a lot of time, just have to be organised., helps if you have a freezer. I buy bulk, split into smaller bags, meat into handfulls, bones into twos or more, chop up offal & freeze in ice cube trays. Take out enough for say two days at a time and shove in a plastic container to defrost, weigh the amount if you need to until you are confident you have an eye for it. When defrosted, throw in some vegies, egg, oil, garlic, anything else you desire quick stir and voila! Toss a bone as you leave for work and you are done. If you forget to defrost just get out a frozen bone! Just make sure plastic container is labelled DOG or someone else may decide to cook it for tea ;)
  12. Would appreciate any opinions My BC puppy is almost 10 weeks old. Breeder had her on dried puppy, with cooked minced beef or chicken & rice three times a day. She has taken to raw very well, I started with minced chicken frames with rice, been slowly reducing the rice, breeder also advised some raw veggies, carrots, peas, creamed corn, cooked pasta. Getting rid of the creamed corn, swear it re-assembles into whole corn on the way through :p Mixed in some raw pet mince, all good, next is minced kangaroo. Bone every day, chicken necks and lamb rib so far. Wings are next. Only supplement is omega oil and odd spoonfull of yoghurt. Also has had a tiny piece of kidney and teaspoonfull of liver. She weighs just over 4kg, and is getting roughly 400gm minced + bones per day. Only worry is she hardly touches the dried food (same she had at breeders), it is available all the time, a couple of mouthfulls a day is all she has, tried mixing in with the raw but she leaves it if she can Should I maybe cut back on the raw and give one meal of dry? Can see myself being left with 10kg of dried puppy food, haha. I have lots of rib bones in the freezer, chicken wings & drumsticks, chicken livers, kidneys, beef liver, turkey necks, chicken frames, heaps of minced roo, all yet to be added. (I live remote area and dont get to go shopping too often ) Oh and she has had fish one night, live by the coast so fish no problem. Just looking for reassurance I guess, that I am doing the right thing.

  14. Been lurking here for a while. What a great topic Learning heaps from you guys. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of a BC puppy from Rowesdale BCs, only 4 weeks to go. Have been doing heaps of research on different diets. I am leaning to RMB. Several reasons, apart from it just makes sense to me, I am in remote WA and the local supermarket has a very limited range and expensive as well, the butcher is not too bad and I will be able to work with him. I am in the habit of shopping around every 6 months so have a couple of large freezers at home, OH is looking very strangely at my shopping list for the next trip, think he thinks he is going to be on the same diet as the dog We also have access to fresh fish and road kill (kangaroo). Is there anything I should be aware of before feeding these? I guess kangaroo is likely to have ticks etc, shoudl I freeze first? Very nervous about fish, all those little bones. Any thoughts would be welcome.
