  1. this should have all been sorted out before breeding took place. Now it's a case of she said/he said. Sometimes it depends on why an AI was needed. Was the dog not co operative or the bitch or both? Personal choice of one owner? $500 or $5,000 and do you know for sure how many pups are coming? Cause if it's only $500 that means $2,00 to rear 5 pups properly. Extra food for the bitch, food for the pups, microchips and vaccinations. Worming. It all adds up and heavens above if there is a c-section needed or an illness to Mum or pups and vet visits needed.

  2. agree with the others, a new vet asap. I am so sorry this has happened to them both and you too as their friend. Please help your friend to report this.

Personally I'd get someone to carry the dog to the car and then drive to the work place and see if the dog is ok there. Out via the back door if possible. My experience with trauma was the dogs didn't want to go near where the trauma happened. One was a new foster who had a terrible accident in my back yard. Took weeks before he would go freely in there. Had to be toileted etc out the front yard, then on lead to walk down the opposite side to where the accident happened, then off lead. The other was attacked by a dog while out for a run and we couldn't go near that spot for some months.

Hey Deeds,  How coooool that you came across a new variety like the Sheepoodle! It's always exciting to learn about different crossbreeds. I've heard of Bordoodles before (Border Collie x Poodle), but this is the first time I've heard about Sheepoodles (Old English Sheepdog x Poodle). What an interesting mix!!! Really!!!

Horrible mix, think of the coat problems.

It's amazing how creative people can get with breed names. It sounds like the owners were quite creative in coming up with "Sheepoodle" to reflect the mix of Old English Sheepdog and Poodle. It'd be fascinating to see how these two breeds combine in terms of appearance, temperament, and traits.

    They are not a breed.

Thanks for sharing your encounter! It's always fun to hear about the unique and wonderful dogs that people have in their lives. If anyone else has seen or has experience with Sheepoodles, it'd be great to hear more about them!

This is a purebred forum so not likely to hear anymore.

  4. I have to say, with all the females dogs I have owned, that I never had a problem except with one girl from GAP ( Greyhound Adoption Program )who caused me to take my smaller crossbreed girl, to the vets 3 times. I couldn't commit to keeping them totally apart for the rest of their lives so the grey was returned with many tears. She was so perfect for me. But not for my dog. The Grey went on to live a lovely life as an only dog.

I had a GSD girl who was less then thrilled with other girls too close to her which did improve when desexed but at home never a problem with the others. Just out and about. And never a problem in competitions.

Seem to be a lot of this sort of cross breed around , Suppose people can call there dog , an oodle , a scoodle , a sheepadoodle or a goodle , call them what they want its there dog , But to me its a MONGREL  or a bitza , , or in some cases you just can't tell so its a heinz 57

and nothing wrong with a good ole heinz 57, just stop with the stupid names

I met a silver and tan Weimaraner. You had to be standing in the right light to be certain of his tan points. He was destined to be 'pet only'. Why?

Because the hallmark of the breed is their colour. Again you would have to ask a breeder who knows the history of the breed. Nothing wrong with pet only.

The Border Collie standard then, as now, simply said “White should never predominate.” However, in practice, breeders and judges were very finicky about markings. A friend got a puppy that was the pick of the litter conformation-wise because its breeder would not keep and show a puppy that did not have a full collar.

It would make sense to ensure that breed standards are consistent with genetics. I have never thought it reasonable that the Newfoundland standard allows 3 colours: black,

    brown

    white with black markings.

Why is white with brown markings not acceptable?

I see a fair few BC who don't have a full collar gaining their Championship titles.  As to the Newfoundland you'd have to ask breeders who know their history

  8. Depending on the breed yeah a lot of breeders of smaller dogs prefer to keep them a little bit longer.

If they are ANKC breeders then the papers are supposed to go with the pup at time of sale. However I did breach that requirement with my last litter by requesting that the male pup stayed in my name until 12 months of age in case I wanted to collect semen form him, then he was to be signed over in full. All spelled out in the contract and fully explained. As soon as I decided I would not be doing this papers were sent. Owner was a pet person, not a breeder.

So up to you if you are happy to accept the contract. Make sure you change the microchip over to your name. And if it's a large breed wait before desexing.

  9. I have a nice little app called easy thumbnails which I love, very easy to use.

I was watching Ian Dunbar back in the 90's so haven't seen the son in action. Have you looked at Daily Dog Star? Lots of free stuff on there, last time I looked. Got to sift through it but some interesting articles.

You've said you can have trouble with your mobility, if your yard is suitable the Two Toy Game might be worth looking up. You stand in the middle, the dog does all the work .

  10. I had to laugh at your post, it sounds so like a typical new puppy scenario. It's such hard work. Have you second guessed yourself yet and wondered what the hell you did?

I think we need photo's of your girls.

Ahhh you think there would have been times the pups really escalated with each other when playing/play fighting went on too long?

Absolutely. Sophi has some "strong" breeding behind her and they were all allowed to be little ferals. Sounds like you are on top of it though.

  12. as one of 14 puppies I'm not at all surprised Sophi was over the top with Lulu  Has she been to the vet yet for a check up? I would guess she might have a pretty heavy worm burden. Puppies are exhausting that's for sure.

  13. so sorry your first pup got meningitis but try not to let that influence you too much. It will be hard but you were very unlucky.

while little enough I carried a pup to the car etc. Once too heavy they were on lead. Though as my car was parked in a fully fenced front yard I just let them loose there. I think a good puppy school would be great. They do get to see other dogs and you get to hear other owners. If the private has other age appropriate pups then that would be great as well. My view is, all doggy schools, are there to help you train your dog and it is not a free for all. Ideally I have always wanted my dogs to ignore other dogs when we are out and about and not to see them as a play toy and start ignoring you.

Can we get a photo of your new family member?

I think it works out to be $2 per tablet and that’s from my vet so for both meds just for Abby it’s $26 per week which doesn’t sound much but on top of everything else it’s another expense we don’t need.

I'd be finding another source of meds.
