Lets Talk About Recall
bedazzledx2 replied to ILoveBoundaries's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Good God No!!!!! If you follow the instructions you will find there is no need to go to that extreme. Also you will find at the top of the page that this method is under review and to please keep that in mind when you read it. I would think that refers to the shock collar. This was written many, many years ago and Shirley was well before her time with this method. She broke things down and split when every one else was still lumping. I'm pretty sure she has been unwell....I haven't been on her list for a few years and I haven't seen a lot of change on these pages. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!!! It is an extremely good method and worth doing properly. Did you use a shock collar on them? I don't have a problem with the appropriate use of a shock collar but I do think anyone who is not experienced should seek the help and direction of a professional when using one. And her brag at the start about a 15 week old puppy recalling from other dogs, isn't that fantastic and not a great example imo. At that age, the pups aren't yet pushing the boundaries. My puppy also had perfect recall at that age, it is only now we are having some slight issues (6 months) so its back to the long line. -

Lets Talk About Recall

Pretty much the same system for free http://www.shirleychong.com/keepers/Lesson6.html I have used this system for all my dogs after my first dog gave me the furry finger!!!! Just remember the recall command you will use under stress should be the same as what you teach. It becomes a conditioned response and the dog (if trained correctly and thoroughly) will turn and come without thought. -
I never used to allow dogs on furniture....until I got Brookie! Somehow he managed to snuggle up and I relented. The funny thing is that Jasper my BC was never allowed on the lounge or bed....but.....when I'm not around he sneaks up. I have invited him up on the lounge when I'm sitting there but obviously early training sticks...not when I'm around!!!!! I now have a lounge cover

Thanks Aidan Some of these are seriously scary!!!! There are a couple of women's vests that I think I'll try (but only for dog training I think! ) http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/browse/clot...Y_SEQ_104058180 http://www.cabelas.com/product/Clothing/Wo...WTz_stype%3DGNP http://www.gundogsupply.com/game-totes-and...e-lanyards.html http://www.gundogsupply.com/mother.html Some of that stuff ^ may look a bit too obviously like hunting gear to wear around town, but it has plenty of pockets
-
Do you have a link Aiden? Not that I need to spend anymore money on dog stuff but..... If you put a butter/margarine container inside the bum bag it holds it open much better and is easier to clean I'm after a vest for summer and plan on checking out outdoor stores and fishing shops when I get time The American hunting suppliers have the best stuff, especially for warm weather. With the exchange rate you could probably buy 10 for AUD$1!
-
I use a bum bag from a cheapo shop and sling it round to my back and leave the zip open so its easy to dive my hand in. For most training I try to use a vest with pockets but that's a bit hard in the height of summer!

I'm another one who uses this and NILIF to the degree I need it. It depends on your dog and your relationship and what you are wanting to achieve. My BC was a bit of a law unto himself at one stage in his early training and this type of restriction worked well for him. I didn't go the full deal though as it wasn't necessary for us at that time. -

Mine have too much hair too but a glimmer of bling is better than nothing!!!! Ooooh, I love a bit of bling! Those collars look great! Shame I have such hairy dogs that you can't even tell if they are wearing a collar or not :D

Playing Tug With A Dog
bedazzledx2 replied to Mason_Gibbs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I rewarded with food. Remember to split the behaviour down to its smallest components just like dumbbell training. The biggest test for him once the behaviour was on cue, was for him to tug for breakfast! Very hard for my foody boy but once that hurdle was over he really understood. I have done some shaping but none with the tug or dumbell, I was usually using a ball to play with before training but decided to try tug so that he is with me and not running after a ball away from me, I have only being trying to tug for a few weeks now and everytime he misses and gets my hand I give it up for a week because I dont feel like getting scratched etc again. Mason loves food it is what makes his world go round and he would do anything for it which is why I have been working on jackpots with him and I use that as a reward very often too. I will definitely try shaping the tug behaviour I want with the clicker though, did you use food as a reward after the click or a game? -
Playing Tug With A Dog
bedazzledx2 replied to Mason_Gibbs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Have you ever played any shaping games with him Mason? I had pretty much the same issue with my boy in that he would give in and not play or if he did he would crocodile me!!!! I didn't play tug with him for years for that reason and he is VERY food motivated so I really didn't need it. I was given a challenge to teach him to play tug a while ago so took it up and shaped it just like dumbbell but without the throw. I didn't wave it around in his face, I used a clicker and did it step by step and in the process taught him exactly where to place his mouth. I also learned how to present it to him for my safety. Your instructor (yes she is very clued up!!!) can explain it to you or you can email me and I can go through it with you. I now have huge enthusiasm for the tuggy with good manners as well and it doesn't take very long to teach. Just another way to go about things -
Thanks Ness! It was our first warm day so pretty pleased with him as he won 3 out of 3 and he just got better with a 198 in Open which was very nice Huge congratulations to Ptolomy and Soggy...way to go!!! She is such a star and so is her Mum!!!! Yay for great positive training!!!!

Its open to all...just hosted by the Rotti club.

Congratulations Valley!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!

The bacon and egg burger were really yummy last time! That's what we'll be having as I can't be bothered getting up at sparrow fart just to make lunch! At least the temperature has been revised to 28 rather than 31 :D
-
Wise words there Mrs Rusty Bucket :D The most important thing is to concentrate and try to do your part as well as you can. That way you give your dog half a chance and hopefully it will all come together!!! Oh...and remember to breath!!!!!! :D
-
Ahhh!!!! WIND!!!! What fun!!!! Be prepared for anything and good luck!!!! :D Maybe you need to try wine BEFORE your next trial!!! I'm a bit nervous about trialling tonight... got some crazy wind happening and am worried that it may cause Ella some trouble with her seekback... I guess we'll see in a few hours!

New Obedience & Tracking Rules
bedazzledx2 replied to TerraNik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yep and it was SA who put that proposal up in the rules review!! I personally don't agree with it but that's what we've got! The original proposal was to ban it altogether but the way its written it now gives the judge a little latitude but i don't see you getting away with it easily. New rules state that you can be excused from the ring if you are thought to be training in the ring, so I'm not sure this plan will work out for you. Maybe you should be aiming in training to do everything you'd do in a trial, not the other way around? If you find your dog is being naughty in the ring, you can excuse yourself and not let your dog get away with it that way. Just a thought :D -
90cm is a nice length for trialling Should I get a lead longer that 750mm then?

Try the dog shop at Canine.

New Obedience & Tracking Rules
bedazzledx2 replied to TerraNik's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Not clever! The rules are quite clear about a distinct loop in the lead and for it to allow the dog freedom of movement. There's no shortcut for good training and it'll fall apart in Novice without the lead. At least they are only scraping through - I watched a CCD ring recently where dogs on tight leads were scoring in the 90s. Many held their leads in their right hands and then braced the lead against their left hip area. Also watched an experienced trialler correct a dog harshly in the figure 8 behind the judge's back. Same dog placed on a countback. -
The majority use a mat in the Eastern States for Scent Discrimination. We are blessed with nice grounds so don't need to worry about using one. I used to use a mat with Ruby (Kelpie) but it was a real pain as I was the only one using it and most clubs had theirs stored way deep in the bottom of the training box and many were mouldy and smelly...I used to bring my own. I vowed never to use one since those days!!!! The other thing I hate about using a mat is that the articles roll about when the dog steps on it and scented articles then touch unscented ones...my motto....KISS No mat ;) What mat? I have never seen a mat used in UD here :p Am I just really unobservant? vCBR, great that you enjoyed ACWA I will be there next week as long as one of my horses doesn't try and kill themself again
