  1. I know the saying, but my dogs would NEVER react that way if you startled them or woke them from sleep. I don't understand why aggression is excused just because a dog is sleeping or eating. If you are pack leader, the subordinate pack members (the dogs) should NEVER react in that manner. Just like if you stand on their foot by accident or something - my dogs would never ever do anything but cry or move away. Joelle, get him into training and let him know that you and your son are waaaaay above him in the pack!!
  2. I finally got a reply! LOL! I know they are busy, but after my first phone call, I was a little hesitant in calling again. Anyway, we'll see how we go.
  3. Well it has been a while, and still no reply to my email. I guess they don't want any new members.
  4. I am a member of Knox obedience and don't think anyone there does tracking. Haven't been for a long time though (my bad!) so I will ask around when I go back.
  5. Can someone give me some advice on how I can get into tracking? I started a topic about this ages ago but didn't recieve many (any?) responses! LOL! I am now seriously wanting to find out more. I recently spoke to someone who does it, just by chance, and she suggested I ring someone but when I did, the person was very strange and acted like it was all a big secret and I couldn't know anything about it! Anyway, I just found the tracking club website and have sent an email to the secretary, but if anyone can offer some more info I would appreciate it! I am in SE suburbs of Melbourne. Thanks!!
  6. Thanks so much to everyone who PM'd me - sorry I haven't had time to reply individually. The info is much appreciated and will hopefully save the life of a much-loved dog. Thanks again!!
  7. Can anyone recommend a great behaviouralist or dog trainer in Brisbane, especially one experienced with aggression. Thanks!
  8. I would put some more time into training her - training seems to give dogs confidence. My BC x was very fearful as a pup and it took 12 months of solid obedience and socialising to get her "right". Now you would never know. For a while, I would not use a pat for a reward. I have had to do this with my other dog because when you pat him, he goes nuts! So I just say "good boy" and thats enough for him. My trainer told me that you need to do this with some dogs because a pat is "too much". If that makes sense! As for her submission with other dogs, I don't think its too much of an issue. Just make sure other dogs don't take advantage of her submissiveness. Keep up with the training and socialising and I think you'll see her improve. How old is she BTW?
  9. I had one of my foster girl's desexed when she was coming into season (I didn't know she was and neither did the vet until he opened her up). She almost died on the table as they couldn't stop the bleeding. As a PP said, when in season the uterus is swollen and has a lot more blood pumping through it. Thankfully she was OK and the vets were very experienced, but she was quite weak for a few days afterwards and I would say she definitely took longer to recover than other dogs I have had done. Also, I doubt that the $10 rate would cover a bitch in season. The vets that will spey a dog in season often charge a lot more because it is more complicated surgery.
  10. My BC x is 6yrs old this year. Up until I got pregnant (and had some complications which meant I haven't been able to attend obedience) she was doing so well at obedience. She had just graduated into Class 4 (offlead stuff) and was really starting to get the hang of agility, which she loved. I am now so sore from being pregnant that I can barely walk the dogs, let alone do training with them. I know I only have a few weeks to go, but then I will have a newborn and I just don't know when I will be able to get back into it all. But I hate seeing her "talent" go to waste. She is such a smart dog and I just know she could do so well at agility, maybe even obedience if I really practised. How old do you think is too old to be pursuing all of this? Is 6.5yrs too old to pretty much start again with agility? She is a naturally fit, working type dog but I just worry about her hurting herself or just being beyond it.
  11. A lot of chicken shops sell the necks in 1kg bags for $1. You can also buy pet mince at the butchers which may be of better quality (but similar price) to pet mince bought at a produce store.
  12. As soon as she comes into season - so if she had her first season at five months, technically she could get pregnant at five months. It is not recommended that bitches have a litter until 18-24 months I believe. Just book her in when she is 5 or so months old and you should be fine.
  13. I believe spay incontinence can happen to dogs that are desexed at any age, but young dogs may be more prone to it. But I am pretty sure that spay incontinence happens fairly soon after the op, not years later when the dog is old?? Any old dog can become incontinent, desexed or not... I would wait until she is closer to 6 months though.
  14. Its up to you. How much chicken mince did you add to their food? I would try adding maybe a tbsp at a time. Do this for a few days, then gradually increase the amount. Hopefully their tummies will settle. If there is no reduction in greenhouse gases after two weeks (if you can last that long) then I would forget about it. Same with the vegies. Don't give too much or too many things at once. Start off with just carrot and only give them a few small pieces. If you want to try the gravy, give it a week or two before you start. And again, start off with very small amounts. Slowly, slowly is the golden rule when adjusting your dogs' diets!
  15. ROFL!! My in-laws dog gets scared when she farts! She lets one rip and then shoots off, looking behind her like "What the hell was that?". LOL! And when my mum's old dog farts, she looks around with this disgusted look on her face, then gets up and moves. Haha!
  16. My mum's 16yr old dog does this too. When she comes inside, she just can't settle. She will wander around aimlessly, go and lie down, then get up and start wandering again. Sometimes she will just stand in a doorway and stare into space. Her hearing and eyesight are also on the blink so not sure if its related. But she seems happy enough and never seems confused - she is just restless. I don't know if there is anything you can do, but as a PP said, omega fatty acids are supposed to help with mental functioning.
  17. I have found chicken can make my dogs gassy too. Don't know if its worth persevering or not! As for gravy, my dogs get a bit of gravy mixed in with their dryfood every night. Because your two are babies, I would make up a very weak batch of gravy (maybe 1tsp gravy powder to half a cup of water) and just add a bit to their biccies. Over time, you can make it a bit thicker if you want.
  18. My dogs have always had Supercoat or Bonnie and have always done well on it. My BC x had a super sensitive tummy when she was a puppy and we tried EVERYTHING in order to find something that didn't give her the runs. S/C was the only thing she could tolerate, so we switched our other dogs to it as well. Never had any problems with it. My dogs have nice shiny coats and the poops aren't too bad (as far as poop goes!).
  19. Woohoo!! Updating sig now... Thanks so much! You are a legend.
  20. Ooh Harminee, thanks for adding the dogs! Their names are Champa (the Lab x) and Maisie (the BC x). They are my naughty furkids! And the cats look AMAZING with those frames! I think I'm going to get them printed. Thanks for yours too Freckles!
  21. OMG that is so awesome! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of them all together!
  22. WOW! You guys are amazing! I have just flicked through most of this thread from page 1 and the pics are amazing! I have bookmarked all the links so I can have a go later. Just wondering though, does anyone want to make a siggy (or two - one of the cats, and one of the dogs) for me?? Pwetty pwease?? ETA: Here are some pics to play with if anyone can! I'm going to dig up some nice ones of my puppies... ETA again: I found some of my dogs but they are so small, and I can't find the originals!

    Humping

Some puppies are much more persistent with some behaviours than others unfortunately. I had a foster pup once who was a shocking mouther and it took weeks of being really firm to stop her. My dog is a jumper - even at 6yrs old now she still can't help herself sometimes and will try and jump up on you. She knows she isn't allowed to and only does a "half jump" (front legs down by her side, just enough off the ground so her head is level with your waist). Your pup sounds gorgeous and I'm sure she will get there.

    Humping

Rih & Jak, sometimes you have to be a bit firmer to stop them biting. If she starts to bite, try opening you hand wide, so she can't get a good grip. Really GROWL at her "NOOOO!!". Then get up and walk away. Keep trying this and see if it makes a difference. If not, I have found that with really insistent mouthers, squeezing their mouth shut or sort of "pinching" their top jaw when they grab your hand can work. Do the same thing though - say "NOOOO" in a really deep, growly voice and then squeeze. Again, get up and walk away. You need to make sure you say "no" before you squeeze. Eventually she will learn that when you say no, she had better stop mouthing or it will be uncomfortable for her. When she DOES let go of your hand, offer her a toy to play with instead. Good luck! ETA: Don't push her away when you are telling her off, or she might think its a game. Make sure YOU get up and leave. :D
  25. There should be an obedience school or trainer that you can go to before 6 months. Our local club accepts puppies from 12 weeks I believe. And the classes are much better run than the vet nurse ones. Good luck!
