  1. I would crate train her. At night, she can sleep in her crate and hopefully she won't toilet where she sleeps. You also need to be very consistent - if you can't watch her 100%, put her outside to avoid accidents. Every time you think of it, take her outside and say "toilet" or something like that and go mad with praise if she goes. Has she been desexed?
  2. I wouldn't until she is at least 12 months old - let her free run but don't throw balls or encourage her to run/chase/stop quickly, etc.
  3. We had a foster JRT who had this problem. Had to put back in place by a vet. He was a 2-3yo entire dog though and the vet said desexing should solve the problem.
  4. I am so sorry Ruffles. He was with you for such a long and special time. He is now free of pain, and I'm sure he will keep watching over you. Sending you big hugs. You did a very brave thing today.
  5. It would depend on the individual pup, the breed and also whether or not its desexed. Entire dogs are more likely to start wanting to look for a mate. Some breeds are more slow maturing (eg my bc cross still acts like a puppy at 7 years old!).
  6. Any animal or person can die under anaesthetic. Young or old, it is nothing to do with health or age. I think it is very uncommon but it just happens and there is nothing anybody can do. Its nobody's fault, its just one of those shitty things. I am sorry.
  7. Definitely NO COB. Corn is OK, but the cobs are deadly. I remember seeing an episode of an animal rescue show where a dog had died because of a blockage caused by a corn cob.
  8. He is probably just getting a bit startled when he wakes up, and goes on the defensive. Is he a nervous pup at all? I wouldn't be too worried.
  9. You need to get the dog into training. Take it to obedience, learn how to be the leader, teach the dog what it is allowed to do.
  10. He might also be very upset about being moved around so much. Give him time to settle. Get some basic obedience happening (practise at home, and if possible, take him to a local club). Get him in some sort of routine. Help him to understand that you are the leader, and that you are a kind and consistent leader. Keep the boys seperated for now and take things slowly. Good luck.
  11. I believe that free-running is OK, you just shouldn't encourage it. Also, if he is a smaller dog, there is less chance he will do any damage.
  12. We had an influx of people a while ago wanting their short-haired dogs clipped! Apparently they all watched some TV show where it was mentioned, and we had about 10 people ring up that week and book in their dogs. My MIL did a few I think, and I clipped a Kelpie x and a Labrador (who actually had it done regularly after that, every 3 months or so!!). Of course, being short-haired, we had to clip them super short (usually a 10 blade).
  13. I would say you should be careful with all breeds when they are young, but bigger breeds just carry more risk. Most people recommend free exercise - so let them play in the backyard, but don't encourage them to run or throw balls, etc.
  14. She sounds fearful to me. Like you say, when she sees dogs at a distance she is overly defensive to try and 'scare them off'. Get professional help as fearful dogs can very easily become aggressive dogs.

    Duke

I am so sorry Teebs. He was a gorgeous dog and I am sure he will look out for you all from the Bridge. RIP Duke.
  16. I am fairly sure if its Advantage you can use it on your dog. I know you can use dog advantage on cats so surely it would work in reverse! I believe the only differences are the dosage so you might want to look into that.
  17. Just have to ask, how do you prevent a bitch getting pyo if you leave her entire her whole life and don't breed her?
  18. Poor baby - he might walk funny for a few days!!
  19. There is an emergency vet in Blackburn, think its just called the Animal Emergency Centre. Its on Blackburn Rd, not far past Burwood Hwy intersection.
  20. Are you sure you weren't thinking of KC (kennel cough)? The vacc for that only covers a few strains of the virus and many dogs that are vacc against KC will get it anyway.
  21. When they were little, I used to tie them to a chair or table next to their bed. Every time they got up, I would say "On your bed" and put them back on their bed.
  22. Oh no, I am so sorry. RIP little Thomas. Don't blame yourself, these things just happen sometimes. I am so sorry.
  23. Cats do cough with some heart conditions - HCM is one of them I believe. I would be getting the cat checked ASAP.
  24. Its horrible, isn't it. We had a few ferals like that. One was so bad it took me about 2.5 hours to clip her. She was totally wild. Why? Well she had never been clipped as a puppy and was now 2yrs old. She went absolutely psycho. I went and got the owners (we were mobile groomers) and made them hold her so they could see how bad she was. We did her again once after that and then never from them again. Poor dog.
