  1. A Whippet or Fox Terrier would be a good match for the Jack russell. Also depends on if you need the dog to do other work apart from rabbits and being a companion.
  2. A Whippet or Deerhound would take care of the rabbits. Also Kelpie or Border collie will train very well. take a look at pounds and shelters;there are always working dogs there that would do well on a property.
  3. Do they realize that puppies whimper at night and poo everywhere. They have a newborn baby who will already do that. These people are under stress ;2 kids ;4 cats ;needing to move again as the house is sold. When people are under stress they sometimes do crazy things ,like buy a pup,to try to feel better or focus on something other than their problems.Perhaps they need professional counseling.
  4. Sometimes you just have to tell people straight whats what for there own good;and in this case the welfare of the dog and the kids. These people are not mature so sit down with them and tell them that you are concerned about them as they are your friends; and then tell them honestly and calmly what you think. Yes they may not like it;but it may shock some sense into them.If they are true friends they will listen and value what you say. This approach worked for me with my brother when i had some long time issues with him. good luck.
  5. Found this list of "Top ten breeds for families with young children" Golden retriever;Labrador;Poodle;Irish setter;Vizsla;Newfoundland;Collie;Bull terrier;Beagle; Bulldog. Of these .I like vizslas and bullterriers. What are smooth collies like for shedding ?..... Forgot to mention the Brittany sounds great.
  6. Very sorry,Poor Tip.At least he had some love and comfort before he went.
  7. I have known a few through training and I have a friend who breeds them and the ones I have met have all been lovely dogs, but they are still a bit too close to being a designer breed for my liking. I'd rather have the security and support that comes with getting a purebred dog from an ethical and registered breeder EFS Thanks ;Good to know;some of the sites look very flash ;some people may assume they are a pure breed.
  8. Are they a proper breed yet? What about an english springer spaniel i love the brittany i met a few at the brisbane Ekka they seem like lovely dogs It looks like they are heading towards it.They may have a different name then.I like Springer and brittany .What would be the grooming requirements for them ?Thanks.
  9. Aussie Bulldog ?I like the look of them;don't know much about them though.
  10. Beagle. Robust active good with children. Boston terrier;Bulldog;Boxer.
  11. Yes that;s a big factor.Have been waiting for the granddaughter to start school before i get a dog;She starts next year.Think i have been reading too much and will take a break.I hope Haven has some luck finding a breed that suits her.Its not always easy to match your lifestyle to a breed when you have to also consider others in the household with different likes and needs .Thankyou.
  12. What they don't tend to share is their reliability with other dogs. Chessies can be sharp. That's a shame ,good looking dogs though; Thanks. Now i,m confused.Just read a dog info site that describes chesapeakes as Friendly to other dogs and placid with people. How am i to learn about dog breeds if i get different information ,perhaps it;s a case of info overload.
  13. Italian greyhound, Whippet, Australian terrier .
  14. I agree,Families were big then often 6 or more children. Dogs were treated like dogs not babies.
  15. I also grew up in the 60;There was a kelpie x that came to school every lunch time and played ball on the oval and got fed leftover lunches. Another time 3 wandering dogs came around and one bit a little boy. After that the principal banned dogs from the school grounds and the ranger was called if any strays were around. There was an old labrador that did the trip down the street to the butcher for a bone.We had Alsations in the street that never left there yard and i did worry about them escaping. When i walked to school with my brother I was always bailed up by a neighbours Basenji that was often on the loose. It would put it;s paws on my shoulders and would growl if i moved .My brother just 7 year old had to chase the dog off.The Basenji killed every cat in the street, including our 3 kittens. After that my dad and half the street complained, and the dog was got rid of.I am glad we have stricter laws about keeping dogs these days much safer i think.

  17. Also consider Chesapeake bay retriever. Evidently they share some traits of the curly and flat coats.
  18. Italian spinone, doberman;weimaraner;dalmation;boxer;???Grasping at straws now,out of ideas.
  19. I don't think Airedales are very imposing. They look like big teddy bears and I have never heard a more sissy bark (unless that is just mine). Yuna sounds a lot more tougher Well i just adore Airedales, Teddy bears alright, very huggable.I would be wary of one barking at someones gate.
  20. Was thinking low shed good with kids .I am reading a lot about dog breeds;every book says something different.I am learning more from this forum and the nice doggy people here.cheers.
  21. Yes i agree with poodle fan.I grew up with a g,s,pointer great dog, Look at curly coated retrievers;Airedale;Boxer.Try Showdog.com dog breed selector.and K9 Country K9 considerations breed selector tool.
  22. Report this to the local council. It may be a small child who gets frightened or worse;by this dog.A fine or pound fee will sort these people out.
  23. Well yes and no. when i was 10 years old my parents would not get my dog desexed;i did keep asking them to.She had puppies to a kelpie x labrador. She was a cavalier x something.3 of her pups were small ;but one was much bigger.I remember feeling really sorry for her giving birth to such a big pup.;even at that young age i felt it was wrong to put her through that. These people are adults and should know better. The big pup went to the people that gave me the mother dog. she grew the size of a labrador;much to everyones surprise. one small pup went to a neighbour and he grew to be smaller than his mother.
