  1. Yes i remember Poppy, wonderful to see her looking well.Hope she finds the best home ever.
  2. Thankyou everyone.Very interesting and informative.I see how getting together with other breeders at shows or other groups is of great benefit. Some years ago my friend got a Husky pup who grew into a very good dog.His breeder was so impressed with him that she 'borrowed' him back for some shows, and he did very well.He then went on to be used at stud for a while, then went back to being a family pet.
  3. Just wanted to say; What a gorgeous gorgeous dog he is.
  4. Thankyou,spankytansy and woofen.I understand a bit more now.
  5. You will find people on here that will help you.You just have to hang in there.I still find this forum a bit daunting at times but i am still asking questions,You seem like a nice caring dog owner otherwise you would not be here asking for help.I think you are on the right track so far.Good luck with your dogs .
  6. I am fairly new to the forum and joined to increase my knowledge of dogs in general.Often people are advised to show their dogs before breeding them. Can you explain why this is an advantage to breeding,Also if you were to get dogs from a breeder who's parents were show quality, wold this be enough to start breeding dogs of a good standard. Can you breed good dogs without being involved with showing them. This is just something i am curios about .I am not interested in breeding dogs myself .
  7. When you breed any animal you should have a love and respect for the animal and be responsible for their health and welfare,At the very least research the basics of breeding in books internet and then build knowledge from other more experienced in the field. There are always things you learn from experience as well.Anyone who will not take time to seek out knowledge or take on advise from others should reconsider breeding animals.
  8. Wonderful news,looking good.
  9. Yes ,i could have told them that years ago.I am allergic to some dogs and less with others, less fur has nothing to do with it .For me it's the smell of the dog that sets it off. Also male dogs have a much stronger odor than females to me.I tested good with a female Vizsla but the male had avery strong odor that i reacted strongly to.It was the same with poodles.Weimaraners both sexes were very good. You have to spend time with different breeds to find which ones are ok for you.
  10. Yes;Do not let him touch sniff or even look like he wants to play with the chooks. When my hubby had the flightless bird on his lap he growled at our dog and would not let her come near him and the bird. When a top dog in the pack has a bone,he will stand over it posture and growl;then the other dogs will know it's his and back off. When we had our budgie breeding room attached to the house,at first our dog would sniff the cages and get excited.Every time she did i would get between her and the cage lean forward and growl;Ah no Grrrrrr.and stare at her.If she tried to ignore me i would block her path and growl again until she backed off and lowered her head in submission.Over time she learned to ignore the birds .She would patrol the bird room and aviary at night and chased out cats, never killed them, she would see them to the fence sit and wait till they jumped over then jump at the fence and bark to tell them not to come back. She also guarded the bird room and aviary from rats, she did kill them.Try the Ahh Grrrrrrrrr.with your dog when you see him stare at a chook and looks like he wants to play with it or tries to touch it .You must be consistent and watchful of his behavior near the chooks. He is still young and will learn but it may take a few months not weeks.
  11. I think this could be of help or relate to your situation..........When we got our rescue wolfhound x bullterrier aged 10 months. She would chase and kill wild birds like rossellas, doves ,pidgeons etc .One day caught her grabbing a bird and yelled at her.She stopped but had the tail feathers in her mouth so i took them out of her mouth and told her off again,The bird went under a bush.My hubby got the bird and sat it on his lap and patted it and said to her no bird,She looked bemused. He walked around with the bird for a while then put it back in the bush. For the next few weeks the bird trotted around our yard past the dog and our cat that wasn't fussed about catching birds, until it's feathers grew back enough for it to fly away. After that if she went near birds in the yard i would yell no bird,She never killed another bird after that.I think we took ownership of the birds in a way so she saw them as ours and was to leave them.Later we went into breeding budgies and she would chase stray cats out of the yard and protected the aviary.Once a baby budgie escaped into a tree and she alerted me by running to the tree and staring up at it until i could see it and hosed it down.Maybe if you try to walk around with a chook so he can associate chooks as belonging to you it may help.
  12. I think ......... That the Keysborough shelter take some dogs from other pounds that were at the end of their time. Some of these dogs need extra training and rehab in very experienced homes and are not suited to homes with kids or novice owners.I'm sure the rescue ppl can correct me if that's wrong,
  13. Sadly,i too had the same experience with the Keysborough shelter on two occasions.I can also highly recommend ,,, Blue cross .. in Wonga park.Very nice ppl there. My friend got her dogs from them.Animal aid in Coldstream are good too.Look on Pet Rescue,or ask the rescue groups on here to help you.
  14. It makes me happy and amazed when i see really well trained dogs.Once had to meet a lady outside her shop. She parked beside a busy road and opened the back door.Out jumped a white shepherd;he stood still by the car while she went to the boot, then when she got on the footpath he came up beside her and walked along side her into the back of the shop where he went and sat on his bed. All without a word from her. I wonder how long it would take to train a dog to that level?
  15. My dog was always vaccinated with the puff in the nose one,for 9 of her 10 years .Then a vet talked me out of it saying she did'nt need it.even though i told him we lived next door to dog breeders. The following year she got kennel cough and died.
  16. With a tight budget your best bet would be to hunt around for second hand materials to make a dog run.Does your council have recycle centre at the tip. Also some furniture factories throw out wood offcuts.Ebay or trading post are good for wire and tin.Try asking around, friends, neighbours, DOL'ers for unwanted items. And ask for help with building it if your not a handyman.Make sure the run is dig out proof as well.
  17. Have always liked the name Jessie for a dog;Has the ie sound like Krustie.
  18. Yes,I agree with what you are saying,My main point was that pet stores shift all the blame onto Mr average, like it's only his fault that they have so many pups in the store instead of being honest about where the majority of the pups come from,Mr Average is part of the problem . The pet stores can plead innocent and say their pups are not from farms, and so many ppl believe them.I feel Mr average is getting better informed these days and more are getting pets desexed yet these same people will go to a pet store to buy their next dog,and believe all the rubbish the staff tell them.
  19. I think the pet shops are telling people that their pups come from'' family breeders''because it sounds better than puppy farm, and gives ppl the impression that they were raised in a nice private home so as not to cop abuse from some of their customers. No store would say to you ,oh yes all our pups are mass produced on the farm.Mr and mrs Average who's one dog had pups that were raised in a family home and even well loved and cared for, thanks to the pet stores ,are now lumped in with the Farmers and the BYB for profit. Not saying it's right for ppl to breed their one dog .But their is a difference. You only need to look at the classifieds to see the adverts for pet shop puppies far out weigh the number of Mr average adverts by miles.Of coarse all these people are adding to the numbers of dogs that end up in the pound.I wonder if the message is getting through to the Mr averages ;but while they may be getting their dogs fixed more these days the farmers have filled the gaps and more. That is how i'm percieving the situation.
  20. We got our last dog when she was 10 months old, from the pound. As she was a stray she had no name.We named her Pippa and she responded within a couple of days to her new name. She also responded when my hubby called her dog,or my youngest called her woofy..Dogs are smart,he/she will catch on to a new name very fast.No need to worry.Enjoy your new dog.
  21. Isn't it against the law to sell pups under 8 weeks old?Or is it one of those laws that nobody ever enforces,I would like to see these ppl fined,Never heard of it ever happening though. One of our local pet stores started out with the odd litter from locals who's dog had pups. Now they too have a constant supply of designer breeds.Someone is breeding a lot of dogs to keep these pet shops supplied all year round. The puppy farmers of coarse.I have also noticed an increase of these designer dogs turning up at the pounds now,
  22. Two tiny dogs outside on a bleak winter night. And you wonder why he was crying at the window.I am amazed they are still alive. And you think throwing water over a freezing dog will help.I read your last thread where you seemed so concerned about wanting to care for your dog and not have it go to your Aunt . ;Now i read that you wanted to re home your dog.If you cared at all about your dogs you would take proper care of them.It seems to me that your only concern is your volatile relationship with your Aunt;and this is not the place to seek advise about that.I suggest you go to a family councilor and sort yourself out.
  23. Gosh;makes me tear up when i hear about animals treated like this.I keep telling myself for every evil person in the world there are a hundred good people,That keeps me going.
  24. No one here has dismissed any breed of dog.I would help any breed or mixed breed if i could .If you could trace the "breeders''of cross breeds i would email them about their dogs too.Every animal on the planet is "special'' and Precious.
  25. Yes ,There are thousands of dogs and dog owners that need help everyday. You can not help them all.But isn't it nice when you can help some of them rather than turn a blind eye and just whinge about them.
