  1. What do you guys do when pups want to play keep away? Zora is going through a bit of a stage of it, so I have only been doing retrieves in the hall where she can't escape, but she does it with things she picks up around the house.
  2. I know she was likely the exception rather then the rule but my old girl Lilly used to kill blue tounges however when she saw a snake she would stand rock steady and alert bark until we noticed, then recall back inside. My current two saw a blue tongue yesterday and proud to report they both seemed a bit frightened of it.
  3. I did suspect that might be the case ;) Glad it is, but a bit disappointed we won't have Rally in January in WA.
  4. Sinjin (how St John can be said, a city (maybe the capital?) in Labrador-Newfoundland province and he breed they came from).
  5. Having owned a Chesapeake and having to return him to the breeder because I was not prepared for their temperament I would say they have 'edge' but did not want to harp on. They are really closer to an ACD in temprament then any other breed, only instead of herding they retrieve (although in the US a few people use them for cattle herding). There are several titled to the higher levels of Sch. Definately not the right dog for someone expecting a gundog temp. ;)
  6. Fair enough The situation sucks A large male ACD may suit (trying to be helpful now ;) )
  7. A gundog. I wonder what it is you don't like about gundogs Cosmolo? Not all gundogs are 'typically gundog'. Weimeraners were bred to be blood trackers and bring down game and the gundog duties came later. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are much more aloof then most gundogs and very solid. These two breeds are not so 'gundoggy'.
  8. Ness your girl Kenzie is an awesome success story too! :D Even from when I met her to the videos of her now there is such a massive change. (Hmm CCD has changing goal posts, at the start of the year I told Ptolomy maybe October... now thats getting close and looking doubtful.... maybe next October )
  9. Yes if you go back there are quite a few posts from me about Toby's bike phobia, general anxiety ect. ;) You will get there Brennan's mum! Toby is coming ahead so much! He still has off nights and will never be a 'normal' dog but on Thursday I felt like we were getting pretty close to being CCD ready He heeled so well (by my standards ) and did all three paces, just need a bit more work on stands.
  10. I saw the first bobtail os the season today! Zora found it (and recalled off it ) then Toby found it (and also recalled off it :D ), it was very sluggish just walking along the dirt track. I think they are starting to come out of hibernation, we are done with walks in the bush now (with the dogs offleash anyway!).
  11. As the regions of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada are from the same province maybe a city/landmark ect from there, here is a website about the region: http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/
  12. I know it's a gundog but the temperament is not very gun-doggy - Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
  13. I heard it's now July 2012 from some people at training
  14. Cheers Will wait a bit until I have a few things.. ;)
  15. Toby will be doing CCD first, as I won't be moving past novice with him and if I went straight to Novice and he got 3 passes from 3 trials (Not likely! ) Thats our whole obedience career done, at least doing CCD drags it out a little longer.
  16. We need to get you (and the dogs maybe) out here for a walk in the bush soon then! It's not long until it's snake season And hopefully we will see some roos this time ;)
  17. Just saw this. Bedazzled would you suggest seeing her now or a bit later when I am ready to start to teach it?
  18. Yes in the list of breeds you named there is only one I would actually own. Everybody has different tastes.
  19. Yes I am pretty nervous to venture to show classes I know absolutly nothing so I am going to feel pretty stupid as is!! :D Zora and ST's JT and Lulu sometimes go to Wolfproud classes on Thursdays. The lady there is really understanding with newbies and if you let me know when you are planning to go and I am not rostered on I will come too.
  20. Welcome Jerry! Thanks for the kind words Oso, I spent Zora's first week and a half second guessing everything but then I let go. We had a lovely outing today where we saw many dogs and there was no reactivity (of course her and Lulu went on leash when we saw dogs coming). She also would follow strangers and start heeling next to them hoping for a treat. I must say Zora and Lulu absolutely love each other, it really is so adorable to see them play together.
  21. Thanks for offering to help : ) I've come to the conclusion that I'm not one of those people who subscribe (abscribe? What's the word?) to the theory behind a raw food diet, or believe that my dog SHOULD and MUST be fed raw...and I'm finding it quite freeing, actually! (I'm not at all implying that you're one of them) Some raw food supporters are so preachy and fanatical. They're like reformed ex-smokers or Born Again Christians. It's a real turn-off. I know just the kind you mean I was recently using a small quantity of cheese as a treat and someone told me (in a disgusted/shocked voice) 'You can't use cheese... a dog wouldn't find cheese in the forest' ... Luckily the person is a friend and I understand they are deeply committed to RAW or else I would have told them where to go! I am of the mentality unless I ask someone for advice or someone asks me for advice I keep my opinions to myself
  22. Sorry to hear things are a bit rough for a few DOLers On another note I have to say Zora is such a nice puppy to raise, she is dog friendly, people friendly, already housebroken, a quick learner and seems to have some natural retrieving ability. I am really liking Brittany's and I am not sure I would have another breed now. I never knew owning a dog could be this stress free.
  23. Eagle Pack Holistic gave my dogs the runs For the whole two massive bags I went through. My old girl who lived to 14 spent the majority of her life eating supermarket kibble. My current allergy boy throws up after eating bones and gets a funny gut on high protein kibble. Different types of kibble suits different dogs. Different people choose differently, I am currently feeding Royal Canin because I needed to buy kibble in a hurry as mine suddenly ran out and isn't available at retail (I still never know how that happens!) and Royal Canin has a Brittany on the front.
  24. Happy Brithday Em!!!! Also it wasn't a bumper, it was a dove dokken My dad says he will get it out though and if that fails my brothers friend is a tree doctor...
