  1. I'm going to throw a totally new breed into the discussion. You want a small, intelligent, active, outgoing companion dog that can do obedience and agility successfully - go for a Yorkshire Terrier !! Because there aren't many around, you don't see them in the obedience/agility arenas very often. However, they do extremely well in USA and in our breeding lines there was a dog that attained its UD title in NSW. In SA I have a friend who has trained three of hers and only because of work commitments and doggie maternal duties has stopped for now, but they did exceptionally well. As for grooming - you just trim the coat and keep it that way. No shedding either. If I was physically capable of doing obedience, I would be out there with my little yorkies ....
  2. Controls for BREEDERS of these dogs would be more appropriate - those breeders who allow their pedigree AmStaffs or Staffies or whatever to be sold without desexing are not acting in a responsible manner. "Registered" Breeders of pedigree dogs should be more circumspect as to where their puppies go. If people who have these Bull breeds are so concerned about the bad name their breed might be receiving, then they should work together to make sure no-one outside their breeds receives an entire male or female. I do have to mention that I am totally blown away by the number of AmStaff X puppies that are advertised for sale in the Adelaide Advertiser Pets - Dogs for sale column each Saturday. I think that shows there are too many undesexed pups being sold.
  3. My Goldens have had giardia (possibly via bird and possum droppings) and Metrogyl (flagyl) was prescribed by the vet, which cleared up the problem very quickly. Furkidsforever
  4. HEY!!! Just get a stick of cabana and cut a piece and push the pill into that !! No fuss, no stress, and my kids just love cabana !!!
  5. Could be a tracea problem. There is a medication called Torbugesic (liquid) that could possibly relieve the coughing/choking. Maybe ask your vet about it and if you have it on hand you could give it to your dog when he is having a problem.
  6. From my experience I think you should be aware that coughing after drinking water can mean a tracea problem. Whilst it is not necessarily serious at the moment, you should know that this could be something that may get worse one day. If you think it is upsetting your dog you might like to have it checked out by your vet. And I am making this comment from experience with a couple of my yorkies over the years.
  7. In SA the breeder arranges the transfer of papers into the new owner's name. The new owner doesn't have to be a DogsSA member.
  8. Is there anyone in your household who is able to make something to jam between your half closed door and the doorframe? We have a piece of wallboard for the width we require, with a hole cut in the bottom and our Golden Retrievers manage this with no problems. Only thing is we don't have a flap but find this isn't necessary anyway. I have tried to insert a picture. Cost is minimal.
  9. My 3 goldens were continually suffering from diarrohea which the vet was unable to discover the reason for. I was using VIP dog rolls and had noticed some changes in the smell and texture of the rolls, so, under advice from my vet, I have used Tucker Time for the past 12 months and no more diarrohea. The kids love it. They have only Tucker Time (chicken and garlic rolls) and senior Pedigree dry food. They certainly aren't fading away. I often give it to the yorkies as well, and they love it. Some vets sell it, PetStock sells it and my local One Stop Pet Shop. It isn't available in supermarkets. I purchase it from my local One Stop Pet Shop and the owners are dog show people. They have assured me the product is free of undesirable additives, and, in fact, have stopped selling any other type of dog food because of the additives.
