Which Breed Is Right For The First Time Dog Owner?
Simply Grand replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think the issue with them is a lot of dodgy back yard breeding and people who want a cute toy not a dog getting hold of them and not treating them like dogs KC. Bred and treated correctly they are not nasty or snappy and are easier to manage and less likely to push limits than many other breeds. -

Off the top of my head, as reasonably "bomb proof" breeds: Whippet Cavalier Maltese Mini Poodle I'm trying to thinking of really inexperienced people I've had in training classes and which breeds have been more and less manageable for them. -
OT but wow, how good is SBS on demand. I didn't know that was a thing! I'll watch Bombon soon, thanks Noishe :)

Try wall to wall Vizslas Colour collars rock then. hahaha I imagine if collars somehow came off everyone would be getting a new identity. -
LAT is not an avoidance exercise, it's a conditioning exercise. You are conditioning both a new association with the stimulus and an alternate behavioural response. It's the same principle as a dog modifying its behaviour because it fears punishment in certain situations, it just uses positive consequences rather than negative. Also, LAT is only the beginning of a process. The idea is to use LAT to create a calm mindset in the dog and show it that it has some control of the situation. You can then increase exposure to whatever it is the dog reacts to and show them that there is no benefit to them in reacting and continue to build a positive association rather than a negative one. You could achieve the same using punishment if the punishment genuinely puts the dog into a calmer state of mind but you have a high risk of creating other negative associations.

Hahaha, I'm not surprised! I've only dealt with mixed breed shelter litters so there's usually enough difference in markings to tell them apart within the first few days but we did have a litter with 4 black and tans (presumed to be Rotti mixes) and we had to pick them up to see if boy or girl and inspect closely to determine who was who for most of the time they were with us  -

Can you tell them apart without their collars Allerzeit? I can see subtle differences looking it the pics but their markings all look so similar! -

Do You Love One Breed But Not Love A Similar Breed?
Simply Grand replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
I wish people who don't understand the value of well bred purebreed dogs could read and appreciate this thread. Unfortunately I don't think many would understand that all the reasons we quote and the fact that we all love and want to live with different breeds are the reasons why pure breed dogs are valuable. Sigh. -

Do You Love One Breed But Not Love A Similar Breed?

Totally agree that Kelpies are the most similar to BCs, particularly working line. And yep, both are different to Aussies in temp. It was funny at the shelter I worked at for the last year, my colleague/friend loves the high energy, high drive working dogs, she owns two BCs and her fav shelter dog was a full on, smart as a whip Kelpie. I like the lazier, lower drive but cuddlier dogs and my fav was a big sooky Rotti. -

This was one of the 'similar' pairs I was thinking of. Also SBT and Amstaff or Pit Bull. It's funny when you actually get to know the breeds in question how you realise what the differences are. -

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Isn't it funny, the small differences can make such a big difference! -
I have an Australian Shepherd. Today at the park someone was talking on the phone and referred to her as a Border Collie. I didn't correct her because it doesn't matter and it would have been strange by the time she got off the phone but I found myself feeling weird that she thought I had a Border Collie Aussie Shepherd was the first breed I really fell in love with when I started learning about dog breeds and I wanted one for a few years before I actually got one, and I couldn't be happier. However I don't think I'd ever want to own a Border Collie. It's not that I don't like them, they just don't appeal to me as a dog I'd like to own. I find it odd as although there are some physical and temperamental differences they really are pretty similar to Aussie Shepherds. Anyone else have a similar thing about particular breeds? BTW, this is just meant to be a casual, lighthearted chat thread, not about breed bashing so please don't be offensive about other breeds or take offence if someone doesn't like a breed you do like :)
